Chapter 8
“Where is she?” Cliff Chapman is almost hysterical when he arrives in the emergency room. At two o’clock in the morning, he woke up to a phone call that told him that Laura has been in a car accident. He arrives in the village hospital with Charles, using a private chopper, not wanting to waste time.
The doctor looks at him grimly, not uttering a word. Behind him, he sees Adelaide crying inconsolably, and immediately, he knows the answer.
The world comes crashing down on him as he feels his knees weaken, barely able to support to his weight. Arms go around him to prevent him from collapsing on the floor.
“Cliff…” Charles murmurs as he supports his father-in-law's weight on his arms. “You have to be strong.”
“No! No! No!” Cliff crie
