Chapter Seventeen Laura took a second to really listen to the quiet in the house. Something about knowing someone was there in an otherwise empty home made the place feel unfamiliar. She couldn’t be who she normally was behind closed doors. She inhaled, hearing the crackle of wood from the woodstove in the living room as she stood just inside the kitchen, where the kettle was steaming. Tyler stood in the living room with his back to her, looking out the window. He was older now, and she couldn’t get over how much Gabriel resembled him.
