“It’s already set, Ann. You’ll be going to France in two days,” I said. From the way she looked at me, I could tell her heart was breaking.
“Can’t I just stay with you? I promise I won’t cause any problems. Besides, you’re having a baby soon—you’ll need me around,” she pleaded. Of course she already knew. Nic couldn’t hide his excitement. Even my father knew, thanks to Diana. Dad didn’t appreciate the thought of an illegitimate child, but that wasn’t my concern now. My sister’s life was at risk.
I walked to her and pulled her close. “Ann, I know I can’t tell you everything, but just know you’ll be safe out there. Please, just bear with me.”
