“Wanna go to Emma’s place for dinner?” I ask Thomas, my Beta
“Sure.” He answered
We got off the couch and left the packhouse, heading toward the only cafe in town. It was a five minute walk from the house to the cafe. We stopped in front of the door, a strange feeling coming over me. I shake it off and open the door, hearing the tinkle of the bell over the door. I spot Emma in the middle of the cafe.
“Our usual please Em.” I call out to her
“Of course, please sit.” she replied
She turns to walk to the kitchen. What the hell? I thought She’s never been that casual with me.
‘Emma, what is going on?’ I ask her through her link
‘I’m sorry Alpha, there is a newcomer in here, she doesn’t smell like a rogue though, so I thought it best to keep our cover by not addressing you properly.’ She replied back, glancing slightly to her right before casting her gaze down to the floor.
I give a slight nod, dismissing her, and she all but sprints to the kitchen. I turn to the right to go sit down when I see her, the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Porcelain skin that has been freckled, deep red curly hair which I notice there was leaves in. And the most interesting color of eyes I have ever seen, their color was an ever changing stormy gray. She had curves in all the right places, though lean like she was a runner. I caught her staring at me, and my wolf started going crazy in my head.
‘MATE’ Alex said in my head
‘How can she be our mate?’ I ask him. I’m so confused about who she was. Where she came from. And how she stumbled onto our pack territory.
“Dude, you’re staring like you’re going to eat her.” Thomas whispers
Blinking, I take my eyes off her, I walk past her toward our regular table and her scent hit me like a train. Strawberry and vanilla, it’s a mouthwatering combination.
Thomas and I sat down and we waited for our food, I watch her eat her food quickly and take some pills before she paid and bolted from the cafe.
“Who is she?” I ask Emma when she brings our plates to us
“I don’t know Alpha, I never got her name, she only ordered something to eat and ask where the inn was.” she answered.
Well, at least I knew where she was, for the night anyway. Thomas and I finish our meal and I send him on his way.
“You sure you don’t want to come?” He asks
“Nah, I’m going to go out for a walk.” I said
“Okay, suit yourself.” He smirks and walks off toward the packhouse
I start off just walking around the town, going nowhere in particular, just trying to clear my head. I look up and found myself outside of the inn. I take a deep shaky breath and I go to pull open the door.
“Alpha, what a pleasant surprise.” Corey looks up from the counter
Corey is an older wolf, has always run the inn for as long as I can remember. He has salt and pepper hair, more salt now though, green eyes, and still lithe, though age has set in now.
“Hello Corey, there was a girl that checked in here right?” I ask
“Yes, she is my only guest tonight, she’s not from here, she doesn’t smell rogue though.” he replied
“Emma said the same thing at the cafe.” I say “What room is she in?”
“She is in room 4, but I can’t let you in there.” he tells me
I let a low growl escape my mouth and he pales.
“I’m sorry Alpha.” he whispers
I shake my head “No, I get it, you’re concerned for the safety of your customers.”
He lets out a breath and hands me a key. “The safety of the pack is more important.”
I take the key from him and head up the stairs, quietly because I’m sure she is asleep. I open the door carefully to make sure the hinges don’t squeak and I enter the room. Her scent permeates the air, washing over me. I inhale deeply, her scent calming me. I listen to the silence, hearing only her even breathing and soft snores, indicating that she was asleep. I step closer to the bed to get a better look at my mate. Alex whines in my head, he loves being close to our mate, but there is something different about her, she is not wolf, that much I could tell, but she wasn’t human either.
I wish I knew what her name was, I think. Suddenly, her phone buzzes with a text message. I step back into the shadows in case she wakes up, but she doesn’t. She doesn’t even stir. I walked to the bedside table and looked at the phone screen.
Abbi: Serine, is everything okay? I haven’t heard from you in hours.
So our mate’s name is Serine? That’s a very lovely name, I muse.
‘She is so beautiful’ Alex said
‘I agree, but who is she? Where did she come from? How did she get here?’ I ask, awed at her, but also anxious. We know nothing about her, she could have been sent by one of our enemies. Alex shakes his head, disagreeing. That it didn’t matter where she came from, all that matters is that she is here and meant for us.
I watch her sleep for a few more hours before I start to drift off. I decide then to leave and go home, I wouldn’t want her to wake up and freak out at a strange man sleeping in her room.
“Let me know when she wakes.” I tell Corey
“Yes Alpha.” He replies
I run back to the packhouse and up to my room, where I fall asleep dreaming about my mate.
