Chapter Eleven: Shadows and Schemes
Kael & Nysera – POV
The forest was silent except for the soft rustle of leaves under Kael’s boots. Moonlight spilled across the hidden grove, illuminating Nysera’s pale face like a blade.
She moved close, fingers brushing a silver dagger at her side — ceremonial, dangerous, symbolic. Kael’s jaw tightened.
“We have a problem,” Nysera whispered. Her voice was velvet dipped in poison.
Kael crossed his arms. “Aurelia’s bond with him is forming. Malachai isn’t going anywhere willingly.”
“Exactly.” Nysera’s eyes glittered. “So we make him unwilling — subtly. The mortal flame has him distracted. Her magic, her possessiveness… it can be turned against him.”
Kael frowned. “You mean manipulate her?”
Nysera tilted her head, letting the moonlight catch her sharp cheekbones. “No. Remind him of the past. We introduce doubt. Anger. Fear. He doesn’t resist her — he wants her. But if he falters even once…”
Kael’s teeth ground. “And the Binding?”
Nysera’s smile was small, calculating. “It’s not complete. We fracture trust before the ritual is finished. One emotional blow, one small provocation… and the bond shatters like glass.”
Kael exhaled slowly. “Then what? The prophecy?”
She leaned closer, voice barely audible. “Then Aurelia fails. Malachai loses control. And I step back in — the woman he never forgot.”
Kael nodded. “So we start with… her?”
Nysera’s grin was cold and deliberate. “The mortal flame. Make her doubt. Make her jealous. Make her burn for him… then we strike.”
The plan was simple. Elegant. Deadly.
Aurelia – POV
The next day, Aurelia cornered Malachai in the Veil chamber.
He was reviewing shadow maps of the fractured realms, his dark silhouette folded in concentration.
“I need answers,” she said, voice sharp. Her silver magic pulsed faintly in response to the bond — jealousy lingering, barely contained.
He looked up, calm as ever. “About what?”
“About her.” She didn’t lower her gaze. “Nysera. I want to know why she exists in your world at all.”
Malachai’s shadows coiled slightly tighter, reacting to her anger. “She existed before you entered my life.”
“Before I mattered,” Aurelia said. The words were bitter, but her chest heaved — not from weakness, but from wanting honesty.
He stepped closer, careful not to touch, but close enough for the bond to thrash violently.
“I won’t lie,” he admitted. “She was… loyal. Not love. Not desire. Not like you.”
“That doesn’t matter.” Her fingers twitched, silver sparks flickering. “She has influence over you. And I can feel it.”
Malachai’s jaw flexed. “You do feel the bond, don’t you?”
Her chest tightened. “Every thought. Every glance. Every hesitation. I can feel her near you.”
He smiled faintly, the first hint of softness. “Good. Then you know how powerful you are. And how dangerous she is.”
Nysera – POV
Later that evening, Nysera entered the fortress deliberately.
Her arrival was unannounced. Her footsteps soft against obsidian floors.
She found Aurelia in the central hall — alone.
“Ah, the mortal flame,” Nysera said smoothly, letting her shadowed gown swirl around her like living smoke. “I wondered how long it would take you to notice me.”
Aurelia straightened. Silver light wrapped faintly around her hands, ready. “Notice you? I’ve been feeling you.”
Nysera stepped closer, moving with predatory elegance. “Good.” Her voice dropped, teasing. “Because I like to be felt.”
The bond flared violently. Aurelia felt Malachai’s reaction instantly — a pull, a desire, a protective surge. Her chest burned with heat and jealousy.
“Stay away from him,” Aurelia hissed.
Nysera smirked, brushing an invisible strand of hair from her own shoulder — close enough to provoke, but not touch Malachai. “I’m not touching. Not yet. I just want him to remember the world before you… mortal.”
Aurelia’s hands surged with silver magic. Shadows coiled instinctively around her.
“You will not destabilize us,” she warned.
Nysera tilted her head, mock-polite. “Destabilize? No. I just remind him. That’s all a woman needs to do.”
The tension exploded. The bond thrummed violently. Aurelia felt every flicker of Malachai’s emotion — protective, drawn, and yet… curious about the woman before her.
Her body reacted instinctively. Anger, heat, desire — all intertwined.
Nysera smiled faintly, stepping back, letting the tension linger like smoke. “I’ll leave… for now.”
But the damage was done.
And Aurelia knew — this was only the beginning.
