Chapter 11.

"What of Dante?" "He's stable." I sighed, taking off the net off my head. "I'll see him then." Enzo tried to walk past me. "No." I stopped him instantly. "You can't. Not now." I told him. "And why is that? You said he was stable. Are you playing games right now?" Enzo, so hot tempered that he just spoke anyhow, one which got me frustrated every single time. "Can you just take a chill Enzo?" I blurted out. "For God's sake I've been on Dante for 8 good hours and I tell you something and you can't just listen." I snapped at him. "I said he's stable. Give him a day before you can go in. Thankfully the bullet only grazed his heart, and I was able to remove it but he would be unconscious for the time being." One could feel how lethargic my tone was. Enzo stared at me with a hard gaze for seconds, before running a hand through his hair. "f**k!" He cursed. "How long would he be unconscious for?" Enzo asked me. "Let's give him some hours to a day and see how he responds." I answered Enzo. "Alright." Enzo sniffed before picking out his phone. "Once he's up, we're moving." Enzo gave me one last stare before he turned away. "Enzo." I called him from behind. "The nurse...you said you were going to let her go. The surgery is successful she needs to go now." I spoke, even if Enzo didn't even turn to me. "Has Dante woken up yet?" Enzo asked me. "Well, no but..." "Then she stays." Enzo cut me off. "You promised to let her go." My gaze now hardened, seeing as Enzo went back on his words. "Enzo." He didn't bother to answer me again, and left. "Argh!" I ran a hand through my hair as my breathing quickened. God, what mess was I in! What did I expect from a f*****g mafia gang. “Sarah?” I entered back to the room where we had surgery on Dante. “Sarah?” I called for the nurse, Marcel found to assist me for the surgery, but I couldn’t find her. “Sarah?” I called again and shifted the curtain in the room, to see her cramped behind it. “Hey,” My tone went weak, seeing Sarah’s head in between her thighs. “I know just how scared you must be, and I know this isn’t right and I am so sorry because this is my fault. I… I asked for someone to assist because I couldn’t perform the surgery alone but trust me, I made a deal with them to make sure that after the surgery was successful they would let you go but I…” A tear ran down my eye. “It’s all my fault. I’m so sorry.” I squatted down close to Sarah. “Did they also kidnap you?” Sarah finally spoke words to me. “Yes.” I nodded my head. “It’s been months,” I let out a dry chuckle. “Oh my God. I’m so sorry.” Sarah now rose her head properly, and held my hands with hers. “Is there no way to escape?” She asked me. “Trust me, I’ve tired.” I scoffed. “But you don’t worry. I will make sure you get out of here, no matter what.” I didn’t know the confidence I had, but I knew I was responsible for Sarah. “And what about you?” Sarah nodded her head. “Don’t worry about me Sarah…” my lips turned sour. “My fate,” My gaze traveled away from Sarah, to where Dante laid on the bed unconscious. “Rests in his hands.” I didn’t know when a tear dropped down my cheek again, until I felt it cold. I stood up and went beside Dante’s bed, staring at his unconscious frame. His dark eyebrows seemed even fuller than how I knew them to be, his face spotless as ever, for if not the wound on his chest, one would deny him just being shot. I stared at the man in front of me, a part of me wishing him dead and wanting to kill him with my own bare hands. Fucking hell, I can’t believe that I saved him. If he didn’t take me that day, I wouldn’t be in such a situation. Probably, if he dies, everything would actually go back to being normal. But when I swore the oath to do no harm, I intended to keep it. “Why didn’t you just…you know stop his heart?” I felt Sarah behind me. “Maybe you’ll be free.” Sarah added. “Funny enough Sarah, this man took the bullet that was meant for me.” An unbelievable scoff escaped my lips. “If it wasn’t for him, I’d definitely be dead.” I told Sarah. “What the hell was he even thinking? I thought Mafia leaders used their brain but it seems this one, this one is unpredictable.” My gaze became perplexed, wondering what was going on in Dante’s head for him to risk his life for me and if I wasn’t a doctor, I can bet he would have died. Just what are you scheming Dante? “And if it wasn’t for him, you wouldn’t even have a bullet sent to you in the first place.” Sarah reminded me. “You’re right.” My gaze still remained perplexed, staring at the man in front of me who put me in all this mess. “But at this point, I think I would rather choose Dante over this heartless one they call Enzo.” I told Sarah. “Who? The guy with the long tattoos?” Sarah asks me, and I nodded. “Why? Aren’t they all the same? Or worse?” Sarah said. “Dante might have been ruthless and scary, but one thing I knew for sure was that he is a man of his words and never went back on them.” I told Sarah. “So he is better than them?” Sarah asked me. “I don’t know yet. I still don’t know what kind of a man he is.”
