*His POV*
Jewlo stood looking through the one way that lined the wall of the compartment. The monitors on the far wall of their secret room beeped quietly with the heartbeats of those women being held there. Some of the unknowing females of Earth searched the walls looking for ways to escape, though there would be none. Others sat huddled together talking. Most just slept in the bunks provided for them.
The women had calmed considerably since the first day they had been taken. Jewlo’s eyes scanned the room slowly, studying each female carefully, trying to make the decision that loomed over all of his men.
Noklosa pointed to a small group huddled around the bunks closest to the doors leading to the hallway. “My eyes keep coming back to those three there. I think I like the tall one with the blonde hair most.” Noklosa looked at his older brother and Jewlo gave a small nod, acknowledging he had heard.
Jewlo’s eyes traveled over the group his younger brother had pointed out. The earthlings in question had caught Jewlo’s eyes a few times previously as well, though he had more of a taste for the shortest of the bunch. A small chestnut brunette with intelligent eyes that seemed to take in the scene in an instant.
During the abduction, a few days previous, Jewlo had watched the proceedings on the security monitors in his chambers to assure that no harm had come to the humans. The short brunette had caught his attention then as well. She had not cried, screamed, nor fought, only whimpered slightly when faced with the vaccination that would prolong her life and keep her safe from illness and allergens. She had been uncommonly brave.
Jewlo had been very impressed with her then. He had watched her curiously as she had taken in what was going on around her carefully, taken in the rooms she had passed through until once more uniting with her friends.
He had felt she was a natural leader and that feeling was heightened when the friends in question had fallen to sleep. Instead of sleeping as well, she had gone from group to group talking to the others. She asked questions and listened intently. She had even been one of the handful that had actually eaten and enjoyed the food provided for them over the last few days, encouraging others to eat and keep up their strength as well. Though her eyes were tired from lack of sleep, she stayed awake and spoke with her friends, the other women traveling around, and watched the escape plans fail while comforting the darker-haired female of the group along with the blonde that Noklosa was fond of.
Jewlo found himself to be very drawn to her, but would she be the right one? He sighed in frustration, scanning the others. He needed a strong woman. A leader. He needed someone to help him bridge the gap between his people and humans.
“The one with the unnatural red hair over at the table seems like she would be a handful.” Kanoch stood behind Jewlo, slightly off to the right. The presence of his guard made Jewlo squirm. How could he make this impossible choice with Kanoch standing near? Jewlo pushed the man from his mind. He had to make the decision now. There was no more time.
Scanning the room one last time, Jewlo nodded to himself, finally having made up his mind. “I have decided. 21401. That is who I am taking.”
Noklosa nodded his agreement and Kanoch grunted his acknowledgment. Jewlo looked over his shoulder to his guard. Jealousy was obvious in his face, but Jewlo did not have time to comfort the man’s feelings at that moment. Leaving his brother to watch the women for a bit longer, Jewlo walked down the dimly lit corridor towards the control room.
“Are you sure about this sire?” Kanoch’s deep voice was barely audible though the hall was quiet.
“Sure about what exactly?” Jewlo stopped to face Kanoch. The imposing man’s face was etched with concern. In the dim light, the silver that spread over his pitch-black skin shone like stars in the night sky of their planet. His deep midnight blue eyes were focused on Jewlo’s face as he sucked in a breath preparing to speak his mind.
“Your father forbade you to take a mate before we left. He wanted you and your brother to wait until your return to the planet at least. And, I can’t say I blame him. There are those even here on this ship that would not wish to see a union between us and humans succeed. And a successful union between the prince and the next in line to the throne is asking for trouble. Though we have brought trusted guards with us, I don’t know that it would be enough to protect you out here.” Kanoch clenched his jaw, causing the muscles to spasm under his skin.
“You are right, Kanoch. It would be asking for trouble and my father did forbid it. But my father isn’t here. I and my brothers, as the royal family, expect these men to act in a certain way towards these humans. We don’t want them taking what they want from the females as they did back on the planet. My brothers and I need to provide an example, so that when our orders are disobeyed, we have our own actions to stand on. So yes, Kanoch, I am sure. Bring on the trouble because this is the only way.” Jewlo met Kanoch’s eyes with what he hoped would be certainty and Kanoch nodded towards him.
“Then I will stand with you, sire. As your guard, I will stand with you.”
“I hope you'll stand with me as more than just my guard.”
“You know I will, though since you are bringing that up, I cannot believe you are making me do this.” Kanoch’s nostrils flared as he huffed out his breath in anger. “I do not see how I am ever going to be able to love another.”
“You loved Miealan, didn’t you?”
“That was different.” Distant pain crossed Kanochs face and Jewlo instantly regretted mentioning her name.
“I know Kanoch. I am sorry.” Jewlo reached for Kanoch, who relaxed under the prince’s touch.
“I don’t like this Jewlo. Not one bit, but I will follow you to my grave as your guard and as your lover. I will always follow you.” Jewlo smiled and leaned in for a chaste kiss.
