let's start 🌸
The silence in the room was heavier than a graveyard. Mary stood motionless, her eyes fixed on the floor, but her mind was a battlefield of screams. She looked up just once, her gaze flickering toward Kai. He was busy stroking Siya’s hair, whispering sweet comforts into her ear.
Not once did he look back. Not once did he acknowledge the woman who had given him her heart. To him, Mary was no longer a person—she was a shield to be used and discarded.
Near the balcony, Mary’s father, Mr. Harrison, looked like a man who had aged twenty years in twenty minutes. His conscience pricked him. "She is my daughter, Catherine... how can we just hand her over?" he whispered, his voice cracked with guilt.
Catherine leaned in, her voice a poisonous honey. "Think with your head, not your heart, Harrison. Look at that man on the sofa. He isn’t human; he’s a butcher. Do you want our delicate Siya to be shredded by him? Mary is strong. She has a future with Kai, and Kai is the one suggesting this! Once the property money comes in, we’ll bring her back. I love her like my own, but we have to save Siya."
Inside, Catherine smirked. 'The money is mine, and Mary is finally gone. Two birds with one stone,' she thought, her greed masquerading as motherly concern.
"Mary, come here," Catherine called out, her voice suddenly dripping with fake affection as she approached Mary.
She grabbed Mary’s arm, her grip tight and bruising. "You have to go with Mr. William for a few days. We’ll come for you soon. Now, let’s go outside."
Mary’s voice was a ghost of a whisper. "No... please, Mother. Don't make me go with him. I'm scared."
Catherine’s face hardened instantly. The mask slipped. "And what? You want my daughter to go instead? You selfish girl!" Then, seeing Mr. Harrison watching, she softened her tone again. "Mary, dear... you’re so brave. Your sister is too fragile for this. You’re our only hope."
Mary shook her head, tears blurring her vision.
"Fine," Catherine hissed into her ear, so low only Mary could hear. "Don't go. And watch as they kill your father right here. Just like your mother died in that car accident... you want his blood on your hands too?"
The mention of the accident—the twisted metal, the smell of gasoline, the cold grip of death—shattered Mary’s last defense. Her knees buckled, but she stood her ground. "No... I won't let anything happen to Dad."
Catherine smiled—a sharp, predatory curve of her lips—and led Mary out like a lamb to the altar.
The foyer felt like a throne room. David William sat there, his posture screaming authority and cold, unyielding power. He looked like a Mafia God, his eyes dark and inscrutable, his presence so thick it felt like the walls were closing in. He was the King of the Underworld, and everyone else was just a pawn.
"Mr. William," Catherine began, her voice trembling with theatrical grief. "We have decided. We are giving you our most precious possession, our Mary... our beloved child. Take care of her until we settle the debt."
David’s gaze shifted. It traveled slowly from Catherine to Mary. Mary felt his eyes—they didn't just look at her; they peeled back her skin, reading the tremors in her soul. She felt exposed, hunted, and yet strangely anchored by his intense focus.
"I asked for her," David said, his voice a low, dangerous vibration, gesturing toward Siya.
Catherine didn't miss a beat. "Oh, Siya is already spoken for. She is Kai’s fiancée. They are to be married soon. We cannot send another man's woman with you."
Mary’s breath hitched. She looked at Kai. He stood there, his arm wrapped around Siya, nodding in agreement. "Yes, that is the truth," Kai said, his voice steady, denying Mary’s existence as his partner in front of the whole world.
The betrayal was complete. The man who had promised her forever was now claiming her sister as his own, just to save his own skin. Mary’s vision blurred. The world became a smear of gray. She had been sold, traded, and disowned in the span of a few heartbeats.
David didn't look at Kai. His eyes were still on Mary—on her trembling lips, her clenched fists, and the way she refused to let a single tear fall. Her silence was louder than Catherine’s drama, and it sparked a dark curiosity in his cold heart.
"Fine," David spoke, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. "The deal is struck. Until the debt is paid in full, this girl—Mary D’Souza—belongs to me."
Mary closed her eyes, swallowing the bitter taste of her own life. Today, she wasn't a daughter, a sister, or a fiancée. She was a commodity. A security deposit. She had been bought by the most heartless man in the country.
David stood up, his towering frame casting a shadow that swallowed Mary whole. "Let's go," he commanded.
He didn't wait for her. He walked out, knowing she had no choice but to follow. As Mary stepped out of her home, leaving behind the wreckage of her heart, she felt David’s gaze on her back—heavy, observing, and terrifyingly permanent.
