“We were both adults who needed to satisfy our needs and we did so that was fair enough” Daisy said.
Those words kept playing in my head
I poured more tequila into my glass and winced slightly as it burned its way down my throat.
I shouldn't be this upset.
It wasn't the words that annoyed me. It's the rejection.
Never.
Not even once have I f****d a lady and she dares to resist me. They always come back for more, they always stay at my beck and call.
But this writer, this lady I have watched touch herself at the sound of my moan, this lady I am meant to protect just dared me.
I grind my molars.
I filled my glass again and drank at once.
I knew she didn't mean what she said, I could hear the pain in her voice when she said it. But she had the guts to say it anyway.
And that…that was an insult.
At the very moment, I wanted to grip her by the throat
Shove her by the wall, kiss her till she gasped for air.
Fuck every part of her body and give her several orgasms until she remembers who she belongs to.
“I can't,” I murmured, “I just can't.” Because wanting her made me forget why I was really here.
I grabbed my phone. So I texted Viktor.
Me: Need you here. Now.
Viktor: Already on my way. I replied almost immediately.
Mark was preparing breakfast.
I perceived a soft cologne, a mixture of vanilla and flower, the exact type that turned heads.
Then footsteps on the stairs. I looked up.
Daisy.
I already knew it was her from the scent. Why did I even bother looking?
“Hey” she said stiffly
“Hi”
She sat at the table. Far end. Far from me.
I couldn’t help but steal glances at her. She was wearing an oversized T-shirt. My t-shirt and leggings. No makeup yet she looked so ravishing.
And uncomfortable.
Mark brought coffee and served.
"Thank you," she murmured.
Then silence. The only sound in the room was that of plates, spoons, forks, and cups.
No words, no eye contact.
The sound of the doorbell interrupted the tension.
"That'll be Viktor," I said.
I opened the door. Viktor stood there holding a white envelope.
"Morning," he said. Then his eyes went past me. To Daisy. In my oversized shirt.
His eyebrows shot up.
His expression said what his mouth couldn't. And good for him, he swallowed those words.
“Sit,” I said, gesturing to the dining table.
We walked to the table. Viktor's eyes kept flicking to Daisy. Taking in the t-shirt.
"Hi, Daisy," Viktor said, extending his hand.
She shook it. "Hey."
Mark brought more coffee. Viktor sat. Set the envelope on the table.
She looked at him again, this time with more interest “What's that?" Daisy asked.
His eyebrows rose slightly."Found this on your door when I came in. No postage. Hand-delivered."
Daisy froze.
My jaw tightened. "When?"
I picked up the envelope, opened it, and brought out a piece of paper.
Handwritten.
"Where Does My Heart Beat Now" - Céline Dion
“Just a song title and artist.” The words came out harshly. Who goes around risking their lives entering a premises like mine just to drop a song title?
I took a sip of my coffee and studied Daisy's face, she was unusually quiet like she had a lot running through her mind.. Her face had gone pale.
"What is it?" Viktor asked quietly.
She stood. Hands shaking. "That's... that was our song," she said, he voice was trembling
"Whose song?" I asked, furrowing my eyebrows.
"Mine and Samuel. My ex. He used to play it all the time.” her voice was low “he said it reminded him of me."
My jaw dropped. I stared at the paper again. Then at her. Her lips were shaking, her chest rising and falling.
"When was the last time anyone mentioned this song?" Viktor asked.
"Two years ago. When he left. I haven't heard it since." Her voice was breaking, her eyes were glassy.
Viktor leaned forward. "This stalker knows about your ex. Something personal. Something intimate."
I thought of it and that made sense.
"Someone close," I added. "Someone who knew about the relationship, every detail. "
"Or maybe the ex himself," Viktor suggested
Daisy shook her head, tears running down her cheeks at this point. "Samuel wouldn't do this."
"You told me before that he disappeared without an explanation," I cut in. "What if he didn't disappear? What if he's been watching you this whole time?" I tried sounding as soft as I could.
"That's insane."
"Is it?" Viktor pulled out his tablet.
"Samuel Chen. Tech consultant. No family. No friends. No trace after two years."
"So?"
"So people don't just vanish. Unless someone erased them. Or unless Samuel Chen never existed in the first place."
Daisy collapses back on her seat.
"You think it was a fake identity?" She asked.
"I think someone got close to Daisy under a false name. Then it disappeared." Viktor said flatly
"What would he need from me?" Daisy's voice was low, tears rolling down her cheek uncontrollably. "I'm just a writer."
"You have access, Daisy," I said quietly.
She looked at me. Confused.
"You are no ordinary writer Daisy. You are General Macklin's daughter. One of the most powerful military commanders."
Understanding dawned on her. Then anger.
"You think someone sent Samuel into my life to use me and get to my father?"
"I think it's possible. But we are not sure yet.
"We dated for just 4months but I am sure Samuel loved me. He wouldn't" she sounded broken.
Viktor and I exchanged looks.
It is easier to get broken by someone close to you compared to a stranger.
She saw it. "What?" she asked
"Her face crumpled. Pain. Exhaustion. Confusion. All at once."
"Did Samuel ever ask about your father? About his work? About military operations?" I asked just trying to figure things out.
"He was curious. But everyone's curious."
"Did he ever ask to visit your family? Meet the General?"
"Once. But my father was overseas and—" She stopped. "Oh, God."
"We don't know anything for sure," I said.
"But you suspect."
She nodded and started to work slowly
“Daisy,”.... I started.
“Don't, ” she said quietly. “Don't say whatever you're about to say. I can't handle any more suspicious”
She turned and took little steps heading toward the guest room.
My chest squeezed as I stared at that note.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown: Enjoying your morning? I hope Daisy likes the song. And tell her... he's been watching. Always watching.
My blood turned to ice. I completely forgot I called Viktor over for a reason.
I ran upstairs. Burst into the guest room.
Daisy was at the window. Looking out at the city.
"Get away from the window." My voice was harsh. "Now."
She turned. Saw my face. Moved immediately."What's wrong?" she asked.
I showed her the text.
Her face went white.
"What do we do?" she asked her force shaking.
I pulled her close. Away from the window.
"We lock down. We stay inside. We figure out who's doing this."
"And then?"
"And then I make them regret ever scaring you."
She looked up at me. "You said last night was a mistake."
silience
"Then why do you care so much about protecting me?, Or am I just a job to you?"
