Chapter 03 MY mother called me as I was talking to Raven. My boyfriend was working overtime today. He'll be home later, and when he gets back, he'll pick me up, and I'll sleep over at his house. My mom lets me sleep over at my boyfriend's place because she trusts me, and Raven and I have been together for 5 years. "Why?" I asked my mom as I opened the door to my room. "Mel wants to talk to you," she said. "Okay," I replied, leaving the room. But my mom called me again before I left the house. "What is it?" I asked. "Do you have any money?" my mom asked me. I couldn't help but glance at my brother, who was lying comfortably on the floor watching TV. I just let out a deep sigh. I took some money out of my pocket. Fortunately, Raven had given me some money earlier. I gave my mom a few bucks. "Thank you," my mom said with a smile and then went to the kitchen. It seems we don't have anything to eat again all because my brother is so lazy. Once again, I just let out a deep sigh and then left the house. Probably, Mel didn't come inside the house because of my brother. How could she, when he's always just lying around? "Hey, bestie." "Why didn't you come in?" I asked her with a furrowed brow. "No need. I'll be leaving soon anyway. I just wanted to inform you that I've talked to my aunt. They still need one more person at her employer's house, but it still needs to be confirmed with the employer's child. Just wait for now," she said. "That's good. Okay, I'll wait. Where are you going?" I asked her seeing that she's all dressed up. "My boyfriend and I have a date. We're going to eat out," she said with excitement. "Wow," I said with a laugh. I'm happy for them. They've been together for two years even though they're always fighting. My friend can be difficult to deal with at times. "Okay, take care," I said to her. "Bye! He's waiting at the corner," she said and then left. I smiled as I headed back inside the house. I heard my mom coughing, so I went to the kitchen. Her cough sounded a bit worrying. "You've been coughing? Since when?" I asked my mother. "It's nothing," she said, waving her hand dismissively as she continued cooking. I thought it was for buying food, but maybe it's for her medicine. "Mom, did you get a check-up? Your cough sounds bad." I asked her again. "We don't have money. I'll just drink some citrus juice later," she said. I sighed deeply and shot an annoyed look at my brother. If only he had a job, Mom wouldn't have to work, and I wouldn't feel so lazy. Again, I sighed deeply and helped Mom. We're just having eggs and noodles for our meal today. When it was done, she called her grandchildren. She only called the grandchildren, but the couple came over too. I shook my head and left the kitchen to go to my room. Mom called me again. "I'll eat later," I said. I lose my appetite whenever I see my brother. I just watched videos on my cellphone. I'll eat later, together with my boyfriend. After an hour, Raven texted me. He said he's on his way home, so I should go to the bridge where we'll meet. I quickly got up from the bed and left my room. I told Mom that I would sleep over at Raven's. "Okay, dear," she said. My mother didn't object, and neither did my brother, who can't even support his own family. I happily went to the bridge where Raven and I would meet. I'm always happy to see him, even though we see each other often. When I got to the bridge, Raven wasn't there yet. The bridge isn't scary because it's well-lit and there are many people around. Besides, no one bothers me because I grew up on this place, and people knows who I am. After a few moments, my boyfriend arrived. I quickly hugged and kissed him. The young people hanging out there even cheered us on. "Time for some fun," one of the guys shouted. "Shut up!" Raven said, smiling as he put his arm around me. I smiled too, feeling so happy as we walked over to his house. "I brought food. Your favorite," he said after a while, lifting a plastic bag. I smiled at him and hugged him again. When we got to his house, his family was still awake, watching TV. "Hello," I greeted them and approached Raven's mom to pay my respects. His dad isn't around anymore because he cheated and left them. It's just his mom and two siblings living with him now. Raven is the eldest of three children. "Babe, come here," Raven called me from the kitchen to help prepare the food he bought. I asked Mama for permission. I also call her Mama because Raven and I have been together for a long time. She also accepts me as her son's partner. When I got to the kitchen, I hugged him from behind. I saw him smile at me, and then he kissed me on the head. "Let's eat. I'll be eating you later," he said mischievously in a low voice to ensure that his family wouldn't hear. "Silly," I said with a roll of my eyes. Even if he's not the best at it, what matters is that I love him. I sat down and we started eating together. The food we had today was really delicious. His mom cooked, but he still bought other viands and brought them home. It's nice to have a variety of dishes sometimes. After we finished eating, I washed the dishes. I want to be seen as a reliable person and not dependent on my boyfriend's family. We went upstairs. Their house is two stories. It's their own house because Raven's family is relatively well-off. His parents worked hard to buy that house. Unlike my parents, they have nothing because they struggled in life. Like me, my parents are uneducated. That's why my brother and I couldn't continue school. We had to work instead of focusing on our studies. If we didn't work, we would starve. I did go to school, but only until the first year of high school. My parents really couldn't afford to send us to school, and life was really difficult for us. When I started earning money, I didn't have the chance to go back to school. When we entered the room, Raven kissed me eagerly. I immediately kissed him back with a smile because I missed him so much.
