CHAPTER 17
Randall knew his son, William Davies, had always lived in the shadow of his powerful father. Running for Congress was Randall’s idea, but if he won, he thought William would finally be his own man. Randall was, however, a pragmatist and realized William would need all of the influence Randall could bring to bear to win the election. Lindsay Revelle would be a formidable opponent.
Randall and William didn’t disagree on the issues. The conservative doctrine ran consistently through both men’s veins. Where William differed from his father was methodology. He preferred influence peddling to strong-arm tactics. He preferred innuendo to an outright smear campaign. William would stoop just as low as Randall, but he tried to do so with more subtlety and panache.
