What exactly do you wanna know about the boss?" she asked, narrowing her eyes at me with a hint of suspicion. I sighed, bracing myself. "Can you just tell me everything you know about him?" I asked, trying not to sound too desperate. "Well," she started, her tone immediately switching to something dreamy, "first of all, he’s insanely good-looking and has this magnetic energy. You can’t deny it." Her eyes practically sparkled, and I couldn’t help but roll mine. "Seriously?" I groaned. "Do I need to hear that for the hundredth time?" She smirked at my reaction. "Oh, come on. Don’t act like you don’t see it. Anyone with eyes can tell!" "Yeah, sure, he’s got the looks, whatever," I admitted begrudgingly. "But can we please talk about something else? This is getting annoying." Her smirk deepened. "Wait… do you have a thing for him?" "What? No!" I snapped, feeling defensive. "Why would I be interested in someone who basically turned me into his personal slave?" "Okay, okay, relax," she said with a laugh. "I get it, I do." "No, you don’t," I muttered, frustration bubbling to the surface. She tilted her head, her smile softening. "I mean it. I know it’s hard to believe, but he’s not as bad as you think. Yeah, he’s strict, maybe even a little too protective, but he’s not a bad person." "Protective?" I scoffed, shaking my head. "He’s keeping me here against my will. That’s not ‘protective.’ That’s controlling. Do vampires always e*****e humans like this?" She sighed heavily. "It’s not uncommon, but our clan doesn’t usually do it. In fact, this is the first time the boss has ever taken a human as a… well, as a slave." "Great," I muttered sarcastically. "Lucky me." "Look," she said, leaning closer, "I know it’s hard to understand, but I’m sure he has a reason for what he’s doing. And trust me, if it had been another clan, or worse, a wanderer—you’d be in way more trouble right now." "Yeah, I’ll try to remember that," I said bitterly, still blaming myself for ending up in this mess. If only I had listened to Tom and stayed away from that hall. But no, my curiosity had to get the better of me. Now look where it’s landed me. "So, where were we?" I asked, steering the conversation back on track. I needed more information about Dante. She hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I’m not really supposed to share personal details about the boss, but… I can tell you a little. Just keep it between us, okay?" She shot me a wary look. I nodded quickly. "Of course. You can trust me." She glanced around as if to make sure no one was eavesdropping. "There’s this rumor that the boss had a lover… over a thousand years ago." "Wait, what?" I blurted out, staring at her in disbelief. "He’s over a thousand years old?" "Shhh!" she hissed, her eyes darting around in panic. "Keep your voice down!" "Are you serious?" I whispered, still trying to process this insane revelation. "Vampires actually live that long? I thought that was just some made-up myth." She grinned. "It’s true. The boss might look like he’s in his twenties, but he’s actually ancient." "So, he’s basically a grumpy old grandpa?" I deadpanned, earning an uncontrollable fit of laughter from her. "Don’t ever let him hear you say that," she warned between giggles. "He’ll lose it!" I couldn’t help but chuckle a little myself. Dante, the eternal grump, was actually a thousand-year-old grandpa. No wonder he acted like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. "Okay, go on," I urged, waving for her to continue. "Her name was Darlene," Francesca said, her tone sobering. "She was human. They loved each other deeply, but his former clan didn’t approve of their relationship." "Why not? Just because she was human?" I asked impatiently. "Partly," she admitted. "But it was more complicated than that. Darlene agreed to let the boss turn her into a vampire, but the elders still refused to accept her. They found out she was a descendant of Ramon." "Who’s Ramon?" I asked, already hooked on the story. "Ramon was an ancient vampire hunter," she explained. "He was ruthless, killing thousands of our kind. His name alone struck fear into vampires everywhere. The elders were terrified that her bloodline might pose a threat." "So, what happened to her?" I asked, dreading the answer.
