The night was silent, but Madison sobs filled every inch of her small, dimly lit room. She curled into herself on the edge of the bed, hugging her knees tightly to her chest as though they could shield her from the overwhelming pain gnawing at her heart. The hospital bills sat cold and heavy on her lap, numbers dancing before her teary eyes. A heart transplant. That was what the doctors said her mother needed—urgently—or she wouldn’t survive the month.
She felt like the walls were closing in on her, suffocating her with hopelessness.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, vibrating insistently, breaking through her storm of emotions. She blinked through her tears, swiping at the screen to see her best friend's name, Tasha, calling.
For a moment, she thought of ignoring it. She didn’t have the energy to talk. But Tasha never called this late unless it was important. Taking a deep breath, she answered.
“Maddie? Are you okay? You didn’t reply to my texts.” Tasha’s voice came through the phone, laced with concern.
I tried to hold it together, but the dam broke again. “Tash...” my voice cracked, tears spilling freely now. “She’s in the hospital... Mom... She needs a heart transplant, Tasha.”
There was a pause. “What? Oh my God... Maddie, I’m so sorry, how come, what happened...”
“I don’t know what to do,” I sobbed harder, my voice trembling. “The bills... They’re... I can’t even... It’s impossible, Tash. The deposit alone is enough to bury us alive.”
“maddie, calm down. Breathe, okay? Where are you now? Home?”she asked
I nodded even though Tasha couldn’t see me. “Yeah.”
“I’ll come over. Or do you want to meet up?”
“No... I... I can’t... I don’t want cami to know yet.”
“Okay. Listen... I don’t have much, but I’ll send you what I have. It’s not much, but it might help a little, okay?”
she swallowed the lump in her throat, guilt pressing on her chest. “Tash, I can’t take your money. You have your own problems.”
“Shut up, dummy. I’m your best friend and as long as we're best friends you're never going through anything alone. So Of course, you can take it.” she added
she was so touched by what Tasha said that she was sobbing so hard even if she tried a watery chuckle. “Thanks... I’m just... lost.”
“You’re not alone, Maddie. I’m with you. stop crying please”
"thank you so much Tash" she said
"this means a lot to me" she added
they talked for a while longer until Maddie's tears dried, and the exhaustion finally pulled her into a restless sleep.

The next morning was no easier. she had forced herself out of bed, plastering a fake smile on her face as she prepared breakfast. cami , bounced into the kitchen, her usual cheerful self, but her smile faded when she noticed the empty chair at the table and her swollen eyes.
“maddie... where’s Mom? She didn’t come back last night?” cami's big, innocent eyes searched mine.
Panic flared into her chest, but I
she quickly masked it with a casual smile. “Oh... Mom had to travel to the city. She went to buy more goods for the shop. She’ll be back soon.” she lied
cami pouted. “She didn’t tell me...”
“She left early while you were sleeping. You know how Mom is... always rushing,” she lied smoothly, even though it ripped her apart inside.
but cami seemed to buy it, but the guilt gnawed at her all day.
After breakfast she quickly carried cami to school, she wasn't going to work that day because Mr Kennedy gave her some time off to solve her personal matters.

Maddie's POV
Later that afternoon, I met up with Tasha at the hotel where she worked as a receptionist since I didn't have anything to do at home. The familiar scent of coffee and cleaning agents hits my nose as I entered the hotel lobby, a world far from the suffocating reality of my home.
Tasha spotted me and waved, forcing a bright smile as if we could pretend, even for a few hours, that things were normal.
we found a quiet corner in the staff break room, chatting over cheap snacks and bottled water since it wasn't Tasha's shift
“So... tell me about that cute guy that checked in yesterday,” I teased, wanting to distract myself with the hot hotel gossip
Tasha laughed, rolling her eyes. “Girl, that man is married with three kids. I checked.” she said
" wait what, there was really a guy like that, I just made that up" I asked
" well you didn't because there was" she said casually
"no way" I asked
we giggled, talked about old times, gossiped about our old schoolmates, and for a brief moment, I forgot about my aching heart.
Night crept in, and the hotel got busier with guests. Tasha glanced at the clock, groaning. “Night shift is the worst, ugh. I swear I’ll die on this chair someday.”
But a few hours into her shift, Tasha clutched her stomach, her face contorting in pain.
“Are you okay?” I asked, worried.
“I... I think it’s that stupid cramps stuff again,” Tasha winced. “maddie... I hate to ask, but... can you please cover for me for a few hours? I need to go to the hospital. I’ll explain to the manager later.”
Without hesitation, I nodded. “Of course. Go. I’ll manage, when did it start.” I asked
"this morning" she said while clutching her stomach
"I think it's because of the chocolate I ate" she added
Tasha looked at me with grateful eyes, whispering, “You’re the best, Maddie... I’ll owe you one.”
" it's no big deal, now go and take care of yourself I'll do just fine"
As Tasha rushed out, I took her seat behind the desk. I sighed deeply, glancing around the luxurious lobby. I couldn’t help but wonder how many of the rich guests walking past the table had enough money to save my mother's life without blinking.
"If only life were that easy". I said to myself
"But it wasn’t, so I have to accept this bitter truth and work hard for mom's bills" I assured myself
And I just had to face it one painful day at a time.
