Chapter 23

"Dad, what's going on?" Emily asked anxiously, looking at her father. "Emily, your grandmother just called and said she wants to take back Joyland Realty," Frank said, his voice trembling. "What did you say?" Nancy shot up, glaring at her husband. "Why is she taking back Joyland Realty? Emily just secured a project with Destroy Steele Enterprises, and now she's taking back the company. Is she using us and then throwing us away? Didn't you ask her why?" "I... I didn't have time to ask before she hung up," Frank stammered. "Damn it! How could you be so useless? Marrying you is the biggest mistake of my life!" Nancy screamed, yanking Frank's collar. Emily sat pale-faced, then abruptly stood up and rushed out. She needed to confront her grandmother and find out why Joyland Realty was suddenly taken away. It was the company she was determined to build her career on, and she had just secured a major project. If it was taken away, what would happen to her project and all her hard work? But when she arrived at the Foster family's old mansion, the butler informed her that Ladyship Foster didn't want to see her. "Miss Emily, please go back. Ladyship Foster is resting," the butler said with a smile. "Butler, I must see Grandma. Please, I beg you to tell her," Emily pleaded, her eyes resolute. "I won't leave until I see her!" "Miss Emily Foster, you know this won't help," the butler said with a helpless smile before turning away. Inside the mansion, Ladyship Foster lay comfortably in a rocking chair, enjoying some fruit. Upon hearing the butler's report, she snorted, "If she wants to wait, let her wait!" The afternoon passed quickly, and Emily was still waiting outside. She didn't want to give up; she needed to understand why the company was taken away. Just then, a mocking voice sounded behind her. "Well, if it isn't my dear Emily. What are you doing here, playing security guard? With your acting skills, you should be in showbiz." "Bob, what are you doing here?" Emily turned around, seeing Bob striding in with a smug expression, holding several documents. "None of your business. Move aside!" Bob suddenly pushed Emily, arrogantly walking past her. "Ah!" Emily couldn't react in time, hitting the ground hard, blood streaming from her head. The butler came out just in time to see this. Bob quickly shouted, "It's not my fault! She did it on purpose to frame me. She's trying to make Grandma pity her. How disgusting!" "Miss Emily Foster, you should go to the hospital. Losing too much blood is dangerous," the butler said coldly. Then, turning to Bob, his tone changed to one of warmth, "Mr. Bob Foster, Ladyship Foster is waiting for you inside." Hearing this, Emily was furious. She was about to question why her grandmother wouldn't see her when she noticed the title on the documents in Bob's hand. She was shocked. "Bob! Why do you have the property certificate for Joyland Realty?" "Isn't it obvious?" Bob sneered, "Grandma took Joyland Realty from you to give it to me. I'll be signing the contract with the Destroy Steele Group tomorrow instead of you." "What did you say?" Emily gasped, grabbing Bob's leg. "I secured that project! Why would you replace me? What did I do wrong?" Bob panicked and kicked her away, shouting, "Are you crazy? After you offended the Destroy Steele Group, I had to work hard to salvage the project. It has nothing to do with you. How dare you take credit for it?" "You…!" Emily had never seen someone so shameless. She fainted, spitting out blood. Just then, Jack arrived at the old mansion. Seeing Emily unconscious, his eyes turned icy! Bob felt a shadow flash before him, and the next moment, he was slammed into the door by a punch. Jack grabbed Bob by the hair, lifted him off the ground, and roared, "How dare you hurt my woman? You're courting death!" Bob, overwhelmed by pain and fear, begged, "Please stop… I'm going to die… She fell on her own…" Emily groaned in pain. "Emily!" Jack dropped Bob and quickly rushed to her, cradling her in his arms. Seeing her head covered in blood broke his heart. As he turned and saw Bob crawling inside, Jack shouted, "Bob! Stop right there!" Bob was about to escape, but Jack's furious roar scared him so much that he fell to the ground with a thud. "What do you want, Steele?" Bob's face was pale, his voice trembling. "Her head injury is her fault. Ask the butler if you don't believe me!" The butler quickly nodded, "Mr. Steele, her injury is indeed accidental. It has nothing to do with Mr. Bob Foster." Jack's eyes were filled with murderous intent as he glared at Bob, but he finally gritted his teeth and decided to take Emily to the hospital first. He would deal with Bob later, but Emily couldn't be left in this state. At the hospital, Emily slowly woke up to find it was already dark. She tried to get up but was gently pressed back by a pair of strong hands. "Don't move. You need to rest," said the familiar voice. Emily's nose twitched, and she began to cry. Jack held her close, comforting her gently. Through her tearful and fragmented account, Jack learned what had happened. "Hmph, Bob sure knows how to twist the truth!" Jack sneered. "And Ladyship Foster, she's either blind to the truth or just blatantly biased." He reassured her, "Don't worry, Emily. Bob won't sign that contract tomorrow." "How could he not?" Emily said bitterly. "Mr. Drake Long isn't my friend. He gave me the memorial park project because of the Foster family's influence. Bob is also part of the Foster family. There's no reason for him to fail." "When I say he won't sign the contract, he won't. Trust me." Jack playfully tweaked her nose, trying to lighten her mood. Just then, Frank and Nancy arrived, having heard about their daughter's hospitalization. As soon as she walked in, Nancy started yelling, "Jack, you worthless fool! You can't even look after Emily! She goes to the old mansion and ends up in the hospital! What use are you?" She pushed Jack aside, glaring at him fiercely. "Mom, don't blame Jack. It's my fault for being careless…" Emily knew Jack had been taking care of her sister at the hospital, so she didn't hold him responsible. Nancy's face twisted in anger. "Defending him won't bring the project back, won't earn back the money! We're losing everything because of you two! I'm so furious!" "Mrs. Foster, don't worry. No one but Emily will sign this project," Jack said with a slight smile. "And whoever took the company from her will return it willingly. I'll handle it and make sure you're all satisfied." "You?" Nancy scoffed. "Do you even know your worth? Handle it? You're more likely to mess things up than fix them! Enough! Emily's fine, so I'm leaving. Seeing you two just makes me angrier!" With that, Nancy grabbed her bag and stormed out, with Frank meekly following behind. *** The next morning, Bob, dressed in his best suit, drove his Mercedes to the Destroy Steele Group. At the entrance, he boasted about his Foster family status, and the new receptionist instantly showered him with attention, her attitude extremely humble. This treatment inflated Bob's ego, making him walk with his head held high as if he owned the place. In the chairman's office, Drake was ready to meet Emily, as Jack had specifically instructed him. He wouldn't dare to disobey Jack's orders. When the office door opened, Bob walked in with a smug look, his face still slightly bruised, and sat down on the couch. "Sir, the esteemed guest from the Foster family has arrived," the secretary said respectfully, surprised by Bob's domineering attitude. Drake's face darkened when he saw that it wasn't Emily who had arrived. Oblivious, Bob waved the secretary away and arrogantly said, "Hey! I've decided on the way here. For this cooperation, the Foster family takes ninety percent of the profits, and the Destroy Steele Group gets ten percent. Got it?" "What did you say?" Drake slowly stood up, walking toward Bob. Thinking Drake hadn't heard him, Bob repeated, "I said, for this cooperation, the Foster family takes…" Smack! Before he could finish, Drake slapped him off the couch.
