Misunderstanding and Missteps

638 Words
The following week, things took a turn for the worse. Emma had tried to reconnect with Lucas after her weekend away, but their conversations continued to feel strained. It was as if every word they spoke was laced with underlying tension, neither of them saying what they truly meant. One evening, after a particularly long and stressful day at the hospital, Emma came home to find Lucas on the phone with a colleague. He was pacing the living room, discussing logistics for the LA office, and didn’t seem to notice Emma had walked in. Frustration welled up inside her as she listened to him talk about plans for his future—plans that didn’t seem to include her. She tried to shake the feeling, reminding herself that he was just doing his job, but the gnawing sense of exclusion wouldn’t go away. When Lucas finally hung up, Emma stood in the doorway, arms crossed. “You didn’t even say hello,” she said, her voice sharper than she intended. Lucas looked up, surprised. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were home. It was just a quick call.” “A quick call?” Emma repeated, incredulous. “It seems like every time I see you lately, you’re on the phone or working on something for LA. Do you even care about what’s happening here, with us?” Lucas’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Of course I care, Emma. But I’m trying to balance a lot right now. You know that.” Emma shook her head, her frustration boiling over. “Do I? Because it doesn’t feel like we’re in this together anymore. It feels like you’re already halfway to LA, and I’m just… here, waiting for you to remember that we have a relationship.” Lucas’s eyes flashed with irritation. “That’s not fair, Emma. You know how important this promotion is to me. I’m doing this for us, for our future.” “Are you?” Emma shot back, her voice rising. “Because it feels like you’re doing it for you, and I’m just supposed to follow along, no questions asked.” Lucas threw up his hands in frustration. “What do you want me to do, Emma? Turn down the promotion? Stay in New York and throw away everything I’ve worked for? Is that what you want?” “I never said that!” Emma exclaimed, her heart pounding in her chest. “But I also don’t want to feel like I’m the last thing on your list of priorities.” Lucas stared at her, his expression a mix of anger and disbelief. “I’m doing the best I can, Emma. But I can’t be in two places at once. I can’t make everyone happy all the time.” Emma’s shoulders slumped, the fight draining out of her. “I’m not asking you to make everyone happy, Lucas. I’m just asking you to talk to me, to let me in. I feel like I’m losing you, and it’s killing me.” Lucas’s expression softened, and for a moment, it looked like he was about to say something, to reach out and close the distance between them. But then his phone buzzed, and just like that, the moment was gone. He glanced at the screen, his jaw tightening. “I have to take this,” he said, turning away before Emma could respond. As he walked into the other room, phone pressed to his ear, Emma stood there, feeling more alone than ever. She knew this wasn’t just about a phone call. It was about everything that had been left unsaid, the misunderstandings and missteps that had piled up between them. And as much as she wanted to believe they could fix it, she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were running out of time.
