Introduction of Characters

These are the seven women and their families whose account of that fateful day follows:

Cara Edens is an undergraduate student studying veterinary technology and business administration. She has an obsessive-compulsive disorder with cleanliness and germs, and sometimes suffers anxiety attacks about going out in public. She lives in Joplin with her boyfriend Stephen and their two cats. Her parents, sister, and nephew all live close by.

Carmen Borup is a stay-at-home mom with several children in college and several still at home. She loves music and helps out with the high school band whenever she can. Her husband is the cook of the family. He takes great care to prepare gluten-free meals for Carmen, who has Celiac disease.

Kayla McMinn lives with her fiance and two sons in Joplin. She stays home to care for them and her mother-in-law. She enjoys cooking and looks forward to Sunday dinners with her father.

Meg Scaggs is an artist who lives with her husband Sam, their dog, and three small children in Joplin. She loves spending time in her garden, and jogging. She recently retired from Spiva, a community art program. She documents their daily lives through photography, taking pictures on her phone and camera whenever she can.

Nellie Mitchell is an elementary school teacher who lives in Joplin with her husband. They both enjoy bike riding, and Nellie spends every Sunday in Webb City working on her photography. She's a crafty person who takes pride in her ability to create something with her own two hands.

Penny and Pierre Jason have been married more than sixteen years. They have a quiet life with their dog Bella. Penny's children are all grown, and she frequently visits with her grandchildren who live nearby. Pierre has one daughter from a previous marriage who lives with them.

Piper Divine is a single parent who survived cervical cancer. She's also a full-time student and full-time employee. Her mom lives close by and helps her with her ten-year-old son whenever she can.
