Chapter 2

866 Words
Brian stopped mid-sentence, looked away, and fell silent. The atmosphere suddenly got weird. Brian and I had grown up together. He was also the first guy I ever had a crush on. Back in high school, we used to walk to and from school together all the time. Then one day, I overheard Brian telling someone, "I hate vampires more than anything." At the time, I was the only vampire who ever spent time with him. So the person he hated had to be me. After that, I started keeping my distance from him. And now Brian was standing in front of me again, showing up in my life in the most ridiculous way possible. I had no idea if he still hated me. But judging from his reaction just now, he clearly didn't want anything to do with me. I kept my face blank. "Whatever. It was a misunderstanding. I shouldn't have said you couldn't perform." I turned around and walked away. "Cathy." Brian called after me. "Why do you always run away whenever you see me?" I was getting annoyed. "I'm not." He was the one who hated me first. Why was I not allowed to stay away from him? The next day, my roommates and I went jogging around the track. The basketball court was especially loud. I glanced over without thinking and immediately spotted Brian dribbling on the court. He was wearing a black jersey, the muscles in his arms taut as he jumped and sank a clean shot through the hoop. A bunch of girls erupted into screams from the sidelines. Grace was there too, her long hair falling over her shoulders, her makeup perfectly done. She was holding a bottle of water, and she hadn't taken her eyes off Brian once. The moment Brian stepped off the court, she went straight over and offered him the bottle. I looked away. The campus queen had a thing for Brian. Good for her. They'd probably be dating soon. So what, I was just a supporting character in their little game last night? The more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and tripped over something. Before I could even get back on my feet, someone scooped me up and pulled me into his arms. Brian's face was suddenly inches from mine. "Are you okay?" I thought to myself, 'Dude, weren't you just playing basketball? How did you suddenly end up here? Superpowers weren't supposed to be used like this.' "What the hell?" My voice was icy. "Put me down already." Brian froze for a second before gently setting me back on my feet. "You forgot? I'm a vampire." I dusted the dirt off my hands. "I don't feel pain." I looked over his shoulder and saw Grace staring daggers at me. Oh, great. She wasn't seriously jealous because Brian had just picked me up, was she? Seriously... what were these two even trying to pull? Was this some kind of game to them? I glared at Brian. "Stay away from me. Don't drag me into your mess." His brows drew together, his jaw tightening. "What exactly did I do to piss you off?" The nerve of this man. I couldn't even be bothered to answer. I called to my roommates, "Let's go." That night, I set up my phone for my usual livestream. Stella was sitting beside me, eating snacks, while Nia read the comments out loud. "Cathy, there's someone named 'Jane Doe' who's been spamming the chat." I didn't think much of it. "What is she saying?" Nia hesitated. "She's saying you're hiding the truth. That you pretend to help people investigate their relationships, but you're actually pulling shady moves behind the scenes." I leaned closer to look. Jane Doe had already posted more than a dozen comments, each one clearly trying to stir up drama. Jane Doe: [The streamer is literally a homewrecker herself, and she has the nerve to help other people investigate their relationships?] Jane Doe: [She was caught yesterday hugging a guy from the campus basketball team. He already has a girlfriend.] Jane Doe: [She acts like nothing happened. What a shameless bitch.] The chat exploded instantly. Some people were asking if it was true. Others were calling me a scammer. I stared at those comments and actually laughed from sheer anger. Wasn't she talking about Brian hugging me earlier today? Other than Grace, who else would be this desperate to smear me? "Jane Doe." I curled a finger at the camera. "Come on, get on the mic. Hiding behind a screen is boring. If you've got something to say, say it to my face." She refused to join the call for ages. I continued, "You said he has a girlfriend. Who is she? Do you have the guts to name her? You also said I was caught on camera yesterday. Where's the video? Post it and let everyone see it. If you know so much, you must have been there." I added, "And one more thing. What's your relationship with that guy? Who gave you the right to decide what goes on in someone else's relationship?"
