Amos POV
When Greg told me that the human had arrived, I sent James down there to get her. He mind-linked me as he brought her to me. Carla was right, there is something about this girl. She’s constantly looking over her shoulder and though I have her laughing a bit, she’s really on edge.”
She will need to tell me the truth about what is going on. I need to know how much of a risk there is to taking her into our pack. I replied and closed the link.
I heard a knock on my office door. James opens it and brings the young girl in.
“Good evening, I am Amos Rainwater the Al…er Leader of this town. What is your name?” I asked her, watching her closely hoping she didn’t catch my slip up.
“My name is Jade Starr, it’s very nice to meet you. Thank you so much for letting me come here.” I am struck by how beautiful Jade is. She is very petite and has a pixie look to her, with short black hair and bright hazel eyes. If I take her in, I’m going to have a hard time keeping the unmated wolves away from her.
“Welcome to Fire Moon. I have some questions before I can offer you sanctuary. My town relies on discretion, and I need to know exactly what trouble you are in and how much risk it poses to our lives here. I appreciate full honesty from you, OK?”
“Yes Mr. Rainwater. There really isn’t much to tell. May I have a seat, please?”
“Of course.” I gestured for her and James to sit on the chairs in front of my desk. Jade takes a deep breath.
“My stepbrother assaulted me and got me pregnant. He is a dangerous man. He’s a lawyer and knows how to take care of things, if you know what I mean. I didn’t want him to hurt me or my child, and so I left.” Jade says.
I look at James, whose face is tight. He’s thinking what I am…what kind of monster would hurt a young girl like this?
“Was this the first time he hurt you?” I asked her.
Jade shakes her head. “No, the second. David’s always been obsessed with me. I know it sounds paranoid, but I feel like he’s been watching me for years. After the first time, he told me not to bother dating anyone because he would always be watching me. I stayed away from him as much as I could. But I would still see him parked in a car after I’d gotten out of school, off work at my friends' homes, trying not to be obvious. If there were dinners at the house he would ask these questions about what was going on in my life. I guess to show me in secret he was watching me. He has taken pictures of me through the years too.”
What Jade was telling me filled me with dread. A man with this kind of obsession isn’t good and I see now Fire Moon may be the only hope Jade has to stay ahead of him. “What is his name?”
“David Bradshaw.” She answers, and I wrote the name down so I could do some research on him.
“Does anyone else know about him?”
“I tried to tell my mother the first time it happened, but she wouldn’t listen to me. My best friend Katie knows everything. She’s the one who got the car put in her name so the information wouldn’t show up on my driver's report. David has resources like no one I know.” I was beginning to see that.
“I need to know Katie’s last name and if she knows that you came here.” I told her.
“Katie’s last name is Sanders and the last time I talked to her I was in St. Louis. She told me not to call her back as my mother had already been to her and didn’t want to alert whoever David hired to find me to where I was.” Jade tells me.
“Your mother didn’t call the police?!” James exclaims, startling Jade.
“What, and risk having her fake country club friends find out this secret?? No, she smacked me and told me to keep my mouth shut and get over it!” Jade starts to sob. “I am begging you both, if you have to turn me away fine but please don’t tell my mother or David I was here.” She bends over in the chair to deep breathe and get control of herself.
James and I looked at each other.
James, we need to bring Katie here. If that f*cker is tracking her to get to Jade, she’s in danger too. Better to get her here before he gets information so we can stay ahead of him. I say through the mind link.
Good call. Can I bring the mother here too, so we can beat the s*it out of her?! What mother would do this to their child?!
One thing at a time, James. Let’s get Jade to a room tonight, then we can start finding out what this guy is capable of.
“Jade look at me.” I commanded gently. She looks up, tears still dripping from her eyes. “We need to do some investigating of our own to find out just how dangerous David is. He isn’t the only one with resources. In the meantime, I am going to have you stay here in the pa…house. James will show you to a room. Tomorrow morning, I will send you over to our midwife, Anita Lake.”
Jade looked up and I saw relief in her beautiful face. “Thank you so much Mr. Rainwater. You’ll never know what this means to me and how much I appreciate your kindness.”
“Please, call me Amos.” I smiled at her. James and Jade and leave the office. I sit back in my seat, shaken to my core by what has occurred.
It's a shame she isn't our mate. Achak said, disappointment in his voice. Our mate will come Achak. Right now we just need to try and keep this woman safe. I reply.
Carla made the right call when she found Jade in Kansas. I made a phone call and minutes later, I had David Bradshaw’s information in an email. I stared at this pr*ck’s smug face, fighting an urge to get a flight to Kentucky right now and kill him myself. His smile reeked of an entitled man who has always had what he wanted and never had to answer for anything he's done.
Keep smiling you piece of s**t. You may be able to manipulate Jade's mother, your father, and you think you have human law on your side...but you don't know me and what I'm capable of.
