Chapter 7 New Boyfriend?

867 Words
The morning sun streamed through the gaps in the curtains, casting a warm glow on Claire's face. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and slowly sat up. After getting dressed, she headed downstairs, preparing to go to the hospital where she had previously worked to collect some of her belongings. As she reached the living room, she saw Harrison sitting on the couch, a cup of coffee in hand. Seeing her, he smiled. "Heading out this early?" She nodded, her tone neutral. "Yeah. I need to pick up some things from the hospital." Harrison set down his coffee and stood. "I'll drive you. It's been a while since we went out together." Claire hesitated for a moment before smiling slightly. "Thank you." Harrison pulled up in front of the hospital. "Want me to go in with you?" Claire shook her head. "I won't be long." She made her way towards her old office when she passed by a room with the door slightly ajar. Out of habit, she glanced inside. Her heart immediately sank. Inside, Felix was sitting with Leo, who was undergoing medical tests—likely a preliminary evaluation for his kidney transplant. Leo looked up and spotted Claire. His first reaction was to hide behind Felix, as if she were some terrifying monster. Felix followed his gaze and frowned when he saw Claire. Annoyance flickered across his face before he scoffed. "Claire, stop forcing Leo. He's already made his choice—he wants to stay with me. If you agree to the divorce, I'll let you keep your job at the hospital." Claire let out a cold laugh. After a pause, she said, "I already know Leo's decision. I'll sign the divorce papers. You can have full custody. But I want to speak with Leo alone." Felix looked taken aback, clearly not expecting her to agree so easily. He hesitated before finally nodding. "Fine, but make it quick." Felix left the room with the doctor, leaving Claire and Leo alone. She studied him for a moment, noticing how he kept scratching his arms—one of the many symptoms of diabetes-related skin irritation. From her bag, she pulled out an insulin pen. Her voice was calm. "Leo, it's time for your injection." Leo immediately recoiled, stepping back in protest. "I don't want a shot! Why do you always make me get shots whenever I see you?" Claire didn't get angry this time. Instead, she placed the pen on the table and met his gaze, her tone indifferent. "Fine. Don't take it. Keep scratching yourself until your skin is raw." Leo froze, a hint of fear flashing in his eyes. His small hands trembled as he whispered, "Mommy, I really don't want to..." Claire's expression remained firm. "Then keep scratching. It's your choice." Leo hesitated, glancing at his irritated skin. After a long pause, he finally nodded, stepping closer. Claire picked up the insulin pen and administered the shot. Leo winced but didn't cry, only biting his lip tightly. Watching him, Claire felt a twinge of guilt—but she quickly pushed it aside. As the medication took effect, Leo's skin irritation started to subside. He sighed in relief, realizing that Claire, despite always making him take his injections, was only trying to help. For the first time, he looked at her and gave a small smile. But before he could say anything, Claire spoke first, "Leo, that was the last time I'll be giving you an injection. From now on, you'll have to do it yourself." Since Leo hated her giving him shots so much, she wouldn't force him anymore. Leo blinked in confusion. "What do you mean?" She calmly packed up the medical kit. "Your father and I are getting divorced. I won't be around to remind you. You'll have to manage it on your own." There was something cold about the way she said it—so detached, like she had no intention of seeing him again. He looked up at her with wide, watery eyes. "Mommy... are you leaving me?" Claire met his gaze, unflinching. She reached out and gently ruffled his hair, her tone void of emotion. "This was your choice, wasn't it?" ***** Stepping out of the room, Claire spotted Felix waiting on a nearby bench. She walked over, her voice composed. "Send me the divorce papers when they're ready. The sooner, the better." Felix clenched his jaw. "Don't worry. It won't take long." He had expected her to cling to the marriage, to fight for custody. Instead, she was walking away without a second thought. That threw him off more than he cared to admit. Without another word, Claire turned and left the hospital, not bothering to look back. Back in the car, Harrison took the bag from her hands and placed it in the backseat. "What took so long?" Claire smiled lightly. "Ran into someone I used to know. Had a quick chat." Inside the hospital, Leo stood on tiptoe, watching through the window as Claire got into Harrison's car. A flicker of confusion crossed his face. Turning to Felix, he tugged at his sleeve. "Daddy... is that Mommy's new boyfriend?" Felix stiffened, his hands slowly clenching into fists.
