Chapter Three
I'm calmer now, and it's time to go home. Screw that; that was never our home to begin with, but on second thought, I can't take Hudson and Bella back. Who knew what was waiting for us back there? I need to face it alone and not involve the kids.
"Mrs... sorry, Isabella, I know this might be out of nowhere, but can Hudson and Bella stay here tonight?" There are things I need to settle today, and it will be best if they are not present," I said so tensely.
She looked at me very closely, momentarily, before answering, "Sure, Eva, no problem. I just hope you're okay, dear."
I was so close to breaking down, but I don't have time for that now.
"Yes, Isabella, I promise you I'm fine." She looks at me again with that kind of look that holds questions, and I'm very sure she doesn't believe me, but I'm glad she allowed my siblings to stay. I just continued talking anyway. "Thank you very much. I will come get them tomorrow. Thank you so much, Ma'am."
"It's not that big of a deal, Eva."
Oh, if only you knew. I just tried my best to muster a smile.
"Eva, Eva, Eva, you have come. Sorry we..." Bella started.
"Yeah, yeah, sure, sure, I heard everything from Mrs. Ethone. Don't worry, I'm not mad, so... guys, how does it sound to sleep over right here with Jordan? You know, enjoy the weekend to the fullest."
They both looked at me like I had grown two horns all of a sudden.
"All of a sudden?" said Hudson.
"Yeah, Eva, you never agreed to the idea on your own before," added Bella.
"Well, there's always time for change. I've already spoken to Mrs. Ethone, and she agreed to have you guys over, so.... What do you say?"
"But..." Bella holds Hudson's hands. "Sure, Eva, we will wait for you till you come get us," she said, looking at me like she understood everything. I nodded at the two, greeted Isabella again, and then left.
...
On getting to the house, everything felt so ice-cold, like it had been abandoned for ages. I couldn't see anyone. I skeptically went up to the room I had been staying in for two years now, which I had gotten accustomed to. Yeah, damn, all this explanation for my room. I went up the stairs, but nobody was there; no signs of any broken bottle, no signs of Derrick, not even any sign of blood on the floor. It looked like the place was mercilessly cleaned—magnificently clean.
Wow, my aunt sure got some skills. I heard footsteps downstairs. I went there; there stood Aunt May. She saw me, left what she was doing, and stared at me for what looked like an eternity.
And the next words I heard from her were so unreal: "Did he hurt you?"
Wait, what? She had never shown any sympathy towards my siblings or me.
"No, I didn't give him a chance," she nodded her head.
The next thing she said took away whatever effect her previous question had.
"Good, you don't have a case then."
"Wait, what?"
"You see, between you and my husband, you are in a better state, and there are better ways a well-paid lawyer can tell the whole story to put all the blame on you and make my husband the victim."
"What?!!!"
"I mean, you're barely bruised, but that's not the case for Derrick; anyone can do or change anything for the right price." "You did not call the police, or else they would have been here hours ago. What if I called them and told them that you tried to murder my husband?"
I was too stunned to speak.
"Everybody would be happy if you just kept your mouth shut and behaved as if nothing happened."
"Behaved as if nothing happened?"
Yeah, I mean, you are not the first to be r***d; actually, attempted r**e—he didn't get to do it."
"So it's clear to you that he tried to r**e me, and this is what you say?"
"I mean, it wasn't hard to figure out what happened since I saw him lying helplessly on the floor of your room. Also, I have always seen the way he looks at you, and I got some pieces from him that helped me figure out what happened. Also, what do you expect me to say to you? Hold you while you cry to me. Tell you I'm sorry this happened to you? We both know I don't care at all."
"I have always loathed the way he looks at you; he never looks at me that way. I already despised you; him having eyes for you intensified the hate I have for YOU."
"I NEVER WANTED HIM LOOKING AT ME ANYWAY," I spat.
"You and your mother are just the same, taking everything away from me!!" "That aside, unless you want to not be with your siblings anymore, start looking for a lawyer, and possibly go to jail. I suggest you don't make a scene about this, because you have no evidence or even significant wounds to back up your claim of assault."
"So be a smart girl, take your and our siblings' stuff, and get the hell out of my house."
She was about to walk away from me when I started playing a record on my phone.
"You see, between you and my husband, you are in a better state, and there are better ways a well-paid lawyer can tell the whole story to put all the blame on you and make my husband the victim."
I played another one.
"Yes, I mean, you are not the first to be r***d; actually, attempted r**e—he didn't get to do it."
"I bet your words can serve as sufficient evidence after all," I said.
"YOU WRETCH!!!"
"Now listen to me, MAY, and listen well. I have myself and my siblings to take care of, so right now some things are not a priority to me, but will I get back at you? Bet I will. Now, to avoid trouble and safely get out of your house, that requires money."
"How dare you?"
"Now I'm not done talking, AUNT MAY!! It's either you do my bidding, or you get your fingers crossed while I play this game MYSELF, because I promise you there is more evidence than just your voice."
For a good two minutes, she looked at me like she wanted me out of this world immediately.
"What do you want?" she asked calmly.
Now, we are talking...
