Evelyn hadn't expected Chris' retribution to come so swiftly.
One after another, the investors who had agreed to cooperate with her began to back out, subtly suggesting that she should seek Chris for a resolution.
It became clear to her: Chris was teaching her a lesson.
Just as she had allowed those investors to misinterpret their relationship, he could disentangle their association completely.
He could indeed be merciless when he wanted to.
After attending several gatherings and drinking more than usual, Evelyn felt her body giving way.
She rushed out of the private room, barely making it to the fire exit before vomiting next to a trash can, tears streaming down her face.
After wiping her eyes, she kicked the trash can furiously. "Chris is such a despicable jerk!"
Chris was leaning against the railing and smoking. He had only stepped out for a quick break but ended up witnessing this unexpected one-woman show.
The last image he fixed on was her wiping the tears from her eyes.
Evelyn pulled out a compact mirror from her purse and meticulously touched up her makeup.
She then practiced a perfect business smile in the mirror.
But then, in the reflection...
She cleaned the mirror and adjusted it slightly to the right, bringing Chris' face fully into view.
Startled, Evelyn turned around, but Chris had already walked away.
Her body reacted before her brain could process, and she chased after him, grabbing his sleeve with a pleasing smile.
"Mr. Kensington, do you have a moment?"
"No time," Chris retorted, pulling his sleeve back and pushing open the door of the private room.
Not wanting to miss this opportunity, Evelyn hastily followed, but something threw off her balance as he opened the door.
Reacting instinctively, Chris sidestepped, only to have Evelyn crash into him, sending him against the door with a loud thud.
The door handle hit Chris squarely in the lower back.
Chris cursed under his breath.
'Damn... is she going to ruin my kidney? That hurts so much!'
Meanwhile, Evelyn wondered, 'It seems he's in pain. But where did he hit?'
Then, Evelyn glanced guiltily at his crotch.
"Where are you looking? I hit my back," Chris hissed, grinding his teeth.
"I'm so sorry, it wasn't intentional. The carpet caught my heel..." Evelyn stammered, stepping back.
The high-end hotel's private rooms always had heavy doors for soundproofing.
As the other door hit the wall, it bounced back while Evelyn kept retreating.
Chris instantly tensed up, and he pulled her into his chest before she could react.
The door swung closed, narrowly missing Evelyn's head.
When she realized what had happened, she was already in his arms, a faint smell of tobacco lingering around.
She looked back, visibly shaken.
"Thank you. Does it hurt a lot where you hit?"
Evelyn reached out to touch his waist but was promptly blocked.
Chris was clearly setting boundaries.
Not one to be crossed, Chris was teaching her a lesson about messing with someone of his power.
Evelyn withdrew her hand. "Mr. Kensington, there seems to be some misunderstanding between us..."
"Chris," someone called him, interrupting her.
Both turned to see that everyone inside the private room, about 20 of them, was staring at them intently.
The one who interrupted her was a beautiful, mature lady in designer attire, bearing a striking resemblance to Chris, especially those eyes.
Apart from her, the men sitting around the table all seemed quite alike.
It seemed this was Chris' family gathering.
Realizing why Chris had stepped out for a cigarette, Evelyn finally understood the situation.
"Ms. Dexys, I have no interest in any of Dexys Group's assets," Chris declared before closing the doors.
As the doors shut in front of her, Chris sat down, and his mother, Caroline Kensington, immediately concerned, "Did you get hurt?"
"It's nothing. Just don't crush my other kidney," Chris joked, trying to reassure his mother.
Caroline eyed him skeptically. "Was that Ms. Dexys from the Dexys family? Are you close?"
"I barely know her."
Caroline noticed a fresh scratch on his hand caused by the doorlock.
Was he so benevolent towards someone he barely knew?
"Ms. Dexys has complicated ties with the Melon family. Your grandmother is keen on arranging a marriage with Ms. Melon, so you'd better keep your distance," Caroline advised.
His grandmother, Violet Kensington, also looked his way, adding, "There's a charity auction next week with some valuable items. Take Ms. Melon with you."
Chris frowned, reluctant to comply, but Violet persisted, "An old friend told me there are some fine antiques. Bring some back for me."
Knowing he couldn't refuse, Chris massaged his temple. "Understood."
Just then, a waiter came in and handed Chris a bag. "Mr. Kensington, a lady said you needed this."
Puzzled, Chris opened the bag and immediately frowned in rage.
"What is it?" Caroline leaned in.
Chris quickly tried to close the bag, but it was too late.
Kidney supplements?
Condoms?
And there was also a box of pain relief patches.
Caroline's face darkened. "Restrain yourself, understand? Or you might regret it sooner or later."
Chris was speechless.
'Heaven's sake, do I look like I can get laid every single day?'
Fuming, he realized it might be necessary to show Evelyn how capable he was.
