CHAPTER EIGHT

1106 Words
Alvin felt trapped in a whirlwind of emotions as he sat across from Stella in the café. The familiar surroundings, once filled with laughter and carefree moments, now felt heavy with tension. Stella's tear-streaked face and the crumpled letter in her hand were constant reminders of the turmoil they were both facing. "Alvin, please," Stella pleaded, her voice trembling. "I know you care about me. We’ve been through so much together. You can’t just throw that away because of some girl." Alvin took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart. "Stella, I do care about you. You’re my best friend, and I want to be here for you. But I can’t be the person you want me to be. I love Sophia." Stella's eyes widened in disbelief, and she shook her head. "You don’t understand! I’ve loved you for so long, and I thought… I thought maybe there was still a chance for us. You said you’d help me through this, that we could figure things out together." "But I can’t lead you on," Alvin replied gently. "I’ve tried to be honest with you. I thought we could support each other, but I can’t pretend to have feelings I don’t. I’m sorry." Stella’s grip on the letter tightened, and she looked down, her voice barely a whisper. "You don’t know what it’s like to feel so alone, Alvin. I thought you were my safety net. Now, it feels like you’re slipping away." Alvin felt a pang of guilt. He didn’t want to hurt Stella, but he also knew he had to be true to himself. "I’m not going anywhere. I’ll always be your friend, but I can’t be the boyfriend you want. I need you to understand that." Just then, the door of the café swung open, and in walked Sophia, her presence instantly electrifying the air. Alvin’s heart raced at the sight of her, but his joy quickly turned to dread as he realized the timing couldn’t be worse. She was here to grab a coffee, completely unaware of the emotional storm brewing between him and Stella. As Sophia approached the counter, Alvin’s stomach twisted. He wanted to call out to her, to warn her, but the words caught in his throat. Instead, he turned back to Stella, who was watching Sophia with a mix of anger and despair. "Look, I don’t want you to hurt yourself," Alvin said, trying to redirect the conversation. "We can talk about this. I’m here for you." But Stella wasn’t listening. Her gaze was fixed on Sophia, and Alvin could see the tension building within her. "You think she’s better than me? That she deserves you more?" Stella’s voice was rising, filled with hurt and frustration. Alvin reached out to touch her hand, desperate to calm her down. "It’s not about that. This isn’t a competition. I just… I need you to understand." Before he could finish, Stella stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "You don’t get it, do you? You’re choosing her over me! After everything we’ve been through!" At that moment, as if on cue, Sophia turned around, coffee in hand. Her eyes met Alvin’s, and he could see the shock and hurt reflected in her gaze. It was as if time slowed down; everything around them faded away, leaving just the three of them in that charged moment. "Alvin?" Sophia’s voice was barely above a whisper, but it cut through the tension like a knife. "What’s going on here?" Alvin’s heart raced as he saw the realization dawn on her. He opened his mouth to explain, but before he could say anything, Stella stepped forward, her emotions spilling over. "He was just telling me how much he loves you, Sophia! Isn’t that right, Alvin?" Alvin’s stomach dropped. "Stella, please…" he started, but it was too late. Sophia’s expression shifted from confusion to betrayal, and before he could reach out to her, she turned on her heel and bolted out of the café. "Wait, Sophia!" he shouted, but she was already gone, leaving behind an echo of hurt and anger. Stella’s face was a mix of triumph and despair. "See? You can’t even keep her. She’s not worth it, Alvin. She doesn’t understand you like I do." "That’s not true!" Alvin shot back, his frustration boiling over. "You don’t understand anything! I care about both of you, but I can’t be with you like that. I love Sophia!" Stella’s expression hardened, and Alvin could see the pain in her eyes. "You think you’ll be happy with her? You don’t know what she’s capable of. Alvin stared at his phone, the screen reflecting his own bewildered face. He had been trying to reach Sophia for what felt like an eternity, each failed attempt twisting the knife in his gut. Five times he had called, each ring a fresh wave of anxiety, until finally, the truth slammed into him: Sophia had blocked his number. The digital barrier felt as solid as a wall, a clear message that he had messed up, big time. His world crumbled around him. The vibrant colors of life seemed to fade, replaced by a dull, monotonous gray. Food lost its appeal, and the thought of leaving his apartment felt like an insurmountable task. He became a recluse, shutting out friends, family, and the world at large. Every notification, every unanswered message, was a stark reminder of the chasm that had opened between him and Sophia. He replayed their last conversation, searching for a clue, a hint of what went wrong, but found only the echoing silence of his own deceit. Sophia, on the other hand, was a tempest of emotions. The betrayal cut deep, a wound that festered with every passing moment. Alvin's lie, the promise that he had ended things with Stella, was a dagger to her heart. But the humiliation she suffered at Stella's hands was a different kind of pain. To be publicly belittled, to have her insecurities laid bare, and then to see Alvin stand by, silent and seemingly helpless, was a crushing blow. He had claimed to love her, yet he had failed to defend her when she needed him most. Days turned into weeks, and the silence between them was deafening. Alvin knew he had to fix things, but the fear of rejection held him captive. He drafted countless apologies, each one more eloquent than the last, but none felt right. He knew he had to face Sophia, to look her in the eyes and beg for forgiveness, but the thought of seeing the hurt and disappointment in her gaze paralyzed him.
