After parking by the red truck, Eve was quick to notice my reaction to the Toyota, and asked “So what was that all about?”
“Uh well.. just boy troubles really.” I replied, trying to shrug off the question.
“Ok spill it, what’s up?” Evelyn said.
“That is Danny’s truck. He asked me to the homecoming dance. Several times actually.” I said reluctantly but dreamy eyed.
“Ok, continue..” Eve said, urging Nova to explain.
“Well you know. He’s tall, handsome, athletic, smart, and actually he’s really sweet… Did I mention handsome? He's kinda the first guy I actually like, But I had to turn him down since I can’t go.” I said, begrudgingly admitting my feelings.
“What do you mean you can’t go? You don’t have to go to the festival with me and your parents, you can skip and live a normal human night with a hot guy from school.” Eve stated matter of factly. “Is this the same Danny you’ve had a crush on since he moved here a couple months ago?” She pressed.
“Yes actually. I’ve gone to every single festival since I can remember and this one is the day right after your birthday and you might find your mate!” I said resolutely.
“Ok but what if you miss out on a chance to be with your mate?” Eve asked.
“I’m human, remember? I won’t have a mate.” I said.
“You don’t know that. Werewolves mate with humans often enough but that’s not what I meant. You shouldn’t miss out on having a human relationship, you know having a boyfriend.” Eve scolds.
“I know but I wish I could just invite him to the festival instead then I could be your backup AND have a date with McHottie.” I tease.
“That’s not a bad idea actually, if he has connections to the pack or at least knows the secret he can probably go. I bet I could talk to my uncle into letting you bring a date.” Eve said. “You should talk to Sandra, I think she might be able to help, she does get to meet a lot of people working at the library and volunteering at the town hall.” She continued.
With Eve’s suggestion in the back of my mind, I was even more excited for the festival and Eager to talk to my mom. Feeling hopeful and now determined to figure out if Danny has any knowledge of magic, I can’t help the smile growing on my face.
We step out of the silver car and make our way into the mall entrance near the Dillard’s. Eve’s stomach growled loudly and we both burst out in a fit of giggles.
“I guess our first stop will be for food,” Eve teased.
As we continued walking I quickly pulled out my phone to message my mother. She has connections like Eve reminded me so I am hopeful she can help me figure out my Danny dilemma.
Nova: Hey mom do you think you could do me a favor?
Sandra: sure dear, what’s up?
Nova: I was wondering if you know anything about the Pierce family? They moved a few months ago.
Sandra: I’ve seen Mrs. Pierce at the town hall meetings, actually She and I have swapped a few recipes and a couple spells.
Nova: spells? so Daniel’s mom is a witch?
Sandra: oh yes. Their family grimoire is just as old as ours. I helped her with a minor repair to its spine.
Nova: does Danny know of magic?
Sandra: I don’t see why not but I can ask Michelle when I see her next. You two should hang out actually he’s your age right
Nova: funny you say that
Sandra: what? Do you like him?
Nova: idk maybe, we’re at the mall now, I’ll see you after dinner. ❤️
Now blushing I shove my phone into my purse and pick up the pace.
“What did your mom say?” Evelyn inquired, noticing my face.
“Well Danny’s mom is a witch but my mom is going to double check if he knows anything about the big secret though.” Nova replied.
The girls make it into the line in front of DairyQueen and wait to order. Feeling giddy at the possibility of Danny knowing, I couldn’t stop smiling.
We get up to the front to order, “one heath dolly bar please.” I say.
“I’ll have a small Reese’s blizzard please.” Eve orders.
After finishing up our ice creams we begin browsing the stores. After over an hour we’ve probably walked the mall all the way through once fully. As we rounded the corner exiting one of the clothing stores I bumped into what felt like a brick wall of muscle.
“Oh hello Nova!” A silky but masculine voice says and I look up to see Daniel wearing a handsome grin.
“Goodness Danny, where on earth did you come from?” I stumbled out the words blushing.
“So this is the famous hunky linebacker you’ve been drooling over!” Evelyn squealed behind me, making me blush even deeper.
Laughing, Danny replies, “hunky huh?”
“Well I’d be lying if I said no,” I replied in a hushed voice, not looking at Danny.
The man next to Danny now spoke. “Good to see you again Nova.”
Looking up I see Evelyn’s big brother Nicholas.
“Hello Nick.” I say.
“Sup bro.” Evelyn nods at Nick.
“Oh I wasn’t aware you all were acquainted.” Danny said.
Evelyn and Nicholas look at each other then to Nova.
“Does Danny Know?” Evelyn asks Nick.
“I don’t see how he couldn’t, why?” Nick replied.
“Nova this is amazing news!” Evelyn squeals.
“What’s amazing news? What do I know?” A confused Danny demanded.
“Do you know what your mom is and what Nick is?” I asked.
“Oh, I’m assuming you mean I know the big secret, right?” Evelyn and I both Nodded. He continued, “Yea my mom’s a witch but I didn’t know Nick was anything, but I saw him at the pack house so I guess werewolf makes sense.” Danny said as he looked puzzled. “How do you know then?”
I grin at Danny and say, “My parents are witches.” He nods for me to continue. “They’re actually employed by the local Silvercrest werewolf pack and my parents help throw the annual harvest festival. Nick is my best friend Evelyn’s big brother and Nick here is the Delta and also the Alpha’s nephew.”
Eve jumps in, “That’s why she can’t go to homecoming with you since she’ll be at the festival with me and helping her parents out, but since you apparently know the secret would you like me to ask my uncle if you can come? You can be Nova’s date to the festival instead of homecoming!?” Eve asked Danny on my behalf.
Stunned by her sudden question, Danny takes a moment to realize what she said and replies. “I would absolutely love to!“ he says, staring directly at me, making me turn red. “But only if you want me as your date Nova.” He says.
I’m still a deer in the headlights by my best friend’s sudden suggestion but I shake myself out of it and beam up to him “I wouldn’t want it any other way.” I get lost in his eyes a moment before he begins to speak again.
“Awesome, I can't wait.” Danny said, returning my gaze before he turned back to Nick, “Also it’s super cool that I could make your acquaintance sir werewolf.” Danny added with a wink.
“Yea I guess so.” Nick replied, rolling his eyes with a light laugh.
“Are you girls done shopping? Anybody up for some grub?” Danny said.
“Actually we still have a couple more stops.” Evelyn chimed in.
“We could meet up after!” I suggest, and continue with, “What are you and Nick up to in Eugene anyways?”
Nick spoke first, “I was actually on an errand for my mom, she wanted me to pick up a couple of her orders. Danny was just leaving the pack house and offered to give me a ride.”
Danny followed suit, “my mom was having me drop off a couple spell scrolls and I bumped into Nick. I heard Nick was headed to the mall and I remembered you said you’d be shopping too so I thought I’d offer my assistance and hope that I could bump into you. Although I didn’t mean to literally.” He chuckled.
After exchanging numbers. I suggest again that we meet back up for dinner later.
“Alrighty boys, we need to get back to shopping and you need to finish your errands Nicholas.” Eve teased her brother.
I was thankful for bumping into Danny and no longer felt guilty for rejecting his homecoming offer earlier. The group parted ways and resumed their rounds.
