weird dream

--- Chapter Three POV: Elara The dream still clung to me like a shadow. I sat on the edge of the stiff hospital bed in the intern lounge, fingers tangled in my damp hair as I tried to steady my breathing. That dream—it had felt real. Too real. Lucien’s voice, low and possessive. Kael’s growl, dark and hungry. The heat between them. The way my name rolled off their tongues like a secret. My skin flushed at the memory. Was it even a dream? I shook the thought off and stood, shrugging on my lab coat. Today was my first day. I couldn’t afford to look flustered—or haunted. Out in the hall, a small group of interns had already gathered near the reception desk. Everyone looked fresh, nervous, hopeful. I stood among them, but it felt like I was carrying something they weren’t. A secret I didn’t understand. A truth I hadn’t asked for. And then they walked in. Kael and Lucien. Side by side. Commanding. Dangerous. Devastating. Kael wore a black shirt that hugged his broad chest, paired with slacks that matched the sharpness in his jawline. His gaze cut across the room with the cold precision of a blade. Lucien, in contrast, wore a deep blue button-down rolled at the sleeves, the fabric clinging just enough to his lean frame. A silver bracelet gleamed on his wrist, and his smirk held a quiet arrogance, like he knew every secret in the room—including mine. The air shifted the second they entered. Everyone stood a little straighter. Even the silence felt taut. Kael’s voice was crisp. “You’ll be split into teams. Follow instructions exactly. There are no second chances in this field.” Lucien chuckled. “Let’s try not to terrify them just yet, Kael.” Kael didn’t blink. I was paired with an intern named Jason—confident, smug, and far too comfortable. As we walked toward our assigned department, he leaned in with a grin. “You look too soft for this place. No offense. Pretty, though.” Before I could answer, a shadow fell over us. Lucien. He stepped in close, his smile polite—but his tone was all ice. “You here to learn something, Jason, or run your mouth?” Jason stiffened. “I—was just making conversation.” Lucien’s eyes narrowed. “This isn’t a nightclub. You want to flirt, talk to a mirror. Focus.” Jason flushed and retreated without another word. Lucien turned to me. That smile softened, warmer now—almost apologetic. “Some people forget their place. Don’t let them distract you.” I swallowed hard. “Thanks, Dr. Lucien.” “Lucien,” he corrected, voice dipping low. “When we’re alone.” He winked and walked off, leaving me breathless and blinking after him. The rest of the morning passed in a blur. I shadowed another doctor, trying to focus, but I kept catching glimpses of Lucien and Kael. Lucien was magnetic—laughing, charming, surrounded by nurses like he didn’t even notice. But whenever his eyes met mine, something in his expression faltered. Just for a second. Kael, on the other hand, moved like a shadow. Quiet. Efficient. Unapproachable. He barely looked my way. But when he did… It felt like gravity shifted. I tried to shove the thoughts away until later that afternoon, when we were dismissed for a short break. I wandered off toward the records room, tucked away at the back of the hospital. I needed quiet. I needed air. I reached for a file on the shelf, fingers brushing cold paper. Then I felt it. Someone behind me. I turned. Lucien. He stepped in and quietly closed the door behind him. His gaze locked onto mine. “You’ve been avoiding me.” “I’ve been working,” I replied quickly, pulse spiking. He took a slow step closer. “But you feel it. Don’t you?” I froze. “Feel what?” “The pull. Between us.” “I…” I looked down. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Lucien moved even closer, invading my space but still not touching me. His scent hit me—musk and spice and something darker. My knees nearly gave out. His voice was velvet. “Even if you don’t understand it, your body knows. Mine does.” I backed into the filing shelf, heartbeat thunderous. “You shouldn’t be here.” “I know,” he whispered. “But I can’t stay away. My wolf—he’s restless around you.” I blinked. “Wolf?” A flicker of something wild flashed in his eyes. But before I could say another word, the door creaked open. Kael stood there. Still. Dangerous. Silent. “Lucien,” he said, voice like steel. “Now.” Lucien smirked at me before slipping past Kael without a word. Kael didn’t follow immediately. He stood in the doorway, gaze locked on mine. I couldn’t breathe. And then he turned and walked away. I was left alone, heart racing, skin burning, and a fire beneath my skin I didn’t know how to name. --- That night, I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, too wired for sleep. Something felt... wrong. Off. Like I wasn’t alone. The air in my room had gone still. Too still. My body stiffened, every nerve on edge. I didn’t hear anything. Didn’t see anyone. But I felt it. A presence. Watching. Waiting. I closed my eyes tight and told myself I was imagining things. Tomorrow would be exhausting. I needed rest. Still, the feeling didn’t leave. It settled over me like a second skin. Close. Too close. --- To be continued... -
