They were finally nearing Splintershot station. Kaira was strapped in, ready for the final transition to normal space, and Tarkus was completing his final checks. They seemed to go on for longer than normal, but finally he nodded. “Time to enter the space around Splintershot station,” he said. “For as short a time as possible.” Before Kaira could answer Tarkus sent the Glimmer exiting from jump space. Somehow she’d been expecting this to be a smooth transition, as they were close to a station. The crash from somewhere in the Glimmer’s engines and the blow to her left kidney were completely unexpected. She found herself gasping to draw in a breath for a few moments, before finally overriding her spasming stomach muscles and managing to drag some air down. There were no more crashes
