Chapter 35

1149 Words
Emily felt herself falling for Jack's powerful declaration. Nancy, on the other hand, was furious and ready to lash out at Jack. However, Park spoke first. "Mr. Steele, your bragging skills are truly impressive, but I wonder, with all you've said, what actual benefits can you bring to Emily's company and this family?" As he spoke, he pulled a contract out of his bag. "This is a project I've recently acquired: the Wyndcrest Riverbank restoration and maintenance. It's not a huge profit, around fifty thousand, but it's very easy and requires little initial investment—perfect for Joyland Realty's current situation." "This is my sincerity and my capital for pursuing Emily. But what about you? Besides your big mouth, what do you have?" Park's eyes were filled with pride as he stared at Jack. Before Jack arrived, Park had learned about him from Nancy. Knowing that Jack was just a braggart without a stable job, he lost any sense of competitiveness. It simply wasn't a challenge. "Exactly. Jack, you've been pestering my daughter to marry you, but when have you ever shown any sincerity? Have you bought her a necklace or even bought a piece of clothing for her father?" Nancy sneered, mercilessly attacking him. "You don't even have a job. How can you compare to Mr. Johnson? He's young and already a CEO of a listed company. You're not even worth his little finger!" "Mom, stop it!" Emily was anxious, holding Jack's hand, ready to leave. Jack, however, stopped her, shaking his head slightly. Then he pulled out a contract from his bag and smiled. "Emily, take a look at this contract." "What's this?" Emily took the contract, and her eyes widened in shock. Her breathing grew rapid as if she couldn't believe what she was seeing. Nancy snatched the contract from Emily's hands, her eyes full of disdain. The next second, her eyes almost popped out. "What... what is this contract? Am I seeing this right?" Frank and Park were curious but didn't make a move. Nancy read aloud in a trembling voice, "Wyndcrest Northern District Slum Redevelopment Project contract?" She glared at Jack. "You jinx, where did you get this? Did you print this yourself to deceive us?" "Mom, the company's seal is on the back. How could it be fake?" Emily explained softly. "Impossible!" Park exclaimed in disbelief. "This project was clearly in the hands of the Shaw family. Who are you that the Shaw family would transfer such a prime project to you?" He laughed coldly and pulled out his phone. "Luckily, I know Mr. Carry Shaw. I'll call him to expose your lies!" "Jack..." Emily held Jack's hand, worried. But Jack gave her a reassuring look, signaling her to stay calm. At that moment, Park's call went through. "Mr. Shaw, it's Park Johnson. We had dinner together before!" To expose Jack's supposed lies, Park put the call on speaker, turning the volume to the maximum. "I know, what is it?" Carry Shaw's voice was low, clearly not in a good mood. Park, oblivious, boasted, "Mr. Shaw, there's a guy named Jack Steele here, claiming the Wyndcrest Slum Redevelopment Project is his. If I didn't know you were in charge, I might have believed him!" "Mr. Shaw, my signal isn't great here. Could you loudly confirm that you're in charge of the slum redevelopment project?" Park gestured for Nancy and Frank to come closer to hear better. Nancy glanced disdainfully at Jack and leaned in. But to everyone's surprise, the other end of the call fell silent. Just as Park was puzzled, Carry's furious voice erupted, "Get lost! Who the hell do you think you are, asking me to report to you? You're not worthy!" With that, Carry hung up. The room was filled with an awkward silence. Nancy and Frank exchanged confused looks. Park's face was a mix of embarrassment and unease, but he forced a smile. "Mr. Shaw must have misunderstood my intentions. I wasn't asking him to report to me." Then, he glared at Jack. "It's all because of you! You need to apologize to Mr. Shaw on my behalf!" "Apologize to Carry?" Jack sneered. "I paid a high price to befriend Mr. Shaw. If it weren't for your fake contract, I wouldn't have had to call him!" Park shouted angrily. "Mr. Park is right. It's all because of you. You're a jinx!" Nancy joined in, glaring at Jack. "Stop arguing. Isn't there a contact number for the transferor on the contract? We can call and ask to confirm," Frank said, examining the contract. "Call now. I want to expose this fraud!" Park said firmly. Soon, the call was connected. The noise from the other end suggested the person was in a lively place, and the manager's tone was impatient when he realized it was a stranger calling. Frank quickly asked, "Could you please confirm if your company has transferred the Wyndcrest Slum Redevelopment Project to someone named Jack Steele?" "Jack Steele? Never heard of him. Now hang up, don't interrupt my drinking!" the manager replied coldly. Hearing this, Nancy and Park were overjoyed. They finally exposed Jack's lie and could see him leave in shame. Emily was disappointed. She didn't expect Jack to achieve great things. She just wanted him by her side, working hard together for a good life. But his constant lies for the sake of pride were deeply disappointing. Just as Nancy was about to mock Jack, he spoke into the phone, "Wait a minute, are you sure you don't know me?" As soon as Jack's voice rang out, the noise on the other end of the line ceased. Frank thought the call had been disconnected but saw it was still active. As everyone wondered, the manager's trembling voice came through, "Oh, it's you, sir. I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was you, Mr. Jack Steele!" The project manager had been at the scene the previous night. He had witnessed how Carry was beaten and forced to sign the project transfer contract. However, due to the shock, he didn't remember Jack's name but couldn't forget his voice, which had haunted his nightmares. Now hearing it again, he was terrified. "As long as you remember me. Now, tell them the truth," Jack said coldly. "Yes, right away!" the manager hurriedly replied. "Our company has indeed transferred the Wyndcrest Slum Redevelopment Project to Mr. Jack Steele. He is now the owner of the project. That's all." He quickly hung up, fearing further trouble from Jack. The Foster family living room was silent. Park's face turned pale as he stared at Jack in fear. He had met the project manager once and knew him to be arrogant and proud, using his position in the Shaw Group to act superior. But he never expected that the proud manager would be so submissive and fearful of Jack. Who exactly was this man?!
