Three days earlier.
“Enzo.” Dante’s gaze remained stiff on the window he faced. His thoughts lost in oblivion, as he prepared for what was to come.
“Yes Dante .” Enzo, his right hand man answered from the other side of the phone.
“There’s a war coming.” Dante spoke out.
“And you’ve won it already.” Enzo propagated.
“No, Enzo. This might be different.” Dante’s eyes drafted to glance at his glass of whiskey on his table.
“You have the upper hand in whole cartel, and everyone knows it’s you who run it.” Enzo reminded him.
“But if I can’t make Elena stay by my side it won’t be for much longer.” Dante eventually spoke what bothered him, whereas the line went silent for a second.
“And what makes her so special? Why does it have to her who determines if we win the war or not? Any other person can fit into that role. It’s just for what your father would approve and wants.” Enzo made his comment.
“She has compassion Enzo. At least her humanity is still intact.” Dante began. “I need someone to pull me off the edge when this war come. There should always be a boundary Enzo, and I need someone who can clearly see it and not be scared to let me know. We have all been in this. We were born into it and let’s not kid ourselves Enzo, our humanity is gone. Now, I only need someone from preventing me going off that edge, and Elena…” Dante stopped his words for a brief second. “She can do that. Plus, tend to all your wounds.” He picked the whiskey, as with one hand in his pocket, he twirled the drink with the other, while dark loomed in carefully.
“And what if she doesn’t accept it? What do you do?” Enzo said.
“It’s too late to let her go now, don’t you think Enzo?” Dante’s gaze now hardened, as even the thought of having being rejected deemed his ego.
“They will use her against us, are we ready for that?” Enzo asked him again.
“I’m the one who called you and you’re the one asking questions.” One statement from Dante and Enzo remembered his place.
“Okay.” Enzo already knew the answer to what he asked, as even if Dante didn’t reveal it to him, he knew him well.
“She is already against me and I don’t plan on changing it. All I need is for her to be alive.” Dante spoke again and Enzo could tell there was more to what Dante’s told him. “One more thing Enzo,” Dante’s now sipped the whiskey in his hand. “Under no circumstances should Lucien get his hands on her. You must protect her with your life. That is my order.”
Present.
Elena.
“Dante!” An unknown voice peeked the echos of the now distorted mansion, whereas my gaze couldn’t leave Dante’s lifeless body for one second. “What is going on here?…Fuck, Dante!” My gaze eventually rose, seeing a tall Caucasian man looming over me, with tattoos covering all of his arms.
“Marcel, how the f**k did you let this happen?” The guys gaze hot with fire, as he glared at Marcel.
“I swear Enzo, it happened so fast. I didn’t even know, I never would have let this happen, Boss threw himself for her.” Marcel told the guy.
“Can’t you do something to stop the bleeding, aren’t you the doctor?” Enzo’s gaze now averted to mine.
“Excuse me? What the f**k do you think I’m doing? Huh?” My eyes was also filled with fury and confusion.
“Well he risked his life to save yours, so you should at least return the same. f**k he’s loosing a lot of blood.” Enzo said again.
“Forgive me, but I definitely did not ask him to do that, and even if I wanted to save his life, there was no way I could do that. The bullet has almost pressed to his heart if it hasn’t already, and as you can see I’m trying my best to keep him from loosing more blood.” My hands trembled, as only more blood oozed out of Dante’s chest.
“Then what use are you? I thought you were a doctor?” The Enzo guy insulted me to my face.
“First of all, I didn’t asked to be kidnapped by your boss.” I told Enzo to his face. “Second of all, I am a resident doctor and your boss didn’t let me complete my residency and third of all, I do not have magic hands that can heal him, he needs surgery and I can not give him that with my bare hands.” I made my words clear.
“Wow, what a woman Dante picked.” Enzo glared.
“You can judge me all you want, but Dante is dying and if he doesn’t get the medical attention he needs right now, none of us would like the outcome.” I told him.
“Marcel pick him up to the chopper, we fly him out.” Enzo ordered.
“What the hell? Are you trying to kill him? Put him on that chopper and I promise you, he wouldn’t last any more minute.” My hands still pressed on Dante’s chest. “Don’t you hear me at all?” I’m certain the veins on my forehead were already showcasing from all the straining I was doing.
“Then what the f**k do we do? You can’t treat him, and you ask me to leave him to die?” Enzo yelled.
“I never said I couldn’t treat him, I said he needs surgery and you don’t have any equipment to give him that, and I can not perform a surgery as this on my own. I will need help.” I told them.
“So what do you need? We can get it urgently.” Marcel now spoke.
“He needs a hospital, they’re machines there and…it’s easier.” I told them.
“So tell me. If you get your well equipped room, you can perform surgery on him?” Enzo asked me.
“Yes, but I can’t do it alone. I need someone to help…someone who knows the job.” I said.
“Then we’ll get you someone.” Enzo stared at me determined.
“You mean you’ll kidnap another doctor just to save Dante’s life?” I needed to know.
“Incase you haven’t noticed, we’re at war and I’m sure Dante’s life is more precious than any at the moment.” Enzo said to my face with audacity.
“Then count me out.” I was stern. “You kidnap another person and I do not perform this surgery at all and Dante dies. You move him and he dies also.”
“Are you really negotiating with me?” Enzo stared at me as though, he had never been spoken back to before. “Dante was indeed right.” Enzo ran a hand through his hair. “Then what the f**k do you want to save his life?” Enzo asked me.
“Even if you get a someone, as soon as the surgery is successful, you let them go. Immediately.” There wasn’t a single fear in my body as I spoke, because they liked it or not, Dante was their priority.
“Is that all?” Enzo asked me, and I reasoned more to say, but when I glanced back at Dante who was lifeless on the floor, my mouth went shut.
“Yes.” I agreeed.
“Then we have your room ready. Get the doctor Marcel.”
