The Rescue

Everything moved too fast. Elena barely had time to think as they dragged her through a series of narrow hallways, her feet stumbling against the rough floor. “Move,” one of them snapped, tightening his grip on her arm. Pain shot through her wrist. She bit back a cry. Stay focused. Stay aware. --- They pushed her through a metal door and into the cold night air. For a split second— everything felt too open. Too exposed. A warehouse yard stretched out ahead, dimly lit by flickering lights. Cars idled nearby. Engines running. Ready. Her heart slammed. If they got her into one of those— she was gone. --- “Get her in the car,” one of them ordered. Hands shoved her forward. Elena stumbled— then twisted suddenly, using all her strength to yank her arm free for half a second. “Let go of me!” A mistake. One of them struck her hard across the side, knocking the air from her lungs. She collapsed to her knees, gasping. “Enough,” another voice snapped. “We don’t damage the leverage.” Leverage. The word echoed in her head. Her vision blurred slightly as she tried to push herself up— And then— everything stopped. --- Gunfire. Sharp. Precise. Deadly. One of the men near her dropped instantly. Elena froze. Her heart skipped— then slammed back to life. She knew that sound. --- Chaos erupted. Shouting. More gunshots. Bodies moving fast. Falling faster. The men around her scrambled, weapons raised, trying to respond— But they were already too late. --- He was already there. --- Alessandro moved through the chaos like a force of nature. Cold. Controlled. Unstoppable. Every movement calculated. Every shot precise. No hesitation. No mercy. Because this— this wasn’t just a fight. This was war. And he was ending it. --- “Elena!” Her name cut through the noise. She turned— And saw him. Relief hit so hard it almost knocked her over. He was here. He actually found her. --- “Down!” he shouted. She dropped instantly, instincts taking over as more shots rang out above her. Alessandro reached her in seconds, dropping to her side, his hands immediately on her—checking, scanning, making sure she was still in one piece. “You’re hurt?” he demanded. “I’m okay,” she managed, her voice shaking. “I’m okay.” His jaw tightened. But he didn’t stop touching her. Like he needed to be sure. Like he wouldn’t believe it otherwise. --- “We need to move!” one of his men shouted. Alessandro didn’t look away from her. “Can you stand?” She nodded. “Yes.” He helped her up instantly, one arm wrapping around her, pulling her close— Too close. Like he wasn’t letting her go again. --- They started moving toward the cars— And then— a shot rang out. Closer. Too close. Elena gasped as Alessandro turned sharply, pulling her behind him just as a bullet tore through the air where she had been standing. His body blocked hers completely. Shielding her. Protecting her. Always. --- “Stay behind me,” he said, his voice low and lethal. She didn’t argue. Didn’t move. --- The last of the attackers fell quickly after that. Silence followed. Heavy. Broken only by Elena’s uneven breathing. --- “It’s clear,” one of his men confirmed. Alessandro didn’t respond immediately. His focus was still on her. Only her. His hands came up again, brushing over her arms, her face—checking for injuries she didn’t even realize she had. “You’re safe,” he said. But it sounded like he was convincing himself. Not her. --- “I told you,” she said softly, her voice still unsteady. “You’d find me.” His gaze snapped to hers. Something raw flashed in his eyes. “You shouldn’t have been taken,” he said. The words were sharp. Angry. But not at her. At himself. --- “I’m here now,” she said. A simple truth. But it hit something deeper. Because for a moment— he didn’t respond. Didn’t move. Just looked at her. Like he
