CHAPTER TWELVE: SUDDEN SHIFT

1531 Words
Kai stared at the anonymous post for a long moment. The screen seemed to blur in his hands. Tomorrow’s post will be much more interesting. The words sat heavily in his chest. Across the table, Adrian’s expression had gone cold in a way Kai hadn’t seen before. Not his usual detached indifference. This was sharper. Deliberate. The kind of cold that meant his mind was already working through possibilities. “Someone’s doing this on purpose,” Kai said quietly. Adrian gave a single nod. “Obviously.” Kai frowned. “You think it’s one person?” “The timing is too precise.” Adrian leaned back slightly, his injured shoulder stiffening as he shifted. “The first photo was uploaded less than three minutes after the hallway incident.” Kai’s stomach tightened. He remembered the flood of comments. The way his denial had vanished beneath them almost instantly. Then the second post after the library blackout. And now this. Too consistent. Too intentional. “You think someone’s following us?” “I think someone wants attention.” Kai stared at the screen. “Why?” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Does it matter?” Yes, Kai thought. It mattered a lot. Because whoever was behind this wasn’t just spreading gossip. They were watching. Waiting. Tracking their movements closely enough to catch moments no one else should have seen. And somehow, that felt worse than the rumors themselves. Kai looked up sharply. “So what do we do?” For a moment, Adrian said nothing. Then slowly, something calculating flickered in his eyes. And Kai immediately disliked it. “What?” Adrian folded his hands together. “We give them what they want.” Kai blinked. “…What?” Adrian’s expression remained unreadable. “If someone’s trying this hard to create a story, then we control the narrative.” Kai stared. “No.” “Yes.” “No.” “It’s the simplest solution.” Kai nearly laughed from disbelief. “Your solution is to pretend the rumors are true?” “Temporarily.” “That’s insane.” “It’s strategic.” “It’s humiliating.” “It’s effective.” Kai glared at him. “You cannot be serious.” Adrian leaned forward slightly. “Think about it. If we act exactly the way they expect—close, familiar, obvious—then whoever’s behind this gets careless.” Kai folded his arms. “That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.” “It’s not.” “It absolutely is.” Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Do you have a better idea?” Kai opened his mouth. Closed it. Because annoyingly, he didn’t. And Adrian knew it. The smugness that briefly flickered across his face made Kai want to throw his textbook at him. “This is ridiculous,” Kai muttered. “Yet practical.” Kai hated practical. Practical usually meant Adrian was right. And Adrian being right was already one of life’s greatest irritations. Still, after several long moments, Kai exhaled sharply. “Fine.” Adrian raised a brow. “Fine?” “Temporary,” Kai snapped. “Strictly strategic.” “Of course.” “And if this blows up in our faces, I’m blaming you.” Adrian’s mouth twitched faintly. “Noted.” Kai immediately regretted agreeing. --- The next morning, Ravenscroft Academy buzzed with its usual restless energy. Students filled the hallways, trading rumors and half-finished gossip before first period. Kai entered through the front doors with his usual determined stride. He barely made it ten steps before he spotted Adrian waiting near the lockers. And immediately regretted every decision that had led to this moment. Adrian looked annoyingly composed. One hand in his pocket. Expression calm. As if pretending intimacy with your academic rival was just another task on his schedule. Kai stopped in front of him. “Well?” Adrian looked him over. “You look tense.” Kai glared. “I’m standing next to you voluntarily. Obviously I’m tense.” A faint flicker of amusement crossed Adrian’s face. Then, before Kai could react— Adrian stepped closer. Too close. Close enough for Kai to feel the warmth radiating from him. Kai’s breath hitched. “What are you doing?” “Selling it.” His voice was low. Controlled. And infuriatingly calm. Kai became suddenly aware of nearby students slowing down. Watching. Whispering. The performance had begun. Adrian’s hand lifted. For one alarming second, Kai thought he was about to touch his face. Instead, Adrian reached past him and casually adjusted the strap of Kai’s bag where it had twisted awkwardly over his shoulder. The motion was simple. Natural. Intimate