I was woken by the smell of syrup and the sound of the t.v. I stirred and groaned, fighting the sleep monster that had me in a headlock when I finally opened my eyes. I was met with one green and one green and brown eye.
“Hey, beautiful. Time to get up. Robin made us some breakfast. You hungry?”
Kris sat next to me and smiled sweetly. I stretched, yawned, and threw an arm over her to snuggle up on her lap. She chuckled and rested an arm across my back and rubbed it.
“Come on, you big baby. Get up. Nobody told you to be up all night talking to sugar daddy.”
I peered up at her with a scowl.
“I wasn't talking to Raphael last night.”
“It's funny that you knew exactly who she was referring to, Vinnie.”
Robin said, laughing, and I smiled at my assumption. I mean, he definitely acted like a sugar daddy yesterday. I slowly lifted myself off Kris and stretched again and looked outside, tryna get a read on the time of day.
“It's 11am, if that's what you were tryna figure out.”
Kris nudged me as she spoke, then got up from the couch and headed into the kitchen with Robin.
Not bad. At least I got a couple of hours.
I stood and headed to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. I headed straight for the kitchen and sat at the island. Robin slid a plate of food in front of me.
“Thanks, mommy.”
I smiled, and Kris laughed at my comment. Robin smiled back at me.
“Of course, sweetie. Eat up!”
Deja vu, much?!
Her comment reminded me of Raphael last night at the dinner table. The memory had me chuckling.
“What's so funny?”
Kris looked at me, waiting for me to answer her.
“Nothing. Binny Just reminded me of Raphael from last night.”
“How'd I remind you of him?”
Binny looked up at me from her plate with a quizzical look.
“Well, we just so happened to have sat right next to the Blakfields and he told me to pretend to like it, cause you already know my anxiety shot up sitting next to those insanely rich people.”
I laughed, and Kris interjected.
“Yeah. Your first thought was probably not wanting to rub off on them. Like, being poor is contagious.”
I screamed out laughing cause that's exactly what I thought. I didn't even have to respond because my laugh answered her suspicion.
“I f*****g knew it!”
Kris lightly shoved me and we all laughed.
“Anyway, my smart ass decided to put on a show and become extra sweet and he followed suit. It was funny in the moment.”
We chuckled some more. We had small talk, as we ate the delicious eggs, sausage and French toast Binny made. That's when Binny cleared her throat and glanced over at Kris. They shared a look and gave a small smile to each other.
“Oh god! What is it now?”
I know those looks from anywhere. What they got on me now?
“Wellll, we just wanted to know why a certain someone was brought back in the arms of a certain man, who's blazer just so happened to lay, ever so nicely, against a certain someone's body. Especially when she left in a gorgeous dress.”
Kris was all smiles and I wanted to snatch her tongue out. She really brought this back around, like she said early this morning. I squinted my eyes at her and Binny snickered.
“Aww nah, don't tell me your brain is in the gutters too, Binny?”
Both Binny and Kris laughed out loud.
“Actually, I was the only one out of the both of us, to believe you wouldn't have gone that far with McCoy… Even with your slight obsession with him.”
I gasped and clutched my heart playfully, and we all continued to laugh. Then, I narrowed my eyes at Binny. She smiled shyly.
“OK. Maybe I believed you 60/40. 60 you didn't and 40 you did.”
We all laughed again and since I was closer to Kris and not Robin, I shoved her.
“Hey, what was that for, she said it!”
“You're closer and it's your fault it was brought up, heffa. Tell your friend she should've had more faith in me, cause you sure didn't, Kris. Also, for your information, Robin… ain't nobody obsessed. I'm just unusually focused.”
We continued to laugh. Once we settled down, I decided to fill them in on the nonsense of last night.
“Since y’all so nosey, let me tell you what happened, cause bitches were trying me.”
Both Kris and Binny's smiles faded and they both became serious. One thing I know for sure is that they don't play about me.
“Oh s**t. Who we gotta f**k up, Vin.”
“I said the same thing this morning, Binny.”
Kris said her last comment with an eerie look on her face. I smiled inwardly because they really were like bodyguards.
“So, I exit the car with Raphael… oh, right. He wanted me to call him by his name. Anyw-”
“Hold up! How did he ask you to call him by his name?”
Robin, this time, instigated this type of talk. She had the biggest smile on her face.
Damn, Kris is rubbing off on her now.
“Seriously?”
I gave Binny a bored look and she smiled.
“That's it? She gets a seriously, while I always get threatened with violence? You be having favorites, I swear.”
Binny and I laughed at Kris’s fake ass pout.
“Damn. Y'all gonna let me finish the story or what. Also, Kris, you're always on that type time, and nobody has time for that.”
Binny and I continued to laugh, while Kris continued to pout.
“Anyway, he helped me out the car and the paparazzi were INSANE. I thought I would be blind once all the flashing ended. I'm telling you, some people just have way too much money cause there's no reason to have a whole ass coliseum inside an art museum. That's the best way to describe that place. It was truly beautiful. Once I saw everyone, I felt underdressed and overly exposed. We descended the steps and-”
Again I was cut off, this time by Kris.
