Kate pressed the doorbell. Shortly afterward, she heard Sarah's hurried footsteps behind the door.
"Hey, babygrul!" greeted Sarah as she opened the door. They shared a brief embrace, which was interrupted by Kevin.
"Miss Kay!" Kevin shouted as he joyfully ran towards Kate and wrapped his small arms around her waist. Kate lifted him into the air, and he giggled. Sarah stood there watching them with a smile on her face.
"How are you, my little champ?" Kate asked as she carried him into the house while Sarah locked the door and followed behind.
"I'm fine. Miss Kay, can you come and see my painting?" Kevin asked immediately after Kate put him down.
He tugged Kate by the hand, and she willingly followed him into his room. Kevin made Kate sit on his tiny bed while he hurried through a small pile of white papers on his reading desk. Kate waited patiently.
"Not this one," he muttered to himself as he continued scattering the papers across the table in search of a particular one. Kate moved closer and stooped beside him.
"These are beautiful," Kate said as she admired the drawings Kevin had made on the sheets of paper.
"That's not the one," Kevin said in frustration as Kate examined one of the drawings with interest.
"Oh... but this one is nice too," Kate replied.
Kevin continued searching for the one he wanted.
"Here it is!" Kevin shouted joyfully. Finally, he had found it.
He handed it to Kate, who admired its uniqueness.
Sarah had been standing in the doorway the whole time, watching them. Neither Kate nor Kevin had noticed her presence.
"Kevin, please let Aunty Kate get some rest. She just got here," Sarah said, finally announcing her presence.
"Mommy, Miss Kay said she likes my drawings," Kevin reported as he ran over to Sarah, who was standing in the doorway.
"Really? Did you say thank you to Aunty Kate?" Sarah asked.
"Thank you, Miss Kay!" Kevin said almost immediately.
"You're most welcome, my little champ," Kate replied.
They headed back into the living room.
"Look what I bought—ice cream and pizza!" Kate announced.
"Yay!" Kevin and Sarah shouted excitedly.
Kate handed Sarah the plastic bags containing the ice cream and pizza box. Sarah went into the kitchen and returned with plates. She served the pizza onto the plates and handed everyone a cup of ice cream. They spent the afternoon eating ice cream, enjoying the pizza, and watching Kevin's favorite cartoons.
Kevin later fell asleep on the couch, and Kate carried him to his room while Sarah cleared the plates.
Shortly afterward, Kate and Sarah were alone in the sitting room.
"I wanted to ask you for a favor," Sarah began.
"Anything," Kate replied, surprised by Sarah's request. She knew Sarah was never the type to ask for favours easily, so she waited patiently to hear what it was.
"Will you be my maid of honor?" Sarah asked.
Kate's eyes widened with excitement.
"Of course! I'll be your maid of honor."
She reached out and gave Sarah a warm hug.
"And... and... and..." Sarah said, deliberately drawing out her words.
Kate listened anxiously for what would come next.
"You'll also be planning my wedding!"
"Oh my goodness! That would be amazing!" Kate exclaimed, overwhelmed with emotion.
"I discussed it with Marcus, and we both agreed you're the best. It would mean so much to have my best friend by my side—not only as my maid of honor but also as my wedding planner," Sarah said.
"Yass! Clock it!" Kate replied, making a gesture by tapping her thumb and index finger together.
"Yess, babygrul!"
The two friends celebrated excitedly.
After the excitement had died down and silence returned, Kate spoke quietly.
"Sarah... I signed the contract."
Sarah stared at Kate for a moment before bursting into uncontrollable laughter.
"What's so funny?" Kate asked, annoyed.
"Why are you pulling such a long face?" Sarah asked, trying to stifle her laughter.
"Like what?" Kate asked, confused.
"Gurrl, you're taking this way too seriously. It's just a job! Better put that ego of yours aside. Get the job done, get paid, and save the company. You see? The plan is simple," Sarah said.
"It's not so simple, Sarah," Kate countered.
"This is the only option you've got, girl, and I'm glad you're taking the chance."
"Yeah... not like I had a choice anyway," Kate muttered.
"So, how are things at the office?" Sarah asked.
"Two of the company's delivery trucks broke down while on duty yesterday, after we had just repaired three other trucks only two weeks ago. Do you know the most annoying part? That was the very first news Miss Charity gave me the moment I arrived at the office after my meeting with Ryan."
Sarah listened quietly.
"Can you imagine that?" Kate asked.
Sarah nodded, acknowledging her frustration.
Kate checked the time on her phone and sighed.
"Ryan is coming over to my house this evening."
"You don't mean that! No way!" Sarah said, her eyes widening with excitement.
"Why are you so excited about that?" Kate asked, irritated.
"Why do you always get so worked up about him? You don't hate him that much, do you?" Sarah teased with a wink.
"Eww," Kate replied.
"Ryan is every girl's dream, Kate."
"Then I'm not one of those girls," Kate retorted.
"Like it or not, Ryan is every girl's dream. Have you seen his pictures in magazines? Handsome, rich, young, intelligent, tall... name it."
"Arrogant, proud..." Kate added with a smirk.
"Anyway, he's picking me up at my house so we can go shopping. We're attending his friend's wedding in Dubai."
"No way, grul!" Sarah shouted in surprise, cutting Kate off.
"Mommy, is everything alright?" Kevin asked sleepily.
"You see? You woke him up with your shouting," Kate said quietly.
Sarah turned in surprise to see her son awake.
"You're awake, darling?" Sarah asked.
Kevin nodded in response.
Kate packed her things to leave.
“Are you leaving Miss Kay?” Kevin asked.
“Yes, my little champ,” Kate answered, still putting her things together. “But I will be back soon.”