enough to make surrounding students visibly freeze. A sharp chorus of whispers broke out instantly. “Oh my god—” “They’re together.” “I told you.” Kai’s face burned. He forced himself not to flinch. Not to shove Adrian away. This was strategy. Nothing more. Adrian stepped back. Barely. “Try to look less horrified.” Kai smiled tightly. “Try to fall down a staircase.” “Hostile.” “Accurate.” They walked toward class together. Every pair of eyes followed them. Kai hated it. He hated the stares. The whispers. The constant awareness of Adrian walking beside him. And most of all, he hated how natural Adrian made it look. As if this kind of closeness didn’t affect him at all. Meanwhile Kai’s pulse felt dangerously unstable. It was infuriating. He told himself it was irritation. Pure, uncomplicated irritation. Hatred. That was all this was. It had to be. Because the alternative— No. Absolutely not. --- By lunch, the academy was in chaos. The rumors had exploded beyond anything Kai expected. The confession page had posted blurry photos of him and Adrian entering class together. Another showed Adrian leaning close to say something during chemistry. A third captured Kai shoving Adrian’s shoulder in irritation, though from the angle it looked almost playful. The comments were relentless. Maya nearly choked laughing when she cornered Kai in the cafeteria. “This is either the most committed revenge plan ever,” she wheezed, “or I’m witnessing the world’s weirdest courtship.” “It’s neither.” “Sure.” Kai glared. Maya grinned. Then her eyes darted past him. “Oh wow.” Kai turned. Adrian was approaching. Without hesitation, he slid into the empty seat beside Kai. Close enough that their shoulders brushed. Kai nearly inhaled his drink. “What are you doing?” “Maintaining consistency.” His voice was calm. Too calm. Students around them openly stared now. Maya looked dangerously delighted. “Oh this is incredible.” “Be quiet,” Kai hissed. Adrian reached casually for Kai’s notebook. Their fingers brushed. Kai stiffened instantly. The contact was brief. Accidental. And yet a strange heat shot up his arm. He jerked his hand back. Adrian’s expression flickered. Only for a second. Then it was gone. But Kai caught it. And something about that brief shift unsettled him. Because Adrian looked affected. Not visibly. Not enough for anyone else to notice. But Kai noticed. And for reasons he couldn’t explain, that realization made his chest tighten. --- By the end of the day, the act had only intensified. Adrian walked him to the library. Pulled out his chair with deadpan seriousness. Leaned close during study sessions to point out notes they both could clearly see from a distance. Every action was subtle. Calculated. Believable. And every single one sent Kai’s nerves into chaos. He told himself it was because he hated Adrian. Because anyone would feel uncomfortable in this situation. Because being forced into fake intimacy with your worst rival would naturally be unbearable. That had to be it. Across from him, Adrian remained composed. But internally, he was unraveling. He kept his face unreadable. His movements steady. His tone neutral. Yet every moment near Kai felt like stepping onto unstable ice. The brush of their shoulders. The faint scent of Kai’s soap. The way Kai’s expression shifted between fury and visible confusion. It made Adrian’s pulse pound harder than any hockey final ever had. And he hated himself for it. This was strategy. Nothing more. He repeated it silently. Again. And again. Still, when Kai leaned closer to point out an error in his notes, Adrian’s heartbeat slammed painfully against his ribs. He forced himself not to react. Not to pull away. Not to stare. Barely. Then the library doors opened. A sharp hush fell over the room. Professor Hale entered holding a stack of papers. His expression was unreadable. “Attention.” The room quieted instantly. He looked directly at Kai and Adrian. Then said— “I’ve just received notice that the academic competition has been moved forward.” The room stirred. Kai frowned. “What?” Professor Hale adjusted his glasses. “The preliminary round begins tomorrow morning.” Silence. Then he added— “And partnerships that fail the first round will be immediately disqualified.” Kai’s stomach dropped. Beside him, Adrian went perfectly still. Tomorrow. They had less than twenty-four hours. And suddenly, their ridiculous performance wasn’t the only thing at stake anymore.