“Wait, you walked up steps, to go down steps once you got inside?”
“Girl, I thought the same thing.”
“Rich folk different.”
We all laughed at Kris's comment, then focused back on me.
“Yeah, but I was in awe of the place. It was gorgeous. It felt as though everyone was staring at us when we walked in. Raphael kept telling me people were looking at me but as soon as we made it down the stairs, everyone huddled around him. I wanted to make my escape, but he held my hand tightly. He was sweet, trying to be thoughtful and considerate of me, but I really just wanted to run and hide. THIS is where s**t starts to get crazy. Damien came out of nowhere calling for me and I was excited to see him. Baby!!! That man looked delicious. Now that I'm thinking about it, he wore the same colors Raphael and I wore. So standing in between the both of them looked like I came with them both… let's not think about that too hard.”
I shuddered and smirked at Kris and Binny. They both chuckled.
“We spoke for two seconds before the fakest b***h alive appeared. When she first showed up, I genuinely thought she was gorgeous. She matched the decor of the whole setup and everything. If you didn't know she could walk and talk, you'd think she was another statue. But then bitches always gotta show that they are, indeed, bitches. She wanted Raphael to dance with her, while being all up on Damien. Mind you, Damien was her date. She wanted to pretend to be blind and I politely offered to help her out if she continued with the bullshit. Later on, she came over to Raphael again, begging for a dance and she still wanted to be slick with the mouth. I told him please take that brat and go. They danced and I ended up dancing with Damien a little later. I go to head back to my seat and THIS b***h, pours an entire cup of chocolate pudding down the front of my dress.”
“WHAT!!”
Kris and Robin both yelled at the same time.
“Naw. Who's shawty?”
“I'm with you on that, Kris. Cause who accidentally on purpose dumps pudding on people. You know what, it doesn't matter. The b***h gonna get rocked either way. What's her name?
I knew Kris and Binny would be upset. Honestly, we're all a little overprotective of each other. I'd be the same way too.
“Her name's Olay.”
“Olay?”
“Not Really, but that's what I'm calling her, Binny.”
“OK, so that's her name then.”
Kris was quiet. I bet silently planning out how she'd deal with the person who tried her best friend.
“I was about done with the heffa and since she wanted to play games, we could both play. Instead of getting angry, I was real nice. I asked for Raphael’s blazer and went and got cleaned up in the bathroom. I walked back out that b***h in nothing but his blazer. Luckily, he's a big guy, cause it became a dress on me. You would've thought I slapped the hell outta her with the face she made. The host, Mrs. Blakfield basically cursed her out for doing what she did to me. Olay honestly embarrassed herself.”
“Well, at least the host was on your side.”
“Yeah, K. Mrs.Blakfield was honestly amazing. She's so sweet and down to earth, but she definitely has a tough side to her as well. I honestly don't know if she was raised in the world of glitz and glam, but she gives “round the way” vibes. Her husband is as sweet as a cuddle bear, just like Mr.Becker.”
I began to think of how beautiful both the Becker’s and Blakfield’s looked being together on the dance floor.
“I watched both the Blakfield’s ’s and Becker’s dance the night away. They looked so much in love. It was a beautiful thing to see.”
Something I hope to see for myself.
They reminded me of my parents and how much in love they were with each other. All the memories that I can remember, I can see my parents being absolutely enthralled with one another. It's something I've always wanted for myself. It's been that type of love I've been chasing after for so long. That's probably why I'm still single… I've been chasing after a ghost. Something that's just as dead as my parents. Kris and Robin looked at me, already knowing what was running through my mind at the moment. They gave me sad eyes but didn't say anything. Kris steered the conversation away from where my thoughts were leading it.
“Well, I'm just happy they were kind to you and on your side. Sometimes, those uppity people can be a real pain in the ass to deal with.”
I smiled at her.
“Yeah. They were great. You'd guys would love them if you ever get the chance to meet them.”
I looked down at my phone to check the time, and it was already after 12, going on 1. I decided to hit up Raphael and just give him my thanks and see if he wanted me to dry clean his blazer. He simply wanted me to return it tomorrow at work, which was cool. The thought of his blazer put a smile on my face. I looked up and saw Kris and Binny were in conversation. I decided to interrupt them.
“You know, when I came back out of that bathroom, I thought Raphael would have a heart attack. Pretty much every damn body, really. The room went silent. Mrs. Blakfield cheesed from ear to ear once she saw me. She was in full support of my get back. It was hilarious! But that's why I ended up in his blazer last night. He, I assumed, kept my dress to get it cleaned.”
For a while, we just chatted amongst ourselves. We cleaned the kitchen and got dressed. We were heading out to run some errands together, especially to go get me a new laptop. The day ended with not much that happened. We said our goodbyes and good nights. I came back home and got myself ready for work the next day. It's been one crazy weekend, and I'm glad it's over.
