981 Words
Even until the morning after their first date, Lucas was left dumbfounded. He didn't understand why Emma shunned his attempt to kiss her. Different thoughts kept playing in his mind, he could forget the incident. The same way Lucas was having different thoughts about the incident so was Emma, she could not understand why she did it. She convinced herself that maybe it was not the right time. The following days were a whirlwind of emotions for both Lucas and Emma. Their budding relationship was marked by moments of intense affection and occasional friction, as they steered through the complexities of their different worlds. The schedule of Emma at the hospital was demanding and most times it leaves her famished and exhausted by the end of her shifts. Lucas also was consumed by his work, dealing with a number of high profile cases that require his undivided attention. Despite their hectic lives, they both made efforts to see each other as often as possible rather than just keeping in touch through phone calls and chats. They appreciated and cherished every moment they could steal away together. One evening after a particularly laborious day at the hospital, Emma arrived at Lucas' apartment for dinner. She was greeted by the delicious aroma of homemade pasta sauce. The view of Lucas in the kitchen, he looked slightly rattled but determined. “Hi, babe” Lucas greeted her with a smile while wiping his hands on a towel. “I thought I should surprise you with dinner, rather than you cooking on getting here” he added. “Awwwn, so thoughtful of you.” Emma replied with a blush. “This is amazing, Lucas. Thank you” she appreciates the effort he had put in making dinner for them. After a while, they had tidy the kitchen and their dinner was served. They sat down to eat and conversations started flowing easily as they shared stories about their day. But as the evening wore on, the topic of their conversation shifted to their future and the first sparks of friction began to appear. “Babe, I have been thinking,” Lucas began, the tone of his voice breath seriousness. “We should plan a trip together. Maybe a weekend getaway to Hamptons or somewhere nice.” he continued. Emma hesitated. It took some seconds before Emma uttered a word, unsure of how to respond. “I would love to, but my work schedule is unpredictable. It is hard to plan anything too far or in advance.” “Can't you just take a few days off? You work so hard, Emma. You deserve a break.” Lucas replied with a slight frown. “I wish it was that simple,” Emma revealed, dropping a hint of frustration through her voice. “But my patients need me. It is not easy to just hop and leave.” The conversation grew even more tense, both of them feeling the strain of their conflicting priorities. During the intense conversation, Lucas still recollected the incident in front of the park. He is used to getting whatever he wanted so he struggled to understand the demands of Emma's job while Emma felt torn between her commitment to her work and her desire to be with Lucas. There was an awkward silence as they finished their dinner, they were both lost in their thoughts. After clearing the dishes, Emma thought about leaving but Lucas suggested they see a movie together, hoping to lighten up their mood. Nevertheless, the tension remained and it cast a shadow over what was meant to be a relaxing evening for both of them. As the movie came to an end, Lucas turned to Emma and said with an expression mixed with concern and determination. “I don't want this to come between us, Emma. We will find a way to make it work, I promise.” “I know, Lucas. It is just complicated.” Emma replied. A part of her remained unsure about the prospect. Their conversation that night marked another milestone and the beginning of a new phase in their relationship. One where they had to face the realities of their different lives. Despite the fall out, their love for each other remained strong and a guiding light through the challenges they faced. The following weeks, they learnt to compromise and communicate more openly with each other. Lucas began to appreciate the demands of Emma's job and Emma in return put in more efforts to carve out more time for their relationship. It has not been easy but they are committed to making their relationship work. One Saturday, Lucas surprised Emma with a day trip to a nearby vineyard. It was a welcome escape from their usual routines. They spent the day tasting wines, enjoying a picnic and enjoying each other’s company. The idyllic setting and the time away from their respective stresses helped them reconnect and reaffirm their commitment to each other. As they sat under a large oak tree, sipping wine while they watched the sun set over the rolling hills, Lucas took Emma's hand in his. “I am so glad we gave this a chance. Days like this remind me of how lucky I am to have you in my life.” he said. Emma leaned towards him and kissed her. It was a gentle and tender kiss, filled with joy and hope for better days. “I would not trade this for anything, Lucas” Emma said. “Also I'm sorry for the kiss dodge, I have always wished for this moment” she added with a smile. Despite the sparks and friction, their love continued to grow which was a proof of their resilience and determination. They knew more challenges would come their way in the future but together they felt ready to face whatever comes their way.
