Chapter 4 Resignation

881 Words
On the third morning, Felix returned home with Leo. Both of them looked exhausted, but their eyes were bright with excitement. However, Leo felt a twinge of disappointment deep inside. He didn't want to leave Julia. Julia was so kind—generous, gentle, and she bought him so many snacks that his mom would never allow him to eat. "Daddy, can I go back to the island again?" Leo looked up at his father, his face filled with hope. Felix ruffled Leo's hair and smiled. "Of course." Leo managed a small smile, but it quickly faded. He mumbled, "And I want to play with Julia..." Felix's expression darkened for a moment, but he quickly returned to his usual calm demeanor. "Julia has other things to take care of. We'll talk about it next time." Leo lowered his head, a hint of disappointment in his eyes. He was also worried that Claire might be angry. After all, it had been a while since they'd gone on a trip together. Felix seemed to catch on to Leo's thoughts and reassured him, "Your mommy won't be upset. She's been married to me for years, and I've never seen her angry." However, the housekeeper Mandy came over, looking worried. "Sir, when Mrs. Williams left this morning, she seemed upset. Maybe you should call her and check in." Felix frowned, his tone sharp. "Claire's probably just out to clear her head. She'll be back in a couple of days. No need to worry." Back when Claire used to get upset, it never lasted more than three days. Felix wasn't concerned at all about whether she'd be upset or not. With that, he led Leo upstairs. Leo went into his room and started playing with his toys, pushing his little cars around on the floor while making engine noises. But after a while, Leo stopped suddenly. At this time of day, Mom would usually call to remind him to take his medicine. But today, the phone didn't ring, and he waited for a while without any sign of her. His heart sank. "Why hasn't Mommy called yet?" Leo mumbled to himself, a sense of loss creeping into his voice. He quickly shook off the feeling and smiled faintly. "Who cares? I don't need to take medicine anymore. Maybe Mommy just doesn't want to interrupt my playtime." Felix had also planned to call Claire, wondering what her thoughts were on the divorce. He picked up his phone, dialed her number, and was about to press "call" when a message from Julia popped up on the screen. He hesitated, and then without a second thought, canceled the call to Claire. Meanwhile, Claire had moved into the small apartment she had bought. It was a two-bedroom place—not big, but it felt incredibly cozy to her. She spent the entire day cleaning, scrubbing every corner spotless. As she opened her suitcase to unpack, she found a photo—one of her and Leo together. Leo was grinning widely, and she was holding him in her arms with all the love a mother could have. A pang of pain hit her chest as she gently stroked the photo. But then, she quickly shook her head, carefully packed the picture away, and placed it at the bottom of the drawer. After finishing up the apartment, she went to the hospital. She walked to the office of Director Arthur Langston, her nerves fluttering in her chest. Taking a deep breath, she knocked and stepped inside. "Claire, what brings you here?" Arthur looked up at her, smiling kindly. He was one of the few who knew Claire's true background. "Mr. Langston, I'm here to submit my resignation," Claire said in a calm voice. Arthur looked up, surprised. "Claire, why are you quitting? Is there something wrong with your work?" Claire shook her head. "Did you... talk to Mr. Williams about this?" he asked, his voice softening. "No," she replied decisively. "This is my decision. I don't need to discuss it with him." Arthur frowned, his concern apparent. "Claire, this hospital is invested by him. If you leave, without his protection, it's going to be very hard for you to survive." Although Claire had been brought into the hospital through Felix's connections, her professional skills were excellent—she was as capable as anyone, and always willing to work extra hours or take on research. Arthur knew well that she had joined this hospital specifically to take care of Leo. She had the dedication, the expertise, and a deep care for her patients—everything except the sheltered life of a rich housewife. Claire smiled gently. "I'll figure something out. Please help me with the resignation paperwork." Arthur studied her for a moment, a sigh escaping him. "Alright, if that's what you want, I'll process it." Claire nodded and turned to leave the office. Arthur watched her walk away, worry creeping into his mind. He picked up his phone and started to dial Felix's number, but then he remembered what Felix had told him before, "Treat Claire just like any other doctor. No special treatment." He sighed deeply, setting the phone back down. "Well, if Mr. Williams wants it that way, I'll have to follow the procedure," he muttered, abandoning the idea of calling.
