CHAPTER 3: Rules of Engagement
The heavy click of the automated door seal echoed through the master suite like a gavel dropping in a courtroom, leaving the four of us trapped together in an unbearable, heat-laced silence. Early morning sunbeams poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the opulent black marble and emerald velvet, but all I could focus on was the suffocating masculine energy surrounding me. Three towering men, each capable of bending the financial district to his knee with a single phone call, stood inside my bedroom like rival kings surveying disputed territory.
"If we are doing this," Alexander began, his cold baritone slicing through the quiet room like a honed blade, "there will be strict order. This estate operates under my absolute authority, and Lyra’s safety is the primary directive."
Julian scoffed loudly, unbuttoning his tailored cuffs and rolling his sleeves up over his muscular forearms. "Don't pretend this is purely about security, Alexander. You held a coerced contract over her father's head to force a merger. If anyone in this house poses a threat to her freedom, it's you."
"Gentlemen, please!" Dominic cut in, tossing himself casually onto the plush velvet armchair at the foot of the bed. He kicked his feet up onto the leather ottoman, crossing his ankles with lazy, dangerous grace. "Why argue over technicalities when the solution is so painfully simple? We just let the sweet girl decide who she wants in her bed tonight. My vote is already cast for myself."
"Shut up, Dominic," Julian and Alexander snapped in uncanny unison, their glares turning on him instantly.
I gripped the edge of the marble vanity behind me, my knuckles turning white as anger flared through the lingering fear in my chest. "I am standing right here!" I yelled, my voice ringing loudly across the expansive room. "I am not a prize to be divided up, I am not a piece of land to be surveyed, and I am certainly not going into anyone's bed!"
Alexander turned his piercing gray eyes on me. The icy detachment in his gaze softened just a fraction, replaced by an intense, dark focus that felt completely overwhelming. "You are pregnant, Lyra. Your father’s mercenaries are actively sweeping every block in the city for you, and your half-sister Chloe is already leaking paid stories to the press about your sudden disappearance to protect the family stock prices. Out there, you are prey. In here, you are protected."
He stepped closer, his heavy dress shoes making no sound against the thick Persian rug. Stopping just inches away, he reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek black smartphone, setting it on the marble counter beside my hand.
"You have full access to the outside world, but for your security, your location remains locked," Alexander said softly, his voice a velvet blade. "You have your own private quarters, a dedicated medical team arriving tomorrow morning for your first official prenatal scan, and total freedom inside the estate perimeter."
"And what do you get out of this?" I asked, searching his unreadable features for any sign of deception. "What does a reclusive billionaire want with an unwanted, illegitimate heiress?"
Alexander leaned down, his face stopping mere inches from mine. The rich scent of dark amber and crisp rain washed over me, making my heart flutter betrayingly. "I want the Vance legacy brought to its knees," he murmured, his long thumb lightly grazing the fast-paced pulse hammering in my throat. "And I want the woman who was meant to be my quiet, meek pawn to realize she belongs at the head of my table."
My heart thundered wildly against my ribs at his proximity, but before I could digest his staggering words, a firm, warm hand wrapped gently around my wrist, pulling me back against a solid chest.
"That's enough, Alexander," Julian growled softly against the back of my neck. His grip was protective, possessive, and painfully familiar. The heat radiating off his body triggered an instant avalanche of chaotic memories—the dark penthouse suite at Obsidian, the tangled silk sheets, the fevered whispers in the dark.
Julian turned me around to face him. His stormy obsidian eyes burned with an unquenchable fire as he looked down into my eyes. "You ran away from me at dawn," he whispered, his voice dropping to that low, velvet-rough register that made my knees feel dangerously weak. "You took your secret, your breath, and left me waking up to an empty bed. Do you have any idea what it felt like to realize the only woman who ever made me feel alive vanished into the mist?"
"Julian..." I gasped, my hand resting against the lapel of his charcoal suit jacket. I could feel the rapid, heavy beat of his heart beneath my palm. "I had to run. I didn't know who you were, and I was terrified of what my father would do."
