CHAPTER 5: RISING TENSION

The first time Lena saw his inner circle, she understood something immediately. Power had layers. And she was standing too close to the center of it. It started in the afternoon. She was walking past the lower hall when voices reached her. Low and definitely male voices. It didn’t sound like it was servants or guards talking, it was giving men with power are speaking. She slowed down when getting close to the door. The meeting room door was slightly open. She should have walked away but she didn’t. Inside, five men sat around the long table. Nikolai stood at the head. Calm. Still. Listening more than speaking. The air inside the room felt heavier than usual. Not loud. Not chaotic, just like danger lived there. Lena stayed by the door, unseen. One of the men spoke. Talk in dark suit. Scar along his jaw. “They are moving closer to the port.” Another voice. Rough. “We warned them.” “They don’t care about warnings anymore.” Silence. Then Nikolai finally spoke. “Then we stop warning.” Simple, cold and final. No shouting. No anger. Just decision. The whole vibe of the room shifted. But Lena’s eyes were not on him anymore. They were on the man sitting to his right. He had not spoken once. But he was watching her, not Nikolai. Their eyes met, immediately she shifted her gaze. He did not look away. Lena’s chest tightened slightly, not because of fear but her instinct. It was like Nikolai noticed. He moved slightly, blocking that line of sight without looking back. The meeting continued. “Volkov’s men were seen near the east district,” someone said. At that name, the energy of the room hardened. Volkov. Rival. Enemy. Danger. “They won’t touch what is mine,” Nikolai said quietly. Not loud. Not dramatic. But nobody questioned it. Then a sentence slipped that froze Lena where she stood. “We heard they are asking about the girl.” Silence.Cold. Sharp. Lena’s heartbeat slowed… then hit hard once. “The girl” “Her” She leaned slightly closer to hear. The chair moved. Nikolai turned. His eyes landed directly on her. Caught. The room went still. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. Then he said calmly, “Leave.” Not to her but to them. The men stood up immediately. No hesitation. No argument. Chairs scraped softly. Footsteps. Silence throughout the room. Only one man remained behind longer than the rest. The one who had been watching her. Lena entered the room. He stood slowly, eyes still on Lena. Measuring and Calculating. Something unreadable between them. Then he left. The door closed. Now it was just her and Nikolai. “You should not listen to conversations not meant for you.” His voice was calm. But his eyes were sharp now. “They were talking about me.” “Yes.” “Why?” Silence. He walked toward her slowly. Not threatening. Not gentle. Just steady. “Because being near me makes you visible.” “I did not choose that.” “No,” he agreed quietly. “You did not.” A pause. “Who is Volkov?” she asked. His gaze changed slightly. Not softer. Not harder, he just looked tougher. “A man who wants what is not his.” “And that includes me?” Silence again. Then, “Perhaps.” Her fingers curled slightly. “So I am danger now.” “You always were.” That confused her. But he did not explain. He never explained more than necessary. Days passed. But something had changed. Lena began noticing things she did not before. Contradictions. Outside the mansion, his name carried fear. Blood. Ruthlessness. Death. Inside… he was controlled. Quiet. Watching. He never forced her. Never shouted. Never crossed the line she feared he would. Yet the same hands that stayed calm near her… ruled violence outside. She saw the duality now. And she could not understand it. One evening, she saw him return later than usual. His steps slower. Not weak. Just heavy. He did not notice her at first. She was standing at the corridor turn.Waiting and watching. Something pulled her there without reason. He stopped when he saw her. For a second, neither spoke. “You should sleep,” he said quietly. “You came back late.” “Yes.” “From Volkov?” Silence. “Go to bed, Malenkaya.” He dismissed her. But not cold. She did not move. “Why are they asking about me?” she asked again. His jaw tightened slightly. “The world I live in uses people as pressure points.” “And I am yours.”she said A pause. “Yes.” Truth again. Simple. Unhidden. That should have frightened her. Maybe it did. But something else mixed with it now. Something warmer. More dangerous. She did not like it. Later that night, she found it hard to sleep. The mansion was quiet. Too quiet. Lena stepped out of her room. Barefoot. Silent. She did not know why she was walking. But something felt… wrong. Then she saw him. At the end of the dim corridor. Standing alone. Still. His back to her. His right hand resting on the sink in the small washroom near the hall. Water running. Red spreading, it was blood. She froze. For the first time since she entered his world… She saw it. Not rumors. Not whispers. Not stories. Reality. Blood on his hands. He noticed her reflection in the mirror. Their eyes met through glass. Neither moved. The water kept running. Red fading slowly into clear. “You should not see this,” he said quietly. But he did not hide his hands. Did not turn away. Did not lie. Lena stepped closer. Slow. Careful. Her heart was beating, but her face stayed calm. “Did you kill someone?” she asked. Silence. Then, “Yes.” No hesitation. No excuse. Just truth and no remorse. Her breath caught softly. Not fear. Not shock. Something deeper. Realization. This man… was exactly what the world said. He was dangerous and ruthless. Capable of death without hesitation. And yet… He never hurt her. Never forced her. Never broke her. The contradiction pulled tighter inside her chest. He watched her closely now. Waiting for fear. For rejection. For distance but it did not come. Instead, she asked quietly, “Does it bother you?” A strange question. Even he seemed surprised. “No.” Another pause. Then he turned fully toward her. Blood still faint on his skin. Eyes darker now. “But it should bother you.” Silence filled the space between them. Heavy and Unspoken. Real. Lena looked at his hands once more. Then back at his eyes. And for the first time… She did not see a monster. She saw a man standing alone in a world built on violence. And somehow… She had stepped into it. He turned off the water. Walked past her. Stopped. Close enough for her to feel the heat of his presence. “Somethings are best not known, you’re too close to danger,” he said quietly. Her voice came softer now. “I think danger already found me.” A pause. Long. Heavy. Then he walked away. But something had changed again. Not outside. Inside. That night, Lena could not sleep. Because now… She had seen the blood. And it did not push her away. It pulled her deeper in. She wanted to see beyoung the veil he put up.
