Chapter 2

Elara stared at the bold signature drying on the contract, her heart thundering like a caged bird desperate for escape. The pen felt heavy in her fingers, as if the weight of six months with Damien Blackthorne had already transferred into the ink. What had she just done? Damien loomed behind her, his presence a tangible force that made the air in the luxurious office feel thinner. She could sense the heat radiating from his body, smell the faint mix of coffee and that intoxicating sandalwood cologne clinging to his skin. When he leaned down slightly, his breath ghosted across the nape of her neck, sending an involuntary shiver racing down her spine. “Wise choice,” he murmured, voice low and rough like aged whiskey. “Most people would have run.” “I’m not most people,” Elara shot back, turning in the chair to face him. Their eyes locked, his steel-gray and piercing, hers defiant despite the fear and unexpected thrill twisting in her gut. Up close, the sharp line of his jaw and the faint scar tracing his cheekbone made him look less like a billionaire and more like a warrior who had conquered empires. He straightened, that signature cold smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “No. You’re not.” His gaze drifted deliberately down her body, lingering on the way her blouse clung to her breasts from the earlier coffee spill, before snapping back to her face. “My assistant will finalize the details. Your mother’s transfer to St. Mercer’s Hospital begins tonight, private room, top specialists. Consider it the first installment.” Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, but she blinked them away fiercely. Her mother’s cancer treatments had drained every resource they had. This deal wasn’t just survival, it was a miracle wrapped in chains. “Thank you,” she whispered. “Don’t thank me yet.” Damien’s fingers brushed her shoulder as he reached for the contract, the touch light but electric. “Six months, Elara. You live in my world. You play by my rules. And when the cameras are watching, you make the world believe you’re madly in love with the devil.” He called his assistant with curt efficiency, issuing orders like a general on the battlefield. Within minutes, Elara was ushered out with a new black credit card that had no limit and instructions to be ready in two hours. Her tiny apartment felt even smaller when she returned to pack. She stuffed clothes, her laptop, sketchbooks, and the precious photo of her and her mom into a duffel bag. The town car waiting outside gleamed like a promise and a prison. The drive to Blackthorne Tower passed in tense silence, the city lights blurring past as her mind raced with what-ifs. The private elevator opened directly into the penthouse, and Elara’s breath caught. It was magazine perfect, soaring ceilings, art pieces worth more than she’d earn in a lifetime, and windows that made the city below look like scattered diamonds. A grand piano sat in one corner, untouched and elegant. The kitchen island could seat ten. Everything screamed power and isolation. “Welcome to your new cage, Miss Voss.” Damien descended the floating staircase, having changed into a black button-down with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The exposed forearms were veined and strong, hinting at the raw power beneath the civilized exterior. His eyes raked over her simple jeans and sweater with unmistakable heat. “It’s… overwhelming,” she admitted, setting her bag down. “You’ll adjust.” He closed the distance in three strides, stopping close enough that she had to tilt her head back. “Your room is on the right. Mine is directly across. The master suite is for show when needed, photo ops, unexpected guests. I expect you to be convincing, Elara. Touches. Gazes. The kind of chemistry that makes headlines.” Her pulse spiked. “And if I can’t act that well?” A dark chuckle escaped him. One hand came up to trace her jawline, thumb grazing her full lower lip. The contact sent a rush of warmth straight to her core. “Then we practice until you can. But remember the contract, no backing out without consequences.” Dinner was served promptly at eight by a discreet housekeeper who vanished afterward. They ate in silence at first. Seared salmon, asparagus, and a wine so smooth it felt like velvet on her tongue. Damien watched her over the rim of his glass, his expression unreadable. “Tell me about yourself,” he said finally. “The real version, not the file I read.” Elara swirled her wine, gathering courage. “Grew up in a small apartment with my mom. Dad left when I was ten. I put myself through design school on scholarships and late-night gigs. I’m good at what I do creative campaigns, branding. But life got in the way.” She met his gaze boldly. “I’m not some fragile flower, Damien. I won’t break easily.” His eyes darkened with something like approval… and hunger. “Good. I don’t like fragile things. They shatter too quickly.” After dinner, he gave her a tour. The home gym. The library filled with rare books. The rooftop terrace with a private pool that shimmered under the stars. Every step, his hand brushed her lower back or arm, each touch building a slow, torturous tension. Later, alone in her luxurious bedroom with its silk sheets and massive bed, Elara couldn’t settle. She changed into a simple black tank top and soft sleep shorts that rode high on her thighs. The city lights danced beyond the windows as she paced, mind replaying the way Damien’s body had felt when he steadied her earlier, hard, unyielding, masculine. A soft knock broke the quiet. She opened the door to find him there in nothing but low-slung black sweatpants. His torso was sculpted perfection, broad chest tapering to ridged abs, faint white scars across his ribs telling silent stories of a life harder than his billions suggested. A trail of dark hair disappeared beneath the waistband, drawing her traitor eyes downward. “Can’t sleep?” His voice was gravelly, gaze roaming over her bare legs and the way her tank top clung to her breasts. “New environment,” she managed, crossing her arms to hide her body’s reaction. Her n*****s had tightened instantly at the sight of him. Damien stepped inside without asking, the door clicking shut behind him. The room suddenly felt too small. “This arrangement will test us both, Elara. I’m not a gentle man. I take what I want… but I honor deals.” He stopped inches away, heat rolling off him in waves. “Yet looking at you right now, in my home, wearing so little… makes me want to forget the rules.” Her breath hitched as he cupped the back of her neck, pulling her closer. His thumb stroked the pulse point at her throat, feeling it race. She could see the outline of his growing arousal through the thin sweatpants, thick and intimidating. Desire pooled hot and slick between her thighs. “Damien…” It came out as a half-warning, half plea. He leaned in, lips brushing the shell of her ear. “Tell me you don’t feel it too, the pull. The way your body responds when I’m near.” His free hand skimmed down her side, stopping just above the curve of her hip. “I could have you right now. Against that wall. Slow and deep until you scream my name.” Elara’s knees weakened. She wanted it. God, she did. The fantasy flashed vividly: his powerful body pinning her, hands exploring, mouth claiming every inch. But she pushed lightly against his chest, feeling the hard muscle flex under her palms. “Not yet,” she whispered, echoing his earlier restraint. “This is fake, remember?” He released her slowly, eyes blazing with frustrated hunger. “For now.” At the door, he paused. “Sleep well, fiancée. Tomorrow, the real performance begins.” The door closed, leaving Elara flushed, aching, and wondering how long she could resist the devil who now owned her nights.
