Chapter Five
Time flew by, and it was time for me to go, but Grandpa Nonny wasn't done, and I was not to disturb him when he was like that. I went to the kitchen to tell the cook, who had arrived minutes ago, that I was going; she should help me deliver the message to Sir when he was done, then I left.
I had to go to the market to get some things needed for the house and prepare something for Hudson and Bella; they would be back later in the day. They said they had practice and stuff like that. Bella was really into basketball; I loved that for her. I think it's worth saying that in the family, I am the one deprived of height, and Hudson says he enjoys musical instruments; he plays the violin. All in all, I'm super proud of my siblings; they make things way easier for me. There are things I don't have to bother about, like taking their studies seriously. They are good kids, and I'm so glad. They make me feel like a proud mom or sister. Anyone is fine.
Lost in thought, I hadn't noticed my phone was ringing. I went to get it. Unknown number?
"Hello?"
"Hello, Ms. Evelyn Ashford?"
"Yes? Who's this, please?"
"Hi, Ms. Ashford, I'm Anna calling from DEN&KIT WORLD FIRM."
My heart tensed up because I had dropped an application there as well, but why are they calling me? I normally get rejections via email. Did I piss them off that they decided to give me a piece of their mind via call? All thoughts were running through my mind, and I forgot I was still on a call with someone.
"Hello? Hello?? Hello, Ms. Ashford, are you still there? Can you hear me?"
"Oh, sorry, I'm sorry. Yeah, I can hear you. Sorry."
"No problem, Ms. Ashford. I was saying that your job application has been accepted, and you are expected to report back for finalization of the contract and to begin work at your convenience, but immediately if it's okay with you."
I couldn't believe my ears. DEN&KIT were the last I ever expected to ever call me. They are the biggest firm here in Manhattan, and they were the ones I hadn't had in a long while expecting to be the first to offer me a job. WOW!!
"Ms. Ashford, did you hear what I said, please?"
"Oh yeah, I sure did!!" Shoot, no, I have to be professional...
"I mean, yes, very well, I heard you. Thank you very much for passing the message. I'm very delighted."
"You're welcome, Ma'am. We will be expecting you on Monday, and then we will begin from there."
Wow... This... Is this real?
"Yeah, I will be there, thank you."
"Alright, Ma, I will be ending the call now."
"Alright, goodbye."
Did that just happen?? Ahh, I felt over the moon. Till I was done preparing the food, I still felt I had to share with someone. I had no friend to immediately call. Bella and Hudson were not back yet. The only person I would have loved to call was Grandpa Nonny, but he still might be busy. I just hummed happily to myself as the hours passed.
....
"Eva!!" I heard my name deep within my sleep; I woke to see Hudson and Bella back.
"When did you guys come back?"
"Like six hours ago? You were deep in your sleep, and we didn't want to wake you, but we had to be sure you were okay. You're never a deep sleeper, so..." said Bella.
I checked the time, and it was past 7 pm, and I started sleeping, like around 1 pm. I was down bad. That's new. It's definitely the joy of the job. Did that happen, or was it a dream? I checked my phone, and yes, it's true; there in my email lies the confirmation. I couldn't help but smile.
"What happened, Eva? You're smiling," Bella asked.
"Have you guys eaten? I prepared food."
"Yes, we have eaten. Don't change the question."
"I was not trying to change the question; actually, I was waiting for you guys to come back to tell you, I..."
"OMG, you finally got a boyfriend."
"What? NO!"
"I knew it wouldn't be a relationship," says Hudson.
Yes... wait? What? Why did I feel that as a jab?
"Guys, guys, focus. I got news even better than your suggestions: I finally got the job."
They both froze, shocked. I'm pretty sure this was exactly how I looked a few hours ago.
"For real?"
"You're being serious?"
"You're not joking with us."
"It is not a prank?"
They both bombarded me at the same time.
"Yes, it's for real. Yes, I'm being serious. No, I'm not joking, and it most definitely isn't a prank."
"OMG!!! Eva!!! This is better news. I'm so happy right now, ahh." Bella embraced me in a tight hug, followed by Hudson.
"I'm so happy for you, Sis," said Hudson.
"Me too, guys. Me too. Thank you, guys, so much."
"Doesn't this call for celebration, Eva?"
"We will celebrate after signing the contract on Monday, "I said skeptically.
Bella looked at me. "You got the job, Eva; there's no need to be scared."
"Yeah, right, I know."
They know the reason I was scared was that since graduating and getting my B.Sc. degree with honors, I still haven't been able to get a good-paying job, or even one that doesn't pay well, for two years now. I had constantly been rejected, so yeah, I'm happy but also scared.
"You will be fine, Eva; you got this," Bella said, and Hudson nodded at me.
"Thanks, guys." They have always been my support; we have always been each other's support, and for that I am really grateful.
"Alright, this is supposed to be a happy moment, not brooding time. I will order some ice cream and snacks so we can do a mini-celebration and have movie night. Is that okay?"
"Perfect by me," says Hudson. "Me too," followed by Bella.
We started setting up the movie night in our small, cozy room that had become our home.
