Chapter Two: The Man Behind the Shadows

841 Words
Rain continued to pour from the night sky, washing blood into the cracks of the bridge as if the city itself wanted to erase every trace of what had happened. Evelyn's pulse hammered against her ribs. The stranger's voice lingered in the cold air. "I've spent twelve years looking for a dead woman." She took an instinctive step backward, her fingers tightening around the leather portfolio beneath her coat. The silver key the driver had given her dug into her palm, its sharp edges reminding her that none of this was a nightmare. It was real. The fire consuming the limousine was real. The man who had sacrificed his life to save hers was gone. And somehow… Someone standing a few feet away knew she was Evelyn Carter. "Who are you?" she asked, forcing steel into her trembling voice. The man remained beneath the black umbrella, his features hidden by darkness. "I was hoping you'd ask something more interesting." His calmness unsettled her more than the bullets had. Most people feared death. This man behaved as though he had walked through it countless times. Police sirens echoed from the far end of the bridge. Searchlights swept across the smoke. They didn't have much time. "If you're here to kill me," Evelyn said quietly, "you're wasting precious minutes." A faint smile tugged at his lips. "If I wanted you dead, Miss Carter... you would have died in the limousine." Silence. She hated that she believed him. He hadn't drawn a weapon. He hadn't moved closer. He simply watched her with the patience of someone who already knew how this conversation would end. "You know my name." "I know much more than your name." The words sent a chill down her spine. "I know where you disappeared." "I know why you disappeared." "And I know why twelve years of hiding ended tonight." Evelyn swallowed. "No one knows that." "You keep telling yourself that." His voice held neither arrogance nor mockery. Only certainty. She had spent years mastering the art of disappearing. New passport. New career. New face to the world. Every trace of Evelyn Carter had been erased. Or so she believed. A police helicopter thundered overhead. Its searchlight skimmed across the bridge. The stranger stepped deeper into the shadows. "They'll be here in less than a minute." "I didn't ask for your help." "No." "You asked for the truth." She frowned. "I've been asking for the truth since I was twenty." "And tonight," he replied, "you stole the first piece of it." His gaze dropped to the leather portfolio. Instinctively, Evelyn shifted it behind her. "You know what's inside." "I know enough." "Then tell me." "I can't." "Or you won't?" He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked toward the burning wreckage where firefighters were now battling the flames. "They're searching for a body." "They won't find one." "They don't need to." She frowned. "They already have one." Confusion flashed across her face. "What are you talking about?" The stranger reached into his coat and tossed a small object toward her. She caught it. A phone. Not hers. Its screen is illuminated automatically. A news broadcast filled the display. The reporter stood beside the burning bridge. "...Authorities have confirmed the death of the unidentified female believed responsible for tonight's assassination attempt against billionaire Damian Voss..." The camera shifted. Evelyn's breath caught. A burned body had already been placed inside a black recovery bag. The reporter continued. "Sources claim the suspect carried forged identification under the name Evelyn Hayes." Her blood turned cold. Someone had prepared another corpse. Another identity. Another lie. Long before tonight. The stranger's voice broke the silence. "You're not running from tonight anymore." "You've been replaced." She stared at the screen. Every instinct screamed that this wasn't coincidence. It was preparation. Someone had planned every headline before the first bullet was fired. Someone powerful enough to manipulate evidence… Police… The media… Everything. "Who did this?" she whispered. "The same people who destroyed your family." "And Damian Voss?" The stranger's expression hardened for the first time. "That's the question that will decide whether you survive." Evelyn searched his hidden face. "Is he my enemy?" The man looked toward the city skyline where a single skyscraper towered above every other building. Its illuminated logo pierced the darkness. VOSS GLOBAL. "He doesn't know you're alive." "But the moment he finds out..." The stranger paused. "...every person hunting you will become twice as dangerous." A deafening explosion echoed from the opposite side of the bridge. Gunfire erupted. The stranger's head snapped toward the sound. "They found us." Black SUVs burst through the police barricades. Armed men flooded onto the bridge. Their rifles searched the darkness. The stranger grabbed Evelyn's wrist. "For the next ten seconds," he said calmly, "your life belongs to me." Before she could protest, he pulled her over the bridge's safety rail. Her eyes widened. "What are you doing?" He looked directly into her eyes for the first time. "They'll never think to look beneath the bridge." Then— They jumped.
