Chapter 6

I sipped my whiskey, the burn settling deep in her chest as I watched Charlotte banter with the bartender. The dim lighting of the upscale lounge cast a golden glow over the sleek leather booths and polished mahogany bar, creating an atmosphere both intimate and dangerously alluring. This was the kind of place where powerful men made deals, where whispered promises were exchanged over clinking glasses, and where the night could change the course of a life. Charlotte turned back to her, smirking. "You seem tense. Still thinking about the past? Or are you finally ready to live in the present?" I exhaled, swirling the amber liquid in my glass. "I think I'm somewhere in between." Before Charlotte could respond, a shift in the room's energy sent a chill down my spine. It wasn’t fear—it was awareness. A presence had entered the lounge, one that commanded attention without demanding it. I turned my head just slightly and caught sight of him. Enrique Salazar. He was tall, devastatingly handsome, with an aura that spoke of power and wealth. His tailored charcoal suit molded to his broad frame, exuding authority and precision. Dark, intelligent eyes scanned the room with an assessing gaze, and when they landed on me, a slow smirk played at the corners of his lips. Charlotte let out a soft chuckle. "Well, well. Looks like you’ve caught the attention of one of the most unattainable men in this city." I arched a brow. "Unattainable? Or uninterested?" "Oh, he's interested," Charlotte murmured, tilting her glass toward Enrique. "And he doesn’t do casual. If he’s looking at you like that, you should be very, very intrigued." Before I could analyze what that meant, Enrique moved with deliberate confidence toward us. The scent of expensive cologne and something uniquely masculine enveloped my senses as he stopped just close enough to invade my space without making it obvious. "Ladies," his voice was rich, smooth as aged whiskey. "Charlotte, always a pleasure. And you must be Camille Rivera." The way he said my name—slow, deliberate—sent an unexpected shiver through me. I lifted my chin, meeting his gaze head-on. "You say that like you already know me." His smirk deepened. "I do my research. And given our companies are about to enter a rather lucrative partnership, it’s in my best interest to know the key players." Charlotte clinked her glass against mine, amused. "You’re the key player now, love." I kept my expression neutral, even as a warmth I hadn’t felt in a long time spread through me. "I’d argue that knowledge works both ways, Mr. Salazar. Should I be doing my own research on you?" Enrique leaned in just a fraction, his voice dropping to something almost intimate. "I’d rather you get to know me firsthand. Research can only tell you so much." A thrill danced up my spine at the unspoken challenge. I wasn’t naive—Enrique was the kind of man who played for keeps, who didn’t waste his time on trivial pursuits. He exuded dominance, the kind of quiet control that both warned and enticed. "Then let’s make this partnership interesting," I murmured, tilting my glass toward his. "I’m not one to shy away from learning something new." He clinked his glass against mine, the flicker in his eyes revealing something dark, something intriguing. "Neither am I." Charlotte chuckled. "Oh, this is going to be fun." The rest of the night unfolded with an easy rhythm—conversation flowed, the tension between Enrique and I building in a way that neither acknowledged but both were keenly aware of. Every glance, every brush of his fingertips as he passed me a drink, sent my pulse racing. It had been a long time since I felt this kind of attraction. A dangerous kind. The kind that could consume me if I let it. As the evening wound down, Enrique turned to me, his gaze lingering. "Let me take you to dinner. Business, of course." Camille I knew better. This was anything but business. But I found myself nodding anyway. "Why not? After all, research is important." His smirk was slow, knowing. "Indeed it is." As I walked out of the lounge that night, I realized something I hadn’t in a long time—I felt alive. And for the first time since my world had crumbled, I was ready to play the game.
