Chapter Six

"No!" "No?" He questions. My eyes are wide and I'm panicking. But when I hear the stool scrap against the floor, I lose my mind. "Rei-" I bite my tongue before I can even finish and look over my shoulder. "Kira," Maddie calls out. "Everything okay?" I nod, giving her a convincing smile and walk out of the apartment before she can protest. In the hall, I stand against the wall, staring at the number engraved on the door. "Kira," I hear him say. He sounds annoyed and tired. "I don't want this any more than you-" I barely get the chance to reply when he hangs up. And just like that, I feel -actually, I know that we're doomed. I should've never tried to keep this from her. "f**k!" I scream while gripping the phone in my hand. The door opens and Maddie is leaned against the threshold, her face contorted with worry. "Is everything okay?" She asks, crossing her arms. She frowns. "Who was that?" I gulp, "Yeah. . ." My attention is grasped when the elevator chimes letting out a built man in formal wear. He looks too expensive for this place with his clean white shirt and navy slacks. My knees suddenly feel weak when I catch the determination in his dark eyes. His sharp jaw clenches as he walks, looking straight at me. I press up against the wall giving him space to pass but he doesn't, instead, he stands so close to me with a gut wrenching smile. He looks older up close, which makes me feel small beside him. My eyes widen as realisation strikes and I look at Maddie. Her eyes are wide too, with shock and she shifts her gaze to me. Then he stretches his hand to Maddie andd in the smoothest voice he says,"I don't believe we've met. I'm Randall." I roll my eyes, of course. She looks at him, then back at me in question. I merely shrug, feeling a little panic. Here we go again. "Madilyn." She replies firmly shaking his hand. "You are . . .?" "Kira's fiance." That alone is enough for me to choke on my own saliva. I cough and pat my chest, praying that I heard wrong. Fiance? What the hell? "Ex-cuse me?" I speaks in between coughs. I look at my sister and her eyes are wider than saucers. "Fiance." She nods glancing between me and the man. "Oh don't be like that sweetheart." He looks at Maddie. "She didn't tell you?" He says unapologetically. Sweetheart? Tell her what? "Tell me what?" Maddie looks at me, her lips curving as she stares at him curiously. And just when I think he'll stop talking nonsense and start making sense, I'm left wishing for the ground to open up and swallow me. Unexpectedly, I feel his calloused hand grip my waist and me flash against his tall frame. "We're pregnant." Fuck. My. Life. We? Who's we? I'm too embarassed to look at Maddie, I'm afraid of what I'll see, I'm afraid of what she'll say. I keep my head down, my head swarming with questions and anger. How did he know? Who the does he think he is? Your fiance, I think to myself. God, who's relationship did I wreck now? A part of me wants to see Maddie's face, her reaction but I'm also ashamed. "Pregnant?" She finally speaks up. It's enough for me to lift my head up and see her standing coyly against the threshold. Randall lets me go and grips my hand instead. "Well, I'd love to stay and chat," he tells her. "But wedding to plan and parents to meet, you know?" I frown, looking at him, parents to meet? Then I remember what Reilly had said when he called. That would explain why Randall looks a lot like him. My family wants to meet you. Maddie's reply is delayed as she nods, "Yeah, yeah. For sure. I'll see you when you get back." She says. "Call me!" But what if my deduction is wrong, I wonder. Then I'll just run as soon as we get downstairs. I feel relief when I see Reilly carelessly leaning against a grey Renault Clio with his arms crossed. He looks like he's posing for one of his photoshoots, with his casual, laidback attire. At least my window is facing an alleyway, otherwise I'd be roadkill right now. I find myself smiling but quickly mask it with a frown, trying to convey my anger and surprise, but no one stands around for too long, both men get into the car. I contemplate getting in. I'm not ready for whatever this is, this ambush. I still have to digest what just happened. Why did his brother introduce himself as my fiance? Was that just for casualty? Most likely. The forced grin on his face said it all. I shrug it off and take a deep breath before entering the car. It's a long way to wherever we're going and at some point I began wondering whether I'd made the right choice riding along with men I hardly know. And at one point I'm caught up in their conversation. "This is stupid." I hear Reilly speak up, looking at his brother. "What?" Randall raises an amused eyebrow. "Cleaning up your mess?" "Going after Michael." Reilly says. "Don't you get tired?" My eyes shift between the two as they speak, and I find myself leaning closer. Randall rubs a finger under his lip,"I just want what's rightfully mine." "Fiona is not going to take this well." Reilly chuckles. My heart jumps into my throat when I catch Randall's eyes in the rear view mirror. "She chose Michael." Reilly then looks to his brother, disbelief glazing his eyes. A few minutes pass and no one speaks again, so I lay back. And after some turns on empty roads he finally stops in front of a contemporary mansion. He completes a facial recognition and we're in. I barely get anytime to explore the home as I feel my curiosity and frustration grow. I need to get this over and done with. I walk with determination and purpose but when I see the Michael Michaelson at his desk in nothing more than his polished signature suit. Black, like always. "Making me interim CEO will put the board at ease." Are Randall's first words to his father as he stands in front of him with his hands in his pocket. My pulse skips a beat and I cannot imagine talking to my father like that. Michael looks past his son and strides towards me. He smiles, "Kira, we've heard so much about you." I gulp and glance at Reilly. All good things I hope. After all, there is no one else I'm acquainted with more than him. Unless. Unless Michael has met Maddie. But I doubt that, she would've said something. But then again. . . "My son tells me you're pregnant," Michael says calmly. Then he urges me to the sofa. "Come, sit sit." Again, I look at Reilly who avoids my gaze. Michael sits down with me, making sure to keep some distance between us. "I hope you know everything we do from now onwards is in yours and the baby's best interest." He says earnestly. I frown, confused,"What do you mean?" "I believe you've met Randall," he points to him. Unfortunately, I roll my eyes and then respectfully nod afterwards. "We can't have people out there knowing that my youngest proposed to one sister and knocked up the other," he says. Right. I'm too afraid to do anything else but listen intently and nod. "For everyone's sake, Kira you're going to marry Randall." * * * * It's been a long time, without you my friends, BUT I am so sorry for the delay and I hope you enjoyed the chapter. Don't be a ghost leave a comment, or something. I'd greatly appreciate the love and support. Thank you