"You don't have to be terrified anymore, sweet girl," he murmured, his large hand cupping my cheek, his thumb gently tracing my lower lip. "You came into my company. You brought our baby right back to my doorstep. I am never letting you go again."
"Oh, give me a break!" Dominic groaned, standing up from the armchair with a dramatic sigh, though the intense spark in his bright blue eyes betrayed his playful act. He walked over, smoothly slotting himself between Julian and me, forcing Julian to release his possessive grip on my wrist.
Dominic grabbed both of my hands in his, lifting them to his lips and pressing a warm, lingering kiss against my knuckles that sent shivers straight up my arms. "Don't listen to these brooding brooders, Lyra. They’re all business and no fun. You need fresh air, proper food, and someone who actually knows how to make you laugh."
He flashed a dazzling, wicked smile that could melt glaciers. "I’ve already instructed the estate chef to prepare a full, nutrient-rich dinner tailored specifically for expectant mothers. And after that, I'm taking you to the private rooftop conservatory to look at the stars."
"She stays in this room to rest," Alexander commanded sharply from behind us.
"She goes nowhere alone with you, Dominic," Julian added, his dark eyes narrowing into deadly slits.
I looked between the three of them—the cold, strategic fiancé who offered an unbreakable shield; the intense, passionate CEO who claimed my heart and body; and the chaotic, charming playboy who offered a temporary escape from the madness.
A sudden, terrifying wave of dizziness hit me, the accumulated weight of the day’s revelations, the pregnancy, and the overwhelming masculine energy in the room finally crashing down on my shoulders. I swayed slightly, my vision blurring at the edges as the ceiling began to tilt.
Before I could hit the floor, three pairs of strong hands caught me simultaneously.
Julian’s arm wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me back against his chest. Alexander’s broad hand supported my back, while Dominic caught my hand, his playful demeanor instantly vanishing into deep, genuine panic.
"Lyra!" Julian breathed, his voice laced with sudden, raw terror.
"Get the estate physician up here right now!" Alexander barked over his shoulder toward the door monitors, his voice echoing like thunder through the master suite.
"Hey, stay with us, sweet heart," Dominic murmured softly, his blue eyes wide with worry as he gently brushed a stray strand of hair from my damp forehead. "Deep breaths. You're safe. We've got you."
They lifted me effortlessly, laying me gently on the massive king-sized bed draped in soft silk. Julian sat on the mattress beside me, holding my trembling hand tightly in his, refusing to let go. Alexander stood towering at the foot of the bed, his face pale with a rare crack in his stoic mask, while Dominic poured a glass of cool water from the bedside carafe.
"I'm fine," I whispered, my voice weak as I took a slow sip from the glass Dominic gently held to my lips. "It's just... too much. All of this."
"I know," Julian murmured, bringing my hand to his lips and pressing a soft, reverent kiss against my skin. "We pushed too hard. I'm sorry, little bird."
Alexander stepped closer, his commanding aura softening into something far more dangerous—a quiet, unyielding devotion. "The rules change now," Alexander announced quietly, looking at Julian and Dominic before settling his gray eyes on me. "No more pressure. No more fighting in her presence. Until the baby is born and her health is secure, this room is her sanctuary. We protect her together, or we answer to each other."
Dominic nodded, his usual teasing tone replaced by earnest resolve. "Agreed. For the princess and the baby."
Julian tightened his grip on my fingers, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an unspoken promise. "Agreed."
I lay back against the plush pillows, looking at the three most powerful billionaires in the country, all standing guard over me in a golden cage. I was no longer the unwanted secret in the Vance attic. I was the center of a storm, holding the key to an empire in my womb.
The heavy double doors clicked open as the physician rushed in, but as my gaze flicked to the security wall monitors across the room, my stomach dropped into a icy void.
A live surveillance feed on the desk showed a black sleek sedan parked right outside the estate's high iron gates. Inside the passenger seat, staring directly up at the master suite window through pair of night-vision binoculars, was my half-sister, Chloe Vance—and she was holding a heavy manila envelope labeled DNA & SURROGACY MATCH.
