Daisy’s Pov
He opened his mouth to talk but the words hung in the air. Like he was, his expression was unreadable.
“I will surely get to the root of this”
My body shook, tears pricked at a corner in my eyes.
Then we heard it.
BANG!
The window exploded. Glass shattered everywhere.
I screamed.
In one swift motion, he covered my mouth with his hand and tackled me on the floor. His chest pressed against my back, his face was close to my neck, pretty close that I could feel his breath on my skin.
"My pulse quickened. My heart raced. He was solid against me, protective. Even now, with bullets flying, I noticed how good he smelled.
God, what was wrong with me? He was doing his job."
BANG! BANG!
More shots. Hitting the wall above us.
"Stay down!" Killian said, his voice close to my ear. “Don't move”
My heart was pounding. Beads of sweat appeared on my forehead, my lips, and my body, which were all shaking. I had never been in a live shooting scene.
“Daisy Macklin there is no need to hide any longer, you'd better come out now, " a voice yelled from outside, not familiar, not Samuel's, not recognizable.
Adrenaline flooded through me, my palms became moist, and sweat was dripping down my face.
If it wasn't Samuel's voice, then surely they were sent by one of my dad's numerous enemies.
“If they have an issue with my dad, why don't they go after him? Why come for me instead?"
" Because you can't crack a soldier with pain. But threaten his family, and he'll betray his country." Killian replied in a cold voice.
He turned and crawled toward the nightstand and picked up a gun.
Another shot hit the lamp. It shattered.
"Killian!" I called my voice pure terror as I watched him move away from me.
"Don't move. Stay flat," he whispered, his voice rougher now.
He moved to the window. Staying low he raised his head carefully to look outside.
BANG!
He ducked. The bullet whizzed past his head. My vision blurred. My mouth dropped open. “What if he didn't dodge?”
"f**k!" he cursed.
Downstairs, I heard Mark shouting and Viktor's voice responded. The door burst open. Viktor rushed in. Gun already drawn.
"Are you guys ok?" he asked with a shaky voice.
I just nodded, I had lost the capacity to speak. My chest was tight.
"Yeah. Shooter across the street. Black sedan." Killian said sharply.
"On it." Viktor moved to the other window and took a position.
BANG! BANG!
The window exploded.
I tried to scream. But Killian's hand clamped over my mouth. Pulling me against his chest
"Breathe," he whispered. "I've got you."
“They keep coming for me,” I murmured my heart was raw and my body was humming with reality.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
My legs were shaking.
Mark appeared. Gun out. Terrified.
"Back exit! Now!" Killian's command.
Viktor led us to a big beautiful portrait that looked like it cost a fortune and quickly he pulled it off the wall.
My eyes widened in shock.
“A door” I asked more like thinking aloud.
"What the hell?" I whispered. "Does that actually work?"
Killian's hand on my mouth hardened.
BANG!
So close.
We were already descending the secret stairs. Seconds later, we were at the garage where 2 cars were parked.
"Split up," Viktor said. "Harder to track that way."
We walked toward the SUV, my knees were shaking and Killian shoved me inside.
His hand left my mouth finally.
I gasped.
BANG! BANG!
More shots.
“Buckle your seat belt and close your eyes” he said, holding his gun in one hand and the steering wheel with the other.
“Don't look, don't scream, just trust me” he said.
“What are you doing”
No response
I heard us burst through the garage door. Metal screaming. I instinctively grabbed the door with my eyes still closed.
Then I heard different gun sounds
BANG, CRAK, CRAK, BANG.
Killian was most probably driving with one hand and shooting with the other yet I didn't dare open my eyes. I was just trembling.
Mark and Viktor were firing as well.
But we didn't crash. We just kept driving
Then I heard the gun sounds die down as we drove further.
"Are they gone?" I asked in a low voice.
"For now," he replied. Then silence
“You should relax now” he said “catch some breath.”
slowly I opened my eyes and adjusted myself on my seat, my heart was racing. I looked back through the rear-view mirror and the only car behind us was that of Viktor and Mark.
I mentally assessed my question for a few seconds then I asked."Where are we going now?"I whispered.
"Safe house, a different one."
“With Viktor and Mark”
“Nope,” he replied plainly, “Viktor has some digging to do.”
I nodded.
Silently, tears ran down my face. Someone just tried to kill me, and what is worse is that I don't even know who.
"Killian."
"Yeah?" he replied, glancing at me.
"How did they know exactly where we were?"
“Surely they have been watching. Or maybe…” the word lingered in his throat.
“Or what?”
“Tracking you”
“What…”
My phone buzzed. .
I shook. noticing Jordan's name flash on the screen.
I swiped and placed the phone to my ear.
“Hey bestie” he sounded excited
“Hi ”
“Are you ok?” he asked, “You don't sound too good ” he persisted
Of course, I don't sound too good. Some just stalked me, came to my hiding place, and shot at me.
“I am fine.”I lied.
“Liar. I know you." His voice was soft. Concerned. "I called earlier and up to now you haven't returned the call yet. Daisy, that is unlike you.
"I placed my hand on my forehead and sighed. Oh! Yeah, that's right. Jordan had called yesterday—right when Killian and I were... I'd forgotten to call him back after everything that happened.".
“I am so sorry, bestie, just a lot of chapters to write and it is overwhelming.”
He chuckled “I would only forgive you if you were in one condition” he stated.
“Ok spill”
“Let me take you to lunch. That Italian place you love. We can talk about whatever is going on with you over lunch. You don't have to deal with it alone."
My chest tightened.
From my side vision, I could see Killian's jaw tighten, his eyes were on me burning into the side of my face.
"Jordan, I can't right now…" I managed to say.
"Please, Daisy. I miss my best friend."
I knew he really did because I miss him too. For the past few years ever since my ex-boyfriend disappeared. Jordan and I talked every day, hung out often and we are always in each other's businesses.
“I miss you too,” I said.
sincerely I miss his little jokes, I miss those days we stroll down town late at night just to get my favorite ice cream. Then my life was beautiful and peaceful, but not now.
"...so lunch tomorrow? That Italian place?" I heard Jordan ask from the other end.
"Not possible, Jordan. I'm busy" I insisted.
I saw Killian's hand tighten on the steering wheel. Knuckles white.
“Come on, Daisy. Please? I'm worried about you. You sound off."
He does sound genuinely worried.
I glanced at Killian. His jaw was clenched. Eyes fixed on the road.
But I could feel the anger radiating off him.
"Jordan, I really can't"
"Is someone there with you?" Jordan's voice changed. Sharper. "Who's with you, Daisy?"
Killian's hand shot out. He grabbed my phone and took it closer to his mouth.
"She'll call you back." He dropped the call and tossed the phone into the backseat.
"What the hell?" I snapped. "That was rude"
