Michael stared at the bank notification on his phone, his mind frozen as the reality of the numbers sank in. $150,000,000. He blinked, hard, as if the screen would clear and reveal a glitch or a joke, but the numbers stayed.
A second notification buzzed. This time, it was a message from his grandfather.
“BELIEVE IT NOW, MICHAEL?”
Michael let the phone slip from his hand onto the bed, his heart hammering in his chest. Just last night, he had dismissed his grandfather’s cryptic conversation as drunken rambling, a fantastical tale exaggerated by beer and nostalgia. Yet here it was—irrefutable proof that every word had been true. He had gone to sleep doubting the world, and now he was waking up a millionaire.
For a moment, the sheer magnitude of the money swept over him like a wave. But as quickly as the initial shock had come, it receded, leaving him face-to-face with the mess of emotions he hadn’t had time to sort through. His family’s money problems, his constant struggle to prove himself, and the events of yesterday—all of it weighed on him like a stone.
Michael sat on the edge of his bed, his thoughts pulling him back to the nightmare of the previous day.
Michael Brillantes moved slowly through the crowded hallways of Santa Fe City High, his old backpack hanging from one shoulder. The weight of his family's money problems felt heavy on him, but he kept going as the only scholar among many rich classmates. To help his family, Michael worked part-time in the school cafeteria, serving food to students who lived very different lives from his own.
One day, while handling the busy lunchtime crowd, Michael came face-to-face with Arwin, the star basketball player and a symbol of wealth at Santa Fe City. Arwin, known for being arrogant and loud, saw this as a chance to make fun of Michael in front of his friends.
In a loud voice, Arwin shouted.
"LOOK at Brillantes, EVERYONE!!!"
"The scholarship kid, working as a simple cafeteria worker."
"IS THIS your idea of a bright FUTURE?" Arwin' words were full of disdain, his sneer making them even crueler. Laughter broke out like a harsh chorus, echoing around them and adding to the emotional weight of the mocking taunts.
Michael, with a determined but quiet demeanor, kept his focus on his duties, ignoring the taunts. The cafeteria was filled with whispers and judgment, but Michael continued to serve, his resilience shining through the dark cloud of mockery.
As Arwin, surrounded by his friends, pointed at Michael and told him to serve their table, a mix of humiliation and frustration rose within him. The cafeteria buzzed with anticipation as Michael reluctantly approached their table, determined to stay calm.
Arwin, with a condescending grin, ordered Michael to get a juice from the vending machine, waving 50 bucks in front of him. The onlookers eagerly waited for Michael's response, expecting him to follow the unspoken rules of their social hierarchy.
However, Michael, fueled by quiet strength, resisted the urge to bow to Arwin' demands. With a firm voice, he replied,
"I may work here, but I won't let you belittle me!!!"
"I'm not here to be your servant!!!"
Arwin, amused by Michael's unexpected resistance, decided to make things worse. With a malicious smirk, he mockingly suggested,
"Since you're feeling so high and MIGHTY, how about you GRAB A MOP and clean up this MESS you're about to MAKE?!!!"
The cafeteria fell silent as Arwin purposefully tipped over a tray, spilling drinks onto the floor. Michael's jaw clenched, but he refused to give in to the provocation. Determined to rise above the degradation, he replied firmly.
"I won't stoop to that level, Arwin. I'm here to work, not to be your target."
"I won't lower myself to that, Arwin. I'm here to work, not to be your victim."
The cafeteria went quiet for a moment after Michael spoke. Arwin was surprised by Michael's boldness and frowned, but Michael kept working, not letting the teasing get to him. The people watching started to whisper, noticing a change in how the scholarship student and the rich basketball player interacted.
Arwin' classmates looked at each other, feeling a bit uneasy. Michael kept serving other students, ignoring the scene Arwin was making.
The tension in the cafeteria was thick until the manager's voice broke through like a sudden breeze.
"HOLD ON!!!" he shouted.
"Brillantes is here to serve food, not to mop floors. We have a cleaning staff for that!"
The manager's words were firm, stopping the mean tasks given to Michael and giving him a break from the bullying.
Arwin was surprised by the manager stepping in and frowned but didn't push any further. The manager's strong words saved Michael from more embarrassment and set a clear rule against the unfair demands. The cafeteria filled with a mix of relief and curiosity as Michael went back to serving food, not letting Arwin' mean task get to him.
Even though the manager told Arwin that Michael wasn't there to clean, some people still laughed at Michael. They didn't want to make Arwin mad. It was awkward, but Michael kept working, not letting the laughter bother him too much.
In response to the situation, Arwin replied with a threatening tone, mocking Michael.
"You know!!!"
"I can make your manager LOSE HIS JOB if I want to!!!"
His words were sharp and mean, showing he had power and trying to scare Michael.
Even though Arwin tried to show he was in charge, Michael stood firm. The cafeteria manager, though looking worried, kept supporting Michael, knowing the situation wasn't fair.
Watching from a distance, Maya, the president of the Student Council, overheard what was happening. Seeing how unfairly Michael was being treated, she stepped forward to stop it. With authority, she confronted Arwin with a stern voice, shouting at him.
"ENOUGH, Arwin!!!"
"We don't allow bullying HERE!!!"
"TREAT EVERYONE WITH RESPECT!!!"
Her words were strong and clear, reminding everyone that respect was important in this place.
Arwin, now facing disapproval not just from the cafeteria manager but also from the Student Council president, reluctantly backed down. The atmosphere in the cafeteria changed again as Maya's actions stopped the unfair treatment Michael had been going through.
Trying to defend himself, Arwin responded casually after Maya's reprimand.
"COME ON, Maya, we're just having some FUN to pass the TIME!!!"
"We're waiting for the basketball court to be cleaned, and we have practice soon."
But Maya stayed firm and reminded him.
"Fun should never hurt someone else's DIGNITY!!!"
"Treat your fellow students with respect, no matter what!!!"
The cafeteria became quiet as Maya's serious words sank in. This moment taught not only Arwin but the whole student body about the importance of empathy and fairness in how they treated each other.
In response to Maya's firm stance, Arwin reluctantly gave in. However, he couldn't let go of his pride and threw a mocking look at Michael, muttering.
"YOU'RE LUCKY today, a hero came to your RESCUE!!!"
Michael, unfazed by Arwin' words, kept focusing on his tasks. Maya's intervention not only stopped the bullying but also changed the power balance in the cafeteria.
As Arwin grudgingly backed off, the atmosphere in the cafeteria was a mix of tension and relief. Arwin and his group, with one last disdainful glance, left for the basketball court. The cafeteria slowly returned to normal, but the incident stayed in the minds of those who saw it.
After the commotion settled and Arwin and his group left, Michael walked up to Maya with a grateful smile.
"Thank you, Maya!!!"
"Your help meant a lot!!!" he said sincerely.
Maya gave a reassuring nod and replied,
"No one deserves to be treated that way. We're a school community, and everyone should feel safe and respected. If you ever need help, don't hesitate to reach out."
This marked the start of an unexpected friendship. Little did they know, the bond formed in the cafeteria would grow into a supportive friendship, playing a key role in Michael's journey at Santa Fe City High.
