Chapter Nine The dreams began as full raging nightmares. Perhaps she was storing up her fear by day to unleash it when the sky fell dark. Three nights in a row she woke, plagued with such horrifying sensations, no pictures in her mind, just sensations. She’d gasp in panic loud enough to wake Fritz. Finding herself crawling into his arms for comfort she’d lie half awake until dawn. “You can’t keep doing this,” Fritz announced to her that third morning before he left their room. He was angry and agitated with her, but he wouldn’t share his thoughts. At the noon meal he did little more than scowl and tell her that Paulina’s roast was not done enough—which he made her fault.
