*** Steven POV***
The next two days went by in a blur and I hadn't seen or spoken to Nick since my party on Saturday. He wasn't at training with the rest of us on Sunday and he's not at school today. Even if it were a mistake, I knew my father would set to make an example out of the situation Nick caused. He's lucky he didn't lose his life over one stupid drunken kiss.
'We almost chose him, Nix.' I sighed as I walked to my next class
'Humans are stupid. They're constantly making mistakes.' he retorted
'You were in agreement with me. Don't act like you weren't all for having the twins as Beta and Gamma.'
'I would've done what was right for the pack. Who is the best person for the job? I was ok with giving Nick the position and he couldn't be trusted to handle one ceremony. He's not fit to lead our pack under any capacity. And since we were on the spot , we did what was best. We gave the position to the woman born into.'
'I'm sure Piper will do just fine as our Gamma.'
'She's a woman! It's never been done. But we had no other choice. And it's too late to take it back.'
Before I could answer I heard a voice call out to me.
"Steve! Wait up!" I turned around to come face to face with Cali. She was a human girl who'd always had a crush on me. She stood 5'5 with hazel eyes and curly brown hair that hung down to the middle of her back. She was mixed with Puerto Rican and Black, with curves in all the right places. All in all, she was gorgeous. But she was not for me. My future Luna was a werewolf, I just hadn't found her yet.
"Sup, Cali?" I asked as she caught up to me
"Nothing. Where you headed to?" she smiled up at me
"Coach Pete's."
"Ah, AP History. I'm just in the regular class with Mrs. Thomas."
I began walking and a slower pace so that Cali could keep up with me.
"So what's up? I know you didn't rush all the way over here just to ask me where I was going." I chuckled
"True, but since we're kind of going the same way, I figured we could walk together?" she asked questioningly
I nodded. The next few steps were silent. With my wolf's hearing I could tell her heartbeat was picked up. Something was bothering her and she wouldn't just spit it out. I waited a few more seconds and still she said nothing. We continued in silence before stopping outside of Mrs. Thomas' class. I paused to give her a few seconds to tell me whatever it was. We'd been friends since middle school, she should be able to tell me anything. I wish I could say the same was true for me. Before Cali spoke she took a deep breath.
"Steve, I was just wondering." she paused and swallowed
"Yes?"
"Uh... I was just, uh, wondering if you, uh, were gonna go to prom? And if you were, I know it's not normally the, uh, girls who ask. But if you were gonna go. I wanted to know if you, uh, if you would maybe wanna go with me?" she looked up at me with fear in her eyes
I took a second to respond but perhaps I took too long because she blurted out "You don't have to reply right now. Think about it and let me know okay? I've liked you for a long time and I don't want to miss my chance before high school is over."
Before I could say anything she spun on her heels and walked into the classroom.
'You've got to be joking right. That human has been clinging around you for years and now has finally mustered up some semblance of courage to try and ask you out to a stupid human dance. You'd better say no.' Nix scoffed
'I'm single. She's cute and-'
'Do NOT encourage her.' he cut me off
***Piper POV***
"As the future Gammaa of this pack, you will be in charge of making sure day to day operations run smoothly. If anyone has a need or a question, you will be the first they look to. You are to oversee the work of the future commanding officer. He will be in charge of the soldiers but you will be in charge of him. You two are to work together to bring up the next army. The Gamma also in charge of any all security details. You set the schedule, manage the rotations for border patrol, fix any issues before they become problems." my father paused before continuing "Any time the Beta is out or unavailable, you will become the acting Beta, your word is as good as his. And his is as good as the Alpha's. If someone doesn't like the decision made they can take it up the chain, but normally the Alpha backs his Beta, and the Beta backs his Gamma. Seeing as you will become acting Beta on occasion, you should also brush up on some of the Beta duties..."
I was mentally jotting down notes as my father continued to talk to me. There was so much more to becoming the Gamma of a pack than I had previously assumed. However, I never thought in a million years that I'd actually get the chance to learn it. Much less perform the job. Being born a woman sucked. But I was gong to give it my all and be the best damn Gamma this pack has ever seen. Hell! I was going to be the best Gamma that anyone in any pack had ever seen.
***Spencer POV***
"Piper has really taken to her Gamma studies." I was giving report to Jason "I know it's not the ideal situation to have a female Gamma, but I'll do everything I can to prepare my daughter for success."
"Spencer, we've been friends all of our lives. You're not just my Gamma, you're also my best friend. I trust you with my life and that means I trust you with my pack." he smiled at me
Jason, Garret, and I had known each other since we were pups. We were all born within a few months of one another and were brought up together. Our parents were friends and their parents and so on. Even so, sitting in the Alpha's office causes even the best of friends to show an air of respect. He wasn't just our best friend, he was our Alpha and it was best not to forget that, no matter how much he loved us.
"Garret, how are the boys?" Jason asked
"Alex is taking well to his studies as well. Nick is acting like a wounded pup, tail tucked between his legs. But the boy has learned a valuable lesson. Thank you Alpha Jason for sparing his life." Garret responded
"Although it is appreciated it, please don't be so formal with me. I would never just hurt my lifelong friend's child. My wolf on the other hand needed some convincing. However we are not mindless, feral beasts who are ruled by our wolves."
"Either way he has learned his lesson. So thank you."
Sipping my bourbon I settled deeper into my chair. After business was conducted, we fell into the roles of friends. Laughing and telling stories. This is the way it should be. This is the way I hope it is for Piper.
'Moon Goddess, watch over her.' I thought
