JUST A LITTLE MORE

CHELSIE The black veins that spread from his arm to his chest started disappearing as if it was retreating. I could barely breathe. It’s like my throat is being smothered from the inside out, but I stood still until I saw the black veins from the wolfsbane poisoning had disappeared entirely. “Thank Goodness,” I muttered and tried catching my breath. Soon enough, the sound of his breathing became steadier in my hearing. I managed to save him, and I should be leaving by now before someone comes in again, but I couldn’t move my body at all. Usually, the pain would fade after I finished healing them, but it’s not getting any better. I found myself gripping the edge of the bed, gasping for air. This was my clear reminder that I could never abuse this ability, or I would die absorbing their pain. Before I could even recover, I was suddenly yanked and found myself beneath Rain in a snap. His eyes are still dim, but I can see the familiar anger in them. I was just about to speak when his hand suddenly snaked around my neck, strangling me without much hesitation. “Alpha, wait.” I resisted, but to no avail. He growled at me, eyes changing to his wolf’s in anger and clear intent to kill me. “What were you doing earlier? Don’t tell me you saw this as an opportunity to kill me?” I couldn’t respond. I understand that there will never be an ounce of trust he would give me, but I also couldn’t help but feel bitter about it. He knew me before everything fell apart. He knew that I couldn’t do it, but he still accused me with so much certainty. Above all, I saved his life, still feel unimaginable pain from it, and this is what I get. No matter what I do, I will never be able to erase my parents’ sin from me. I’m a child of murderers. The very reason this pack fell apart. His hold on my neck tightened, claws starting to dig into my skin. Still, I didn’t utter any explanation. What is the use, anyway? They already judged me because of my origin. He would never believe that I sneaked in here to heal him. So, instead, I closed my eyes and let him do whatever he wanted. If he were really going to kill me, then maybe that’s just it for me. Too bad, I thought I could escape this place… I heard Rain scoff, “What, do you think I’d feel pity for your act? You won’t be able to manipulate me, Chelsie. Answer. The. Damn. Question.” He emphasized every word, and every time, his hold only tightened. I instinctively gasped for air. “I… would never… try to hurt you,” I answered my truth, but he only growled at me. My vision already blurred out, but I heard panicked voices from the door. “Alpha? Please calm down and unhand that omega.” One of the doctors approached us with caution. Rain clicked his tongue and finally let me go, removing himself from on top of me. I gasped for air and choked on air, doing so, causing more pain than I already had. “You’ve completely healed. How is that possible?” She muttered in both surprise and relief. I pushed myself to get up, knees still trembling, and my breathing was still labored, but I kept my head low. I was itching to get away from the scene, but knew I would look more suspicious if I ran away. “The Alpha’s body must have recovered on its own. Why are you even questioning it like you weren’t happy seeing him recovered?” The other doctor dismissed her, but didn’t sound convinced by his own words. They knew well that someone didn’t easily recover like that, even for an alpha. But since they couldn’t explain it with logic, they will think it was just a miracle or something. “How long was I out?” Rain asked. I could feel him still glaring at me, but I didn’t dare meet his gaze. The pain I took from his wolfsbane poisoning had already passed, but my neck is now bruised and wounded from his attack. I could heal myself. It doubles the pain but heals me nonetheless, but they would suspect if they saw it gone in a few days. “About three hours, alpha. We were very worried about you. We were supposed to find a pack that could lend us the antidote.” “I’m fine now.” He assured before shooting me with daggered glares once again, “And do me a favor, get that woman out of my sight.” The first doctor quickly pulled me away from the room. I thought she would just let me go, but instead, she pulled me to the woods. “What were you doing in there?” she asked after making sure that no one was around. My mind blanked out for a good second, but I was able to spout some excuse. “I didn’t mean to anger Alpha Rain. I just wanted to check if he was okay.” I said and silently prayed that she would buy my excuse. “When you entered the room, was he already conscious?” I slowly shook my head. “Not yet, doctor. He was still unconscious when I approached him, but he suddenly woke up before I could even get a good look at him.” I answered, knowing that she was curious about how Alpha Rain quickly recovered. She heaved a sigh. “You’re useless. Just leave, and don’t ever do that again. Why would you even think for a second that the Alpha wanted you to check on him, or see your face when he wakes up? You’re digging your own grave. Be thankful we decided to check on him first before we left.” I lowered my head, “It’ll never happen again. Thank you for helping me, doctor.” I went back to my room, limping and still in pain. My knees buckled, and I ended up collapsing on my knees before I could even reach the pile of old fabrics I’m still not done stitching together, as I only sneak threads whenever I can. “Stop crying, Chelsie. You brought this to yourself.” I wiped the tears trickling down my cheek. I crawled my way to my bed and curled myself to safety. “Just a little more wait, and you can leave this place. Just a little more…” My vision blurred out, and I just closed my eyes and didn’t fight it. Once again, I wish the time would pass faster.
