Chapter 48

Gavin felt an unbearable pain shoot through his fingers. He looked at his deformed fingers and screamed in agony, cold sweat pouring from him. "What happened?" Emily Foster asked, bewildered, not understanding what had transpired. Jack remained calm as if nothing had happened. Gavin, shaking with pain and glaring at Jack with venomous eyes, spat out, "Just you wait!" He immediately ran towards the medical office on the construction site. "Jack, you shouldn't have done that!" Emily scolded Jack, though she wasn't clueless and had a good idea of what had happened. "Novin Materials not only provides the necessary materials for this project but also handles negotiations with the residents of the slum, saving me a lot of trouble," Emily explained to Jack while they inspected the construction site. Jack wasn't particularly interested in the details; he was there simply to accompany Emily. Suddenly, a group of well-dressed middle-aged men and women appeared, blocking their way. "Stop right there!" shouted a hefty woman at the front. Jack stepped in front of Emily; his gaze coldly fixed on the group. "Who are you, and what do you want?" "What do we want?" The hefty woman sneered. "We are the residents of this slum. Is this woman the new project manager? We're here to demand money from her. Anyone unrelated should get lost!" "Money?" Emily was confused. "Didn't the Shaw family already pay you the demolition fees? What money are you asking for now?" "Haha, you know that was from the Shaw family. But you're not from the Shaw family. What does their money have to do with you?" The hefty woman, hands on her hips, argued. "We initially agreed to move out because we signed a contract with the Shaw family. Now that the Shaw family has transferred the project to you without our consent, we have the right to demand compensation!" Jack quickly grasped the situation. "I see. You want double compensation?" "Double compensation? What nonsense are you talking about?" The hefty woman rolled her eyes. "That was demolition compensation for our homes. What we're asking for now is emotional compensation! Who gave you the right to transfer the project without our consent?" As the hefty woman finished speaking, the rest of the residents who had come with her began shouting: "Yes, well said!" "Pay up, quickly!" "If you don't give us money, we're not leaving!" Some even unfurled pre-prepared banners, blocking the road. Others ran to the construction site, shouting and preventing workers from continuing their work. They even kicked over materials and shattered glass. Emily was furious at their greed. They had already signed and received their demolition compensation, so they had no further claim here. The project transfer was the Shaw family's business; why should they be compensated again? "Your demands are unreasonable. I won't agree with them. Tell your people to stop, or I will call the police!" Emily sternly warned. No sooner had Emily finished speaking than a coarse voice rang out. "What? I heard someone here wants to call the police?" A large, one-eyed man leading a group of thugs walked over. The group of middle-aged men and women causing trouble immediately brightened up upon seeing the newcomer. "Sir Billy, this woman not only refuses to pay us but also wants to call the police. You should teach her a lesson!" the hefty woman shouted happily, throwing flirtatious glances at the thug leader. Billy stepped up to Emily, looking her over with a leering gaze. "Oh, the new project manager is a pretty little thing. This is going to be fun." "What do you mean by that?" Emily glared at him; her tone displeased. Instead of answering, Billy continued to eye her up and down. "Nice, very nice. That waist, that chest, all just my type. Hahaha!" Emily's face turned red with anger at his lewd remarks. She pulled out her phone to call the police and drive these thugs away. Billy snorted, and one of his lackeys rushed forward to snatch the phone from her. Before he could touch her, he was sent flying by a powerful kick. "Who did that? Show yourself!" Billy demanded, shocked. None of them had seen who struck the blow; they only saw the lackey go flying and start vomiting blood. Of course, it was Jack who acted, but he didn't immediately beat down all the troublemakers. He wanted to find out who had sent them. Just then, Gavin returned, his hand bandaged, clearly just out of the medical office. Seeing Emily surrounded, he rushed over, ready to play the hero. "Jack, what kind of husband are you, unable to protect your wife? You're a useless coward!" Gavin shouted at Jack. Emily frowned, about to defend Jack, but Gavin had already pointed at Billy, arrogantly saying, "You troublemakers, get out of here, or I'll take care of you myself!" Billy and his gang were taken aback and then burst into laughter. "What are you laughing at?" Gavin demanded. "I'm the son of Novin Materials' owner. My father is friends with the gang leader Sir Steve. Do you dare to cause trouble on our construction site? Are you tired of living?!" Gavin boasted, pulling out his phone to call his father, Gavin Sr. "Dad, there are troublemakers at the slum site. Give me Sir Steve's number so I can have him send some people to deal with them," Gavin said casually as if dealing with mere pests. Gavin Sr. didn't think much of it and gave his son Steve's number. "Sir Steve?" Billy laughed even louder. He glanced at one of his lackeys, who immediately took out his phone and stepped aside to make a call. Gavin, feeling uneasy, tried calling Old Six. The call went through but was busy. His anxiety grew, but he still blustered, "You're lucky Sir Steve is on another call. When I get through, he'll be here to wipe you out!" "No need to wait," Billy sneered. "Your Sir Steve is already on his way." "What do you mean?" Gavin was puzzled. The lackey who made the call returned and whispered, "Sir Billy, Steve freaked out when he heard you wanted him. He promised to be here in three minutes or he'd break his leg." Billy nodded and grinned at Gavin. Gavin, feeling a growing sense of unease, tried calling Steve again. This time, before the call connected, a phone rang at the entrance of the site. A man hurried in—it was Steve. Gavin was thrilled, raising his phone and shouting, "Sir Steve, over here! These idiots are causing trouble. Teach them a lesson!" He then looked at Billy with a smug grin, making a throat-slitting gesture. But Steve ignored him, heading straight for Billy and bowing deeply. "Sir Billy, what can I do for you?" Steve asked, his voice trembling with fear. He knew Billy was one of Sir Stone's men, someone far above his rank. Seeing this, Gavin was dumbstruck. Billy pointed at Gavin, saying, "Steve, this kid wanted you to take us down. We won't hit back. But do you have the guts?" "What?!" Steve was horrified. He turned and glared at Gavin. "You bastard! I'll kill you!" He kicked Gavin in the stomach, making him scream. Before Gavin could react, Steve pinned him down and beat him mercilessly. "Sir Billy, I'll deal with him for you. How dare he jeopardize our relationship?" Steve spat, giving Gavin a couple more kicks. He then turned to Billy, who looked coldly at Jack and Emily. Steve quickly added, "Sir Billy, did these two offend you? I'll teach them a lesson too!" With that, he charged at Jack. Bang! There was a loud impact, and Steve flew back, crashing to the ground. Everyone was stunned. "Who dares attack? Show yourself!" Billy roared, looking around angrily. None of them had seen who acted; they only saw Steve flying back, blood streaming from his mouth. "You work for Stone?" Jack's calm voice broke the silence. Stone was the name of the "Boss of Northside." "Kid, you dare mention my boss by name? Looks like you're looking for tr—" Before he could finish, Billy was sent flying as well.
