New ties

The golden light of the afternoon sun spilled across the neatly trimmed lawn as the sweet scent of grilled meat filled the air. A soft hum of chatter and laughter echoed through the Nortons' backyard as the families gathered around the barbecue grill. The Clarksons had returned from church as promised, and a proper introduction was well underway. Jayda Norton stood by the grill, flipping barbecues while chatting with Linah Clarkson, who leaned comfortably on the wooden fence dividing their yards. “I’m a nurse at Sanstone General Hospital ,” Mrs. Clarkson said proudly. “Been working there for almost ten years now.” Jayda smiled. “That’s wonderful. I work from home mostly—freelancing. I do writing and a bit of design on the side.” Her husband, Andrew Norton, joined them with two plates in hand. “And I work at Fairwood Furniture. Been there about five years now.” “Sounds like you both keep busy,” Linah said. “My husband—he’s the CEO of Sanstone's biggest manufacturing factory. Hardly home, but he provides well.” Jayda nodded politely, but her curiosity about the man behind the title flickered silently. Meanwhile, the girls had stepped aside from the adults’ conversation. The Clarkson daughter extended a hand. “I’m Stacy,” she said. Mia grinned and shook her hand. “Mia Norton. Nice to meet you.” “Cool backyard,” Stacy added, glancing around. “We can hang out here sometimes.” “I’d like that,” Mia replied. The sun dipped lower, the sky painted in soft purples and oranges. As conversation continued, Jayda brought up something that had been bothering her. “We still haven’t enrolled Mia into a new school,” she admitted. “She had a really rough time at her previous school—some bullying issues. She hated going.” “Oh dear,” Linah said, her face softening. “That’s terrible. Stacy goes to Sanstone Private High School. It’s a great school—safe, disciplined, and with small classes. Maybe Mia should join her there.” Andrew looked at Jayda. “That might not be a bad idea.” Jayda smiled with relief. “That would mean she won’t feel so alone on her first day. And having Stacy there could really help her adjust.” Stacy turned to Mia excitedly. “You should totally come! We can walk home together every day.” Mia's eyes lit up. “Yes, please! I’d love that.” The rest of the evening passed with laughter, warm food, and talk of school, friends and teachers. The families bonded easily, unaware of the dark web hidden beneath the surface of their seemingly peaceful neighborhood. By Monday morning, the Nortons were up early. Papers in hand, they arrived at Sanstone Private High School. The registration process went smoothly, thanks to Mrs. Clarkson’s earlier call to the school administrator. As Mia stood in front of the school gate with Jayda, she felt something she hadn’t felt in a long time—hope. With Stacy by her side and a fresh start ahead, she had no idea that behind the clean walls and tidy classrooms of Sanstone High lay secrets far more dangerous than the bullies she left behind. Jayda held her hand and asked her if she liked her new school. Mia smiled brightly and nodded. “Okay then, let’s go home. You have a big day ahead tomorrow. We also need to stop by the book shop for some new books for school tomorrow.” “And maybe some dresses.” Mia replied. When they got home, Jayda excitedly recounted everything to her husband during dinner. Tuesday morning arrived quicker than expected. Jayda helped Mia get dressed in her new school uniform, brushing her daughter’s hair with extra care. There was a hopeful buzz in the air—a fresh start, a new school, and perhaps, no more bullies. “Ready?” Jayda asked, handing her a neatly packed lunch. “As ready as I’ll ever be,” Mia smiled nervously. Stacy Clarkson met Mia outside. Together, the girls walked to Sanstone Private High School. The school building looked new and polished, with neatly trimmed hedges and glass doors that shimmered under the morning sun. When they entered the classroom, Stacy guided Mia to the front where the teacher, Miss Zara, stood with a gentle smile. "Good morning, class. We have a new student joining us today," she said, motioning to Mia. "Everyone, this is Mia Norton. She just moved to Sanstone and will be part of our class from now on." Mia, a bright and beautiful young woman with a sharp mind and a quick wit, stood confidently before the class. Her slender figure and pretty features made her stand out, but it was her intelligence and passion for learning that truly set her apart. With a cheerful demeanor and a cunning streak, she navigated the introduction with ease. The students stared at her with admiration in their eyes. A few polite murmurs of "hi" echoed from the desks, and Mia offered a small wave. As her eyes scanned the room, they suddenly stopped.
