Chapter 2: Dying Tree

1576 Words
It was already nine o'clock when Sharon left the hospital. She hadn't rested much today and was irritated by Jane again. Even when she noticed that someone from the Lu family was following her, she didn't even bother to lose her temper. In fact, it was unreasonable for her to call Jane an untameable bastard. Jane was not untameable, but she was too well-taught to be so devoted to Henry Lu. Until today, Sharon still remembered the first time she met Jane, when the kid was hiding behind the garden, holding a chicken leg in her hand and chewing it with her mouth full of oil. At that time, she saw Sharon was scared to death, and she didn't care to run, and stuffed the chicken leg into her mouth, and she was almost sent to the hospital for rescue. Sharon had heard before that Ben Lu's nephew whose parents had both passed away picked up a little beggar, but she never took it to heart. It was only when she saw Jane that she thought the kid was quite funny. Henry was only 13 years old at the time. Because of his special background, he was raised outside by the Lu family. He was deep-minded and not a likable child. Jane was a stubborn fool who jumped around like a happy donkey all day long. Sharon was busy fighting with others at that time. Anyway, she would either kill others or be killed by others. It was really hard to see someone as stupid as Jane in life, so she would tease her from time to time, scaring Jane so much that she would run away every time she saw Sharon. Later, Henry went abroad to study, and Jane could not follow him, so Sharon asked her to come and keep her by her side for a few years. Now that Henry is back, this little bastard still finds an opportunity to run to Henry. Sharon sometimes couldn't help but want to say something harsh to wake her up, but she could only swallow those words word by word. When it comes to feelings, she has no right to teach Jane a lesson. Sharon thought too much and didn't come back to her senses until she entered the first gate of the residence. This place is a manor house area developed by the Lu family. It is fully closed and private. There are only 10 families in the area where they live. The garden of each house is about four or five times the size of the building area. In New York City, where every inch of land is worth a lot of money, this is a priceless place. When Sharon helped the Lu family to acquire this land, she spent a lot of effort. Nobody knows how many people hated her behind the success. After Sharon parked the car in the garage and just got out of the car, the housekeeper William came out to pick her up. William personally took the luggage from Sharon's hand, looked at her and smiled gently: "Ms Li is back." William was the person left to Ben by his grandfather. He watched Ben grow up and took care of Ben in many things. Although he was called a housekeeper, he was actually an extremely important elder. It was already late at this time. The old housekeeper was old and should have rested long ago. Sharon nodded and replied to him: "You go and rest, don't worry about me." William still smiled and welcomed her into the house and said: "I prepared some food for you, eat some and then rest?" Sharon's sleep and appetite have been poor recently. She didn't eat anything all day and now she has no appetite, but she couldn't bear to disappoint the old man's kindness, so she nodded. She took off her coat and just sat down at the dining table when she heard a sound outside the door. William brought him a bowl of stomach-warming soup and said with a smile: "The young master is back." Sharon hummed, picked up the bowl, lowered her eyelids and drank a mouthful of soup, but didn't get up to take it. When the man's footsteps gradually approached and finally stopped in front of her, she put down the bowl and raised her head. It must be admitted that Ben really has an extremely handsome face. With a high nose and thin lips, the contours from eyebrows to chin seemed to have been carefully carved. Even the slight smell of alcohol on his body at the moment only made him look more lazy and sexy. His appearance was not as sharp and mean as Sharon, but the temperament of a superior in his every move was more attractive, but people were afraid to approach him. Sharon and Ben have known each other for nearly twenty years since they were young. She thought she had already calmed down, but she still lost her mind at this moment. Perhaps because he was a little uncomfortable due to drunkenness, Ben has been massaging his temples since he sat down. Sharon regained her mind and asked after she drank the hangover soup: "Call a doctor to see?" Ben waved his hand, raised his head and unbuttoned his cuffs while saying: "Mr. Wong is there. So I drank a little too much today." Mr. Wong was once a powerful figure in the upper level. Although he has retired, he still has an influence that cannot be underestimated in various parties. So Ben entertained him very attentively today. Sharon went through the name in her mind, thinking of the news she had received recently, and her voice became a little cold: "He wants to intervene in the project in the east of the city?" A project is to be built in the eastern part of the old suburbs of New York. After completion, it will become the sub-center of New York integrating tourism and residence. It is the largest landmark project in New York in the past few years. Sharon has been in charge of this matter. Ben shook his head and smiled, "It was mentioned, but it was just that the Wong family would not get involved in this matter." Since Mr Wong retired, the Wong family has been much more low-key. Some people want to pull the Wong family as partners, but the Wong family is obviously unwilling to stir up such muddy water. Sharon was relieved, and the topic changed, and she mentioned the cooperation that had just been negotiated abroad. Ben listened attentively and occasionally asked some questions. William served the two people at the dining table and sighed slightly in his heart. The two people who had not seen each other for more than half a month. They did not hug and kiss, did not have soft words, and even did not have polite greetings. A good dinner after a long separation turned into a work meeting. The two of them chatted a little late, and Sharon was extremely sleepy when she went to take a shower. She did not notice that the bathroom door was open until Ben circled his waist from behind and took her into his arms. Sharon was covered in moisture, but Ben didn't care. He tightened his arms around her and asked with a frown, "Why have you lost so much weight?" Sharon’s expression was as cold as ever: "It will be fine after a few days of rest." She was very close to Ben, and she felt the person behind him react while she was talking. Sharon hesitated for a moment, pulled away Ben's hand and turned to kneel down. Ben noticed her intention, grabbed her wrist and pulled her up. Sharon didn't understand, so she looked up and looked at Ben. Ben let go of Sharon’s hand, wiped off the water drops rolling down her face, and glanced at the scars left by the gunshot wound on her body. He sighed slightly and said, "No, not today." As soon as he finished speaking, he turned around and left without waiting for Sharon to say more. Sharon looked at his back, and after a moment of shock, she returned to her indifferent expression. Ben had fallen asleep when Sharon came out of the shower. Sharon turned off the wall lamp and went to bed. When she lay down, she faced Ben, but there was still a long distance between them. Her relationship with Ben was like this, not close, and never heart-to-heart. It was like a tight string, and she didn't know when it would break. Ben might not care at all. After all, if Sharon hadn't deliberately stopped him, Ben would have been engaged three years ago. Thinking of this, Sharon laughed a little self-deprecatingly. The psychologist had said before that her feelings for Ben were a little morbid, but no matter how he dug deeper or how he induced, no one could get more out of her. Sharon’s vigilance was too strong, and even seeing a good psychologist would not help. However, Sharon didn't care too much about it. She knew where her problem was, and she knew that no one could save her, so even though she knew that Ben didn't love her, she had to spend all her energy to stay by Ben's side. Just like a dying tree, holding on to the last nutrients to survive.
