“Where are we going?” Alice didn’t move from where she stood near the doorway of the reception lounge. The fading evening light spilled across the polished floor beneath her feet, catching the tension in her expression. I looked at her blankly. “Do I really have to spell it out to you,” I asked evenly, “or are you simply pretending to be stupid?” The irritation in my voice remained controlled. Barely.
