Four straight days later, hidden inside a mediocre downtown hotel while the rest of the city continued breathing normally beyond these walls. I stood near the window with one hand tucked inside my pocket, absently scanning the crowded street below. People moved carelessly beneath the morning sun. Businessmen with coffee cups. Women dragging children across crosswalks. Tourists staring at maps like idiots waiting to get robbed. I hated how oblivious they all seemed. The glass reflected part of the hotel room behind me. Alice sat cross-legged near the foot of the bed flipping absentmindedly through television channels she clearly wasn't watching. Her presence lingered in the room even when she remained silent.
